Relief – sporting that is…

Dear parents/carers

We quite rightly spend the vast majority of our time in schools making sure that your children get the best education possible and attain to the highest possible standard.

However, school is far more than a set of examination results, it’s about community!

That’s why it’s been so enjoyable this week both taking part in and watch students and staff working alongside each other with the purpose of raising as much money for Sport Relief as possible.

I personally took the opportunity earlier in the week to ditch the suit in favour of sports kit to take part in teachers versus student’s badminton. Despite losing a couple of games (I blame my partner!) it was really enjoyable to have some competitive fun and raise money for such a worthy cause at the same time.

Other events that have taken place this week have been staff versus student’s netball and volleyball, as well as a very successful (so I have been told) bake sale by the P.E. department as part of the Great John Hanson Bake Off. All the proceeds to go to Sport Relief.

This all culminated today in all students and many staff running the sport relief mile.

All in all a great week of community activity.

Can I thank all those staff who have been involved in the organisation of the various events.

I look forwards to finding out how much we have raised.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Regards

National Citizens Service Summer challenge
We are delighted that currently over thirty of our year 11s will be embarking on the National Citizens Service Summer challenge; last night, parents and students attended the information event to find out more about the thrilling experience on offer for just £50 (£35 early-bird offer).

During the three weeks of summer, the school leavers will be exposed to totally new experiences from coasteering and surfing in beautiful Croyde or Truro, to community charity work in Andover.

There are still places available so please contact Mrs Ferguson (Head of Year 11) or visit the NCS website for more information.

Rural Primary Year 5/6 Football Competition

John Hanson School hosted the Rural Primary Year 5/6 Football Competition yesterday on the Astro.  12 teams from Longparish, Abbotts Ann, Clatford, Smannell & Enham, St Marybourne, Grateley, Hatherden, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Kimpton, Shipton Bellinger and Amport Schools competed against each other to win the trophy.

Hatherden A team and St Marybourne met in the final, but St Marybourne we’re finally crowned champions after their 3-1 victory.

The GCSE students refereed all of the games, and the Y7-9 Young Leaders were Team Managers.

Year 10 County Plate Final

The year 10 rugby team looked to emulate the previous year 10 team to make it 2 county plate successes in 2 years. They went into the final against Salesian of the back an impressive run of results in the competition.

The game was played at Gosport & Fareham RFC and the conditions were always going to prove tricky with a strong wind sweeping across the pitch and a number of rain showers. John Hanson started the stronger winning a number of penalties and spending the first 10 minutes camped in the Salesian half, however they couldn’t get over the whitewash and Salesian managed to clear their lines. Both defences were on top and John Hanson were showing some excellent defensive work with bit hits coming in from Dan Marquiss, Connor Burdock and Connor Hayward. Towards the end of the first half the Salesian outside centre showed excellent strength to break the line and looked certain to score, however a fantastic tackle by fullback Seb McWhirter, assisted by Jack Harvey forced him to knock on over the try line. From the resulting 5m scrum fly half Freddie Horner showed excellent composure to clear his lines and soon after the teams went into half time with the score still 0-0.

John Hanson started the 2nd half in a similar fashion to the first. After a string of penalties for Salesian being offside at both the ruck and lineout, John Hanson found themselves once again camped in the opposition 22. Strong carries from Lloyd Wakeham and Connor Hayward got them within metres of the line but with conditions worsening handling errors cost them a chance of scoring. Then came arguably the biggest moment of the match. After Salesian had conceded yet another penalty for being offside just 5m from their line, fly half Freddie Horner took the penalty quickly and dived over to score. However as the ball didn’t leave his hands when he tapped it the referee ruled out the try and pulled them back. On the second attempt at the penalty another handling error afforded Salesian a chance to clear.

The opposition then gained control of the game and it was now John Hanson’s turn to hang on. The defensive work of the outside backs, Josh Meads-Jones, Morgan Whiteley and Kai Henderson proving decisive as they made a number of excellent tackles with the opposition threatening to score. As the game drew close to a conclusion and with the match still at 0-0 both teams began to panic in possession as they chased an elusive score. Unfortunately the game ended 0-0 with both sets of players left deflated. The unlikely score line (the first that I have seen in all my years in rugby) meant that the teams shared the plate.
Year 10 Hampshire 7s

Due to the poor weather in recent weeks the year 10 Hampshire 7s saw only 5 schools competing at the rearranged tournament. However the boys would face tough competition against 4 of the other top rugby schools in the county; PGS, Lord Wandsworth, Kings and Salesian.

They started the round robin section with a convincing 17-5 win over Salesian with tries from Jamie Ross, Morgan Whiteley and Jack Harvey. Their second match saw them face tougher opposition in Lord Wandsworth. Their opponents starting quickly and raced to a 17-0 lead before a Morgan Whiteley try made it 17-5 at half time. John Hanson then enjoyed a large amount of possession and looked threating in attack before a Wandsworth breakaway try sealed the match 22-5.

In their 3rd game they took on Kings, a side they had never beaten in any format of rugby. Early defensive pressure led to a turnover and Jamie Ross snuck over to give John Hanson the lead. Then a Kings Breakaway try gave them a 7-5 lead before Lloyd Wakeham scored on the stroke of halftime with Connor Hayward converting to give John Hanson a 12-7 half time lead. In the second half John Hanson enjoyed plenty of territory and possession but were unable to get the decisive third score. The last play of the game saw Kings with possession in their own 22 but strong defensive pressure forced a knock on meaning the final score was 12-7 to John Hanson. Their final game of the round robin saw John Hanson face PGS who had won all 3 previous games comfortably. The first half saw JH dominate possession but they were unable to score meaning it was 0-0 at half time. PGS then scored 2 quick tries at the start of the second half before a Lloyd Wakeham consolation try meant the final score was 12-5 to PGS who were the eventual cup winners.

John Hanson finished 3rd in the round robin with 2 wins and 2 defeats meaning they would once again face Salesian in a County Plate final. Following the sides 0-0 draw in the 15 a-side County Plate final last week a repeat result was unlikely. Salesian started the better and raced to a 10-0 lead but then John Hanson started to take control. Josh Meads-Jones sniped over from a lineout 5 metres out to score and Connor Hayward kicked the conversion to make the half time score 10-7.

Just after half time a fantastic Jack Harvey solo effort made the score 12-10 before a breakaway try gave Salesian a 17-12 lead with just 2 minutes to play. John Hanson then went on the attack and after a number of penalties they were camped inside the opposition 22. They found themselves just a metre short and eventually Josh Meads-Jones crashed over with a pick and go to level the scores at 17-17. This left Connor Hayward with a difficult kick to win the match and he kept his cool to slot it from near the touchline giving John Hanson a 19-17 victory.

The boys retained last year’s title won by the previous year 10 in yet another excellent display of rugby by a John Hanson rugby team.
