GDPR is more important than ever: The Cambridge Analytica-Facebook meltdown

by Ashwin Krishnan for www.csoonline.com

This CSO article briefly examines the Cambridge Analytica fiasco with Facebook in terms of the breach mechanics, the platform vendors' conumdrum, the challenge to consumers and the coming effect of the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

GDPR, which takes effect May 2018 worldwide, affects any individual, business or organization that stores or processes the personal information of EU individuals. (The linked articles and sponsored content below delve deeper into the actual rules of GDPR compliance, penalties for non-compliance, and best practices as they have evolved today.)

Krishnan, the CSO article's author, concludes, "We are in a journey where the privacy boundaries are going to be constantly tested. Expecting the platform vendors to suddenly start doing the 'morally' right thing is too naïve. Consumers need to be savvier and assume extreme ownership of their own data. GDPR provides the framework, it is our duty to exercise it."

Author Ashwin Krishnan is a cyber moralist, cybersecurity evangelist, board advisor, podcaster, author and blogger with over two decades of hi-tech executive experience in the cybersecurity and virtualization domain.

Surprising Insights About Strategic IT Leadership

by Marc J.Schiller for CIO Insight

Late last year, the CIO Insight staff asked its community of readers a series of three questions to gain a better understanding of how strategic vision and execution are progressing in reality.

They asked:

  • “Why do you want to become a more strategic IT leader?”
  • “What is your biggest barrier to becoming more strategic?”
  • “How is strategy currently handled in your IT organization?”

As the study's author, Author Marc J. Schiller notes, "Throughout our survey, when we asked these IT leaders what was holding them back from becoming more strategic, at heart they kept saying just one thing: 'I want to add strategic value to my business, but I don’t know how.'”

Yet, he also observes, "In fact, right now, IT leaders are the only people who can create a truly compelling, cross-functional vision and strategy for their business’ technology-driven future."

This two-page article summarizes what they learned were common obstacles. Do they sound familiar?

Author Marc J. Schiller, the founder and managing partner of Rain Partners, is a leading voice on IT leadership and management. His book, The 11 Secrets of Highly Influential IT Leadersdiscusses significant management challenges facing IT leaders today—and how to address them.
