School-Based Comprehensive Oral Health Services
Maternal and Child Health Journal has published an article co-authored by the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA's) Pamella Vodicka and previous HRSA Division Director Elizabeth Edgerton that assesses results from HRSA’s School-Based Comprehensive Oral Health Services (SBCOHS) program. Findings show that the enrolled children had great need for services, with nearly half presenting with tooth decay. Over the four-year program period, grantees used community-based strategies to increase enrollment from 5,000 to more than 9,700, and grow the percentage of students receiving preventive services from 58 to 88 percent. An executive summary and a briefing on the findings are also available.

Another MCHB-funded outcome from SBCOHS is the resource, Integrating Sustainable Oral Health Services into Primary Care in School-Based Health Centers: A Framework. OHRC supported grantee efforts and produced this framework as a toolkit containing lessons that grantees learned during the funding period. The framework offers ideas for school-based health centers (SBHCs) to consider when integrating sustainable comprehensive oral health services into primary care to improve the quality of oral health services for school-age children and adolescents.
