From Our President
The Waverley Music Eisteddfod Committee is very proud to bring you our 40th year of music competitions in the City of Monash. In this 40th Anniversary Year, we emerge with a new name, the Monash Youth Music Festival, and with it, exciting new sections to help you enjoy a wider variety of performance experiences.

We are also delighted to have generous sponsors such as the City of Monash, Pinewood Community Bank® Branch and their Pitch Partners, The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Dulux Protective Coatings, and many other sponsors and supporters to enable us to continue our valuable work.

I encourage you to take part in this year’s events, both traditional and new, and we hope every young musician will find something they will enjoy.

– Gordon Pyke President
The Monash Youth Music Festival is coming!
The Monash Youth Music Festival offers young musicians plenty of opportunities to perform in piano, orchestral strings, woodwind and brass, recorder, vocal, instrumental ensembles, chamber music, recorder groups, primary school choirs  and chamber choirs.

With the introduction of fun, new non-competitive mini recitals and "Two of Us" duet sections (any two instruments including voice), we hope to have something for everyone!

The Festival starts early again this year, on Saturday August 4, and concludes with the Choral sections to be held on August 20 at the glorious Robert Blackwood Hall.

All solo and ensemble events will again be held in the Orchestral Room of Huntingtower School while the Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre construction is completed.

NOTE TO TEACHERS
The Monash Youth Music Festival gives your students incentive to practice and opportunities to perform!

Your solo music students benefit from performing in front of an audience and will develop skills that simply cannot be achieved by practice alone. Every participant receives an Adjudicator’s report, which contains encouraging comments and helpful hints to further improve your student’s performance, which in turn will help your student to succeed.

Our Music Festival will also encourage your music students to share their beautiful music with family and friends, and not just with an examiner. What a lovely reason for your music students to practice!
Encourage your students to sign up for this free newsletter!
NOTE TO MUSICIANS
Do you play in an ensemble, or take music lessons, but have never performed solo? Why not enter this year's Monash Youth Music Festival's many solo sections? Our new AMEB graded sections, or the new, non-competitive Mini Recital sections might be the perfect introduction into Music Festivals and Eisteddfods. We provide a free accompanist for solo sections, so why not have a try?

Learning to manage "butterflies in the stomach" is very helpful for anyone preparing for music exams too - the more you perform in front of other people, the less nervous you are likely to feel in front of an examiner!
NOTE TO FIRST TIME ENTRANTS

NEW MINI RECITALS - DUETS AND SOLOS

For music students new to eisteddfods and competitions, this year's Music Festival will offer five non-competitive "Mini Recital" sections that give performers the opportunity to perform under similar conditions to our competitive sections, in a more relaxed atmosphere. Each section concludes with a mini master class.

Duet sections offered this year:
Duet 14 years & under
Duet 18 years & under

There are also three graded open age solo sections, perfect for novice musicians:
Solo AMEB Grades 1 – 3
Solo AMEB Grades 4 – 5
Solo AMEB Grades 6+
You don't have to be doing the AMEB syllabus, but your piece should be of an equivalent standard. Please check with your music teacher if you are not sure.

Do you have a favourite piece of music you are working on? Why not enter the Festival and perform it? There is plenty of time to practice and polish between now and August, so put your entry in as soon as entries open. You gain valuable performance experience, receive a detailed critique sheet, and pride in having performed in public! You get an Adjudicator's report too, so you can see how you went, and this well help you in your preparation for any future music exam or performance.
NOTE TO PARENTS AND FRIENDS
Encourage your child to enter the Monash Youth Music Festival this year. With new graded AMEB standard competitions, non-competitive sections including duets, there is bound to be something your child might enjoy!

If you feel that there is something missing from this year's Schedule, then why not join our Committee? We are only limited by the number of Committee members we have! Come along and make the changes you want to see.

JOIN THE AUDIENCE!

Parents, friends, and the general public are welcome to come and watch all the performances at the Monash Youth Music Festival. If you have a family member, friend or student performing in any of the many events, or you would simply like to listen to local young talent, do come and enjoy a musical treat!

We are a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, and proceeds from all ticket sales go towards the cost of running of our Festival.

INAUGURAL SIR ZELMAN COWEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC AWARD

This is an exciting new audition-based competition offering six lucky Finalists the invitation to compete at the 2018 Monash University Chamber Music Festival.

First prize: $1,000
Second prize: $5000
Third prize: $250

There is a strict limit of 16 entrants in this section.

This section comprises a video audition, in which the entrant records a 15-minute programme with accompaniment, and submits it together with Programme Notes. A panel will view all videos and select six Finalists, judged as having performed a balanced program of the highest musical quality, to perform at the Chamber Music Festival.

Music performed for this section shall consist of a balanced programme of three or more pieces not to exceed the overall performance time-limit of 15 minutes. Music should be of a standard similar to pieces in the VCE or AMEB Grade 8 syllabuses or higher.

Unlike our other solo competitions, you must arrange your own accompaniment for this section.

Details will appear in our upcoming Schedule, available on our website shortly before entries open on April 20
