Naturfreunde wandern in der Landschaft des Jahres 2018/2019 – Senegal/Gambia
Anlässlich der Pilotreise „Tour d’Horizon“, die im Januar 2018 äußerst erfolgreich durchgeführt wurde, wurden auch Möglichkeiten erkundet, Wanderungen in der Landschaft des Jahres zu unternehmen. Gut geeignet dafür ist der Kunkilling Forest Park in Gambia, am Südufer des Gambiaflusses gelegen, ca. 5 Kilometer stromaufwärts von der Distrikthauptstadt Janjanbureh. „Forest Parks“ sind am ehesten mit dem deutschen Staatsforst zu vergleichen. Sie stehen unter staatlicher Verwaltung, und Forstwirtschaft darf nur kontrolliert mit Genehmigung betrieben werden.
In diesem Schutzgebiet können BesucherInnen die reichhaltige Fauna und Flora der Region kennen lernen. Besonders interessant ist die Vogelwelt. Der Park wird durch so genannte „eco-trails“ erschlossen, die von vier verschiedenen Dörfern aus die Begehung eines Teiles des 200 Hektar großen Schutzgebiets ermöglichen. Die Trails sind jeweils 0,5 oder 1 km lang, die sportliche Herausforderung ist also gering. Aber die wird in dem Park nicht gesucht – das Interesse gilt der Naturbeobachtung. Die vier Dörfer gewährleisten gemeinsam mit der Forstbehörde das Management. Bei der Tour d’Horizon wurde nur ein kurzer Abschnitt eines der Wege begangen – für weitere Reisen in die Landschaft des Jahres sind längere Wanderungen geplant.
Die Naturfreunde Koungheul (Senegal) planen ebenfalls, in ihrem Teil der Landschaft des Jahres Wandermöglichkeiten zu schaffen. Dazu gehört ein Naturweg („Natura Trail“), der von dem Dorf Maka Gouye ausgeht. Hier gibt es kein ausgewiesenes Naturschutzgebiet, sondern man wandert durch die Natur und durch die Dörfer – man kommt vorbei an Feldern, Bäumen, Plantagen, Obstgärten etc. und teilweise geht es auch an einem Nebenarm des Gambiaflusses entlang, der durchaus über landschaftliche Reize verfügt. Interessant sind auch die vielen Sträucher und Bäume am Wegesrand, die in der Naturmedizin Bedeutung haben.

Die Lippe ist die Flusslandschaft des Jahres 2018/19
Die NaturFreunde Deutschlands und der Deutsche Angelfischerverband rufen alle zwei Jahre eine neue Flusslandschaft aus, um die Bevölkerung für die ökologische, ökonomische und soziokulturelle Bedeutung der Flüsse zu sensibilisieren. Die Lippe entspringt am Fuße des Teutoburger Wald als Karstquelle, durchfließt das nördliche Ruhrgebiet und mündet nach 220 Kilometern bei Wesel in den Rhein. Bereits die Römer nutzten die Lippe als wichtigen Transportweg. Heute werden die Lippe und ihre angrenzende Landschaft als Naherholungsgebiet geschätzt und genutzt. Als "Flusslandschaft des Jahres" werden jeweils Flusslandschaften ausgezeichnet, die entweder besonders gefährdet sind oder an denen hervorragende Renaturierungsmaßnahmen stattfinden. EEB & Umweltverbände gegen deutsche Kohlelobby vor Gericht
Im April 2017 wurden die verschärften EU-Richtlinien, die strengere Grenzwerte für gesundheitsgefährdende Luftschadstoffe vorsehen, offiziell durch die Kommission beschlossen. Lobbyisten der Kohleindustrie und die deutschen Eigentümer von einigen der schmutzigsten Kohlekraftwerke und Tagebaue Europas reichten nun Klage gegen diese Entscheidung der Europäischen Kommission ein. Das Europäische Umweltbüro (European Environmental Bureau – EEB) und mehrere Umweltverbände haben sich entschlossen, vor Gericht zu intervenieren und die EU-Regeln zu verteidigen. Die Umweltverschmutzungen durch die europäischen Kohlkraftwerke führen jährlich zu etwa 20.000 vorzeitigen Todesfällen, 458.000 Asthma-Anfällen bei Kindern und Kosten von mehr als 50 Milliarden Euro für das Gesundheitssystem. --->

Zwischenbericht zum "Aktionsplan für Mensch, Natur und Wirtschaft"
Die EU-ExpertInnengruppe für Biodiversität und Naturschutz (Co-ordination Group for Biodiversity and Nature) hat Anfang März einen Bericht über die bisher erzielten Fortschritte im "Aktionsplan für Mensch, Natur und Wirtschaft" veröffentlicht. Mit diesem Aktionsplan hat sich die EU vorgenommen, bis 2020 den Verlust der Biodiversität zu halbieren. Die darin enthaltenen 15 Maßnahmen sollen die Umsetzung der EU-Naturschutzrichtlinien zum Vogelschutz sowie Fauna-, Flora- und Habitatschutz im Zeitraum von 2017 bis 2019 unterstützen und verbessern. Vizepräsident der Naturfreunde Internationale
Der Italiener Leonardo Baroncelli wurde beim Kongress der NFI am 21. Oktober 2017 zum Vize-Präsidenten der NFI gewählt. Bei den Naturfreunden Italien beschäftigt er sich mit internationalen Themen sowie dem Umweltschutz. In unserem Gespräch spricht Leonardo über seine Beweggründe, sich für die Naturfreunde-Bewegung einzusetzen und über seine Ideen für die Zukunft der Organisation.
Was war deine persönliche Motivation, dich als Vize-Präsident der internationalen Naturfreunde-Bewegung zu engagieren?
Schon in meiner Jugend war ich beim “International Civil Service”, einer UN-Hilfsorganisation, die Freiwillige weltweit entsendet. In dieser Eigenschaft nahm ich an Hilfsaktionen teil, wie etwa bei der Überschwemmung in Florenz 1966 und dem Erdbeben in Westsizilien 1966 – Seite an Seite mit Tausenden von Freiwilligen, die aus vielen Ländern kamen, um zu helfen. Hier habe ich große internationale Solidarität erfahren und das hat mein berufliches und privates Leben geprägt. Nach dem Rückzug aus der italienischen Diplomatie und 40 Jahren Dienst auf vier Kontinenten wollte ich mich wieder gemeinnützigen Tätigkeiten widmen, insbesondere dem Schutz der Natur und autochtoner Kulturen, die aktuell auf nicht nachhaltige und unfaire Weise ausgebeutet werden.
Die Naturfreunde Italien sind international sehr aktiv, z.B. unterstützen sie die Gründung einer Naturfreunde-Gruppe in Bosnien. Wie wichtig ist Internationalität für dich – insbesondere in Zusammenhang mit der Naturfreunde-Bewegung?
Heute ist sie wichtiger denn je, insbesondere weil wir konfrontiert sind mit dem Aufkeimen des Populismus, der Bedrohung durch den Terrorismus und der Krise des Multilateralismus. Selbst die Grundfesten der europäischen Integration wurden in den letzten Jahren infrage gestellt. In diesem unsicheren Umfeld müssen wir unsere Kräfte darauf konzentrieren, die Werte der Naturfreunde-Bewegung in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen - insbesondere die Internationalität, die Demokratie, die Klimagerechtigkeit und die weltweite Allianz für das Überlebens unseres Planeten und der Menschheit.

Naturefriends go hiking in the Landscape of the Year 2018/2019 – Senegal/The Gambia
On the occasion of the "Tour d'Horizon", which was carried out very successfully in January 2018, opportunities were also explored to hike in the Landscape of the Year. Well suited for this is the Kunkilling Forest Park in The Gambia, located on the south bank of the Gambia River, about 5 km upstream from the district capita l Janjanbureh. Forest Parks are managed forests, they are under state administration, and forestry is only possible with special permission and is regularly controlled.
In this protected area visitors can get acquainted with the rich fauna and flora of the region; the birdlife being especially interesting. The Park is accessible from four different villages, on so-called "eco-trails", permitting to explore part of the 200 hectares of protected area. The trails are each 0.5 or 1 km long, so the physical challenge is low. But in any way performance is not sought in the Park – the interest is focussed on the observation of nature. In cooperation with the Forestry Department of the region, the four villages ensure the management of the Park. During the Tour d'Horizon, only a short section of one of the trails was experienced – longer hikes are planned for further trips into the Landscape of the Year.
The Naturefriends of Koungheul (Senegal) also plan to create hiking trails in their part of the Landscape of the Year. This includes a so-called Natura Trail which starts at the village Maka Gouye. However, what is explored here is not a protected nature area, but nature in and around villages – fields, trees, orchards, plantations, etc. The path leads along a tributary of the Gambia River, so it also has special scenic attractions. And the many shrubs and trees along the way, which are important for natural medicine, are also of great interest.

The river Lippe is the River Landscape of the Year 2018/19
The advisory board for aquatic ecology of the „Deutsche Angelfischerverband” and Naturefr iends Germany name a new river landscape of a year every two years in order to raise awareness within the population for the ecological, economical and socio-cultural importance of the rivers. The river Lippe arises in the Teutoburg Forest as a karstic spring, runs through the northern Ruhr area and after 220 kilometers flows into the river Rhine at the city Wesel. The Romans already used the river Lippe as an important transportation route. Today, the river Lippe and its surrounding landscape is valued and used as a local recreation area. The “River Landscape of the Year” focuses on river landscapes which are either especially endangered or where excellent renaturation measures are taking place. More information (German)

EEB & environmental groups take legal action against the German coal industry lobby
In April 2017, updated emission guidelines for stricter limits regarding air pollutants posing a health hazard have been formally adopted by the Commission. Lobbyists of the coal industry and the German owners of some of the dirtiest coal-fired power plants and surface mines in Europe are now suing against the decision of the European Commission. The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and numerous environmental groups have decided to take legal action and defend the EU rules. The environmental pollution from European coal plants causes about 20.000 premature deaths, 458.000 asthma attacks in children and creates more than €50 billion of health costs. --->

Interim report on the “Action Plan for nature, people and the economy”
In the beginning of March, the European co-ordination Group for Biodiversity and Nature published a report about the achieved progress in the “Action Plan for nature, people and the economy”. With this action plan, the EU aims to cut loss of biodiversity in half by 2020. The 15 measures that are included, support and improve the implementation or EU Nature Directives regarding bird protection as well as animal, plant and habitat protection from 2017 till 2019.

Naturefriends talk
LEONARDO BARONCELLI,
Vice-President of Naturefriends International
Leonardo Baroncelli from Italy has been elected Vice President of NFI at the NFI Congress on October 21, 2017. He is an active member of Naturefriends Italy dealing with international and environmental topics. In our conversation, Leonardo talks about the reasons for his involvement with Naturefriends and his ideas for the future of the organisation.
What was your personal motivation for running for Vice President of the international Naturefriends movement?
During my youth I became an activist of the International Civil Service, A relief organization which sends volunteers worldwide. In this capacity I took part to relief operations during the Florence flooding of 1966 and the West Sicily earthquake of 1968, side by side with thousands of volunteers who came from many countries to help. This experience of great international solidarity has inspired my professional and personal life. After retirement from Italian diplomacy and forty years of service in four continents, I felt the need to devote myself again to non-profit activities, especially for the protection of nature and autochthonous cultures, which are presently exploited in a unsustainable and unfair manner.
Naturefriends Italy are very active on the international level, e.g. supporting the development of a Naturefriends group in Bosnia. How important is internationality for you - especially regarding the Naturefriends movement?
It is more than ever of fundamental importance as we face the rise of populism, the threat of terrorism and the crisis of multilateralism. Even the very foundations of the European integration have been called into question in recent years. In this uncertain contest efforts must not be spared to promote the values of the Naturefriends movement, particularly regarding internationalism, democracy, climate justice and the worldwide alliance in favour of the survival of our planet and of mankind.

Les Amis de la Nature en randonnée dans le Paysage de l´Année 2018/2019 – Sénégal/Gambie
A l'occasion du voyage pilote « Tour d'Horizon », qui s'est déroulé avec beaucoup de succès en janvier 2018, des opportunités ont également été explorées de randonner dans le Paysage de l'Année. C’est le cas du Kunkilling Forest Park en Gambie, situé sur la rive sud du fleuve Gambie à environ 5 km en amont de la capitale régionale Janjanbureh. Les « parcs forestiers » peuvent se comparer aux forêts domaniales françaises. Ils sont sous administration publique, et toute exploitation forestière a besoin d’être autorisée et contrôlée. Dans cette zone protégée, les visiteurs peuvent découvrir la riche faune et la flore de la région, l’avifaune étant particulièrement intéressante. Le parc est accessible par des « sentiers écologiques », qui permettent d’accéder depuis quatre villages différents à une partie de cette zone protégée de 200 ha. Les sentiers font chacun 0,5 ou 1 km de long et ne présentent donc pas de challenge sportif. Mais ce n’est pas la performance sportive qui est recherchée dans le parc – l’intérêt porte sur l'observation de la nature. Les quatre villages assurent la gestion du parc en collaboration avec les autorités forestières. Pendant le « Tour d'Horizon », seule une courte section de l'un des sentiers a été explorée – des randonnées plus longues sont planifiées pour d'autres voyages prévus dans le Paysage de l’Année.
Les Amis de la Nature de Koungheul (Sénégal) prévoient eux aussi de créer des sentiers de randonnée dans leur partie du Paysage de l'Année. Cela comprend un sentier de découverte de la nature (« Sentier Natura »), au départ du village Maka Gouye. Cependant, ici il ne s’agit pas d’une zone naturelle protégée, mais de la nature dans et autour des villages – champs, arbres, vergers, plantations etc. Le chemin mène en partie le long d'un affluent du fleuve Gambie, ce tronçon présentant donc un décor paysager très attrayant. Les nombreux arbustes et arbres qui sont importants pour la médecine naturelle sont également intéressants.

La Lippe est le Paysage fluvial de l’Année en 2018/19
Les Amis de la Nature d’Allemagne et l’Association allemande de pêche à la ligne proclament tous les deux ans un nouveau Paysage fluvial de l’Année, dans le but de sensibiliser les populations pour le rôle écologique, économique et socio-culturel des rivières. La Lippe prend naît au pied de la Forêt de Teutoburg sous forme de source karstique, traverse ensuite le Nord de la région de la Ruhr et, après 220 kilomètres, se jette dans le Rhin, vers Wesel. Les Romains ont déjà profité de la Lippe comme importante voie de transport. De nos jours la Lippe et ses paysages riverains sont prisés et mis en valeur comme espaces de loisirs de proximité. Sont déclarés « Paysages fluviaux de l’Année » des paysages fluviaux qui sont soit exposés à des dangers particuliers, soit font l’objet d’excellentes actions de réhabilitation. Le BEE et les organisations environnementales saisissent les tribunaux conte le lobby allemand du charbon
En avril 2017, des règlements plus rigoureux, stipulant des seuils plus stricts en matière d’émissions atmosphériques nuisibles pour la santé, ont été officiellement adoptés par la Commission eurpéenne. Des lobbyistes de l’industrie du charbon et les propriétaires de quelques-unes des plus sales centrales au charbon et des mines à ciel ouvert d’Europe viennent donc de porter plainte contre cette décision de la Commission européenne. Or, le Bureau européen de l’Environnement (BEE) et plusieurs organisations environnementales ont décidé d’intervenir auprès des tribunaux afin de défendre les règlements de l’UE. Les pollutions causées par les centrales européennes au charbon causent chaque année environ 20 000 morts prématurées, 458 000 crises d‘asthme d’enfants et coûtent au secteur de la santé plus de 50 milliards d’Euros. --->

Rapport intermédiaire sur le « Plan d’action de l’Union européenne pour le milieu naturel, la population et l’économie »
Le Groupe de coordination de l’UE sur la biodiversité et la nature a publié début mars un rapport sur les progrès déjà réalisés par rapport au « Plan d’action pour le milieu naturel, la population et l’économie ». En adoptant ce Plan d’action, l’Union européenne s’est proposé de réduire de moitié les pertes de biodiversité d’ici 2020. Les 15 mesures que comprend le plan visent à soutenir et améliorer entre 2017 et 2019 la mise en œuvre des Directives « Oiseaux » et « Faune, Flore et Habitats ».

Des Amis et Amies da la Nature en conversation
LEONARDO BARONCELLI, Vice-Président de l´Internationale des Amis de la Nature
L’Italien Leonardo Baroncelli a été élu Vice-Président de l’IAN par le Congrès de l’IAN, le 21 octobre 2017. Il est un membre actif des Amis de la Nature d’Italie, où il s’occupe de thèmes internationaux et environnementaux. Dans notre entretien, Leonardo parle des raisons de son engagement pour les Amis de la Nature et de ses idées concernant l’avenir de l’organisation.
Quelle a été ta motivation personnelle pour être candidat à la Vice-Présidence du mouvement international des Amis de la Nature ?
Dans ma jeunesse j’ai milité au sein du Service civil international, un organisme de secours qui envoie des volontaires dans le monde entier. À ce titre j’ai participé à des opérations de secours pendant les inondations à Florence en 1966 et à l’occasion du tremblement de terre en 1968 dans l’ouest de la Sicile, à côté de milliers de volontaires venus de beaucoup de pays pour apporter leur aide. Cette expérience de grande solidarité internationale m’a inspiré dans ma vie professionnelle et personnelle. Après mon retrait de la diplomatie italienne et une carrière de quarante ans dans quatre continents, j’ai ressenti un besoin de m’engager de nouveau dans des activités sans but lucratif, notamment dans les domaines de la protection de la nature et des cultures autochtones, qui sont actuellement exploitées d’une manière non durable et non équitable.
Les Amis de la Nature d’Italie sont très actifs au plan international, ils soutiennent par exemple le développement d’un groupement d’Amis de la Nature en Bosnie. Quel rôle joue pour toi l’internationalisme – notamment dans le contexte du mouvement des Amis de la Nature ?
Plus que jamais il joue un rôle fondamental, comme nous sommes confrontés à la montée du populisme, aux menaces du terrorisme et à une crise du multilatéralisme. Les fondements mêmes de l’intégration européenne sont remis en question ces dernières années. Dans ce contexte d’insécurité, il ne faut ménager aucun effort pour promouvoir les valeurs du mouvement des Amis de la Nature, en particulier l’internationalisme, la démocratie, la justice climatique et une alliance dans le monde entier en faveur de la survie de notre planète et de l’humanité.
