In News.....

The first of Council's cycling based community engagement activities took place on Sunday March 25 with a  Family Bike Day that many ventured to Pipemakers Park to enjoy. There were special guest speakers from Phillip Boyle Associates, Rilu Electric Bikes, Wheel Women, The Good Cycles and Cycle Style plus maps and plans for infrastructure works from both the West Gate Tunnel Project and Council. Lots of people helped out with their thoughts on the current and upcoming cycle projects which was the main agenda for the day. But by far everyone's favourite part was  getting a hold of a freebie at Wheely's coffee or the Footscray Rotary BBQ, not to mention spinning their own smoothie at Bike n Blend and having a boogie to the bike beats provided by Cargone Courriers. Thanks to everyone who attended and stay tuned for more biking news in the near future.

Maribyrnong River Trail Shared Path Widening

The Maribyrnong River Trail shared path along Van Ness Avenue opposite Hillside Crescent in Maribyrnong is due for a revamp. The work taking place between March 28 and April 20 includes reconstruction and widening of the existing asphalt shared path, reconstruction of the existing kerb and channel along the path, replacement of existing timber log fencing with post rails as well as installation of ezy-guard smart safety barrier behind the kerb.

Traffic controllers will be engaged to maintain traffic flow and divert cyclists as well as pedestrians on the road with appropriate traffic management around the work site. Please avoid this area if you can or use this alternative route.

Be alert for Queensland Fruit Fly!

If you cut open a fruit and find tiny maggots, you may have been visited by the Queensland Fruit Fly. Unfortunately this serious horticultural pest has become established in Victoria, and gardeners will need to become familiar with control measures which include fine netting, trapping, good garden hygiene and planting resistant varieties. Please report any incidences (especially in bought produce) to the Department of Agriculture to help with monitoring efforts that will protect our farmers and visit Prevent Fruit Flies for more information on prevention and control.

My Smart Garden

The My Smart Garden program is a highly successful sustainable gardening program concepted and managed by three local councils in inner west Melbourne – Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. We actively strive to build the resilience of local people living with a changing climate and scarcer resources.
Since 2011, our program has grown a network of over 1500 urban gardeners are now gardening ‘smarter’: that is, harvesting and using water efficiently, growing food, using organic pesticides, recycling wastes and using vegetation to shelter their homes. Our program aims to deliver training, provides best-practice gardening resources and build community connections around sustainable urban gardening. For more information, visit: www.mysmartgarden.org.au.
