Chicks Have Arrived!

First batch of baby chicks arrived on Tuesday, March 20.  In past years, the temperature has dropped significantly the day the chicks arrive. They need to be kept at 95F or 35C for the first few days, which is a challenge when the temperatures are -20C.  Luckily, the forecast is for sunny weather so we are keeping our fingers crossed that the forecast is right!
Baby chicks LOVE peat moss.  We started experimenting with peat moss in the brooder in 2014 because it is so much more absorbent than wood shavings, the industry standard.  Unfortunately, peat moss is many times more expensive so we give them fresh peat moss in restricted quantities so they get the benefit at a reasonable cost for us (and you).

The rainwater collection system assures clean water for our chickens

The rainwater collection system has already collected 7,000 gallons of snowmelt even though we still have a good 30 cm of snow on the roofs. The cisterns are almost full already.

Our aquifer is contaminated with high levels of nitrates, so we use the snowmelt and rainwater to supply the baby chicks in the brooder as well as the birds out on pasture.  If you have heard the term  "canary in a coal mine", chickens are very negatively affected by nitrates, the chicken equivalent of methane or carbon monoxide.

Our mortality started spiking in 2011 and we could not figure out why until neighbours alerted us to problems with a local aquifer.  One of our customers, Brian Upper, a retired veterinarian and chair of the Steele Springs Water District was especially helpful.
We have a new on-line ordering system and website.  Currently, it involves an extra step at our end until Andrea’s new computer is fully integrated.  Please be patient with us if you don’t get a timely response but if you haven’t heard back within 24 hours, send an email to info@rosebankfarms.ca  Thanks!

Reg Kienast - Artist and local honey producer

Our good friend, Reg Kienast of Wild Mountain Honey, showed his metal and glass art at Headbones Gallery! The opening reception of "Running With The Ball" featured works by Jane Everett, Destanne Norris, Amber Powell and Reg Kienast. Reg and Diane's 3 children flew out to attend (photo left bottom) and the show will run until April 22nd! This is Reg's inaugural show at Headbones and his work and the entire show is incredible!

Farm-Only Pick Up from March 27 - April 25

Kayla will be managing the farm while Steve and Andrea are in Ireland and Scotland from March 27-April 25. During this time, all orders will be pick up at the farm only.  We  will be visiting a selection of pasture poultry operations in Ireland and Scotland as well as catching up with our student intern from last summer, Jen Baker, who is completing her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

We are also volunteering at the Ulster Easter Stages Rally outside Belfast and the Speyside Scottish National Rally in the Highlands.   Of course, a visit to Dublin would not be complete without a tour of the Guinness brewery. Likewise, we would be remiss if we didn't include a tour or two of some of the many fine distilleries in Scotland. Looking forward to some beer or whiskey brined chicken....  Slainte!

Rosebank Farms' French Mistrel Gris chicks
Rosebank Farms' Mistrel Gris chickens

Mistral Gris - made for pasturing

We are planning to produce two batches of Mistral Gris chickens this year. After trialling many batches of chickens with French genetics over the last 7 years, the Mistral Gris chicks that we bought from True North hatchery (www.truenorthfarm.ca) were the healthiest, tastiest birds AND had the nicest disposition of the ones that we have had on trial.

The reason that we have been trialling birds with French genetics is that the French poultry industry has been commercially raising birds on pasture since the 1960's and has developed a variety of commercially available genetic lineages suitable for outdoor production, with stronger legs, and healthier cardiovascular systems (less susceptible to heart attacks) than the North American white birds.

Disposition is important to us because flighty birds or overly docile birds present contrasting management problems.  Flighty birds are prone to excessive stress which can be caused by a number of factors eg. someone entering the brooder too quickly, sneezing or coughing. This  causes them to panic, crash around and injure themselves or each other. We are always trying hard to keep them happy and safe, avoiding any stress hormones such as adrenaline.
In contrast, overly docile birds (the white ones) are easy pickings either in their brooder pens or out on pasture because they are generally very intent on eating and are slow moving, making them easy targets for aerial predators including crows, hawks and owls.

If you bought Mistral's from us last year, please let us know if you liked them and would like to order more.  If you didn't like them, we would very much like to know why!  We can improve based on what we hear from our customers.  We can't address problems that we don't know exist!
