Add another branch to the Notre Dame AD tree as Fighting Irish Senior Assoc. AD (Compliance & Policy Management) Bodensteiner is named the new boss at Saint Joseph's, becoming the first female to lead the Hawks. SJU Prez Reed: "College athletics grounded in strong Jesuit education is a cornerstone of our history and tradition and a point of passion for thousands of our students, alumni and Hawks fans around the globe. A Notre Dame veteran like Jill understands this ethos and is perfectly suited to build on the highly successful program that Don DiJulia has stewarded." Bodensteiner: "My 20 years as a senior administrator at a Catholic university and my passion for the holistic development of students have prepared me well to lead athletics at Saint Joseph’s." Intro presser set for Thursday with a start date of June 1. (link, link)
Eastern Michigan makes the difficult decision to discontinue its Softball, Men's & Women's Swim & Dive, Wrestling & Women's Tennis programs at the end of the Spring in an effort to right-size the athletics budget by a reduction of $2.45M. Eagles AD Wetherbee, who as a Baseball student-athlete at Ferris State (DII) experienced the same sport cut, "It is a very sad day. As a former college student-athlete who went through this process when my sport was eliminated, I empathize with how difficult this is for our impacted student-athletes. [...] My heart goes out to all those who are disrupted by this change." Per the release, "The University considered many factors, including: program cost, athletic facilities (current and on-going), and a comparison of sports sponsored by MAC schools." Includes presser video. (link); Here's the university's full Q&A doc on the move. (link)
Jacksonville State AD Seitz pens to the Gamecocks fanbase on a commitment to "rebuild our home" after a tornado severely damaged campus & impacted a number of JSU athletic facilities. Hoops, softball, soccer & tennis venues all in need of repairs. Seitz: "Jacksonville State has the distinction of having the 'Friendliest Campus in the South,' and I believe that sentiment reaches well beyond our university. Many lost their homes Monday night, but Jacksonville is a tight-knit community, made up of strong, compassionate citizens willing to help a neighbor in need. [...] While the road to recovery may seem long, the people of Jacksonville will rebuild our home." (link)
Texas Prez Fenves says Longhorns AD Del Conte has exceeded even his expectations through the first 100 days on the job. Senior Assoc. AD for Media Relations Bianco on his new boss, "He’s tireless. The energy and passion that he has and uses to manage a pretty daunting job is unbelievable." Early wins for Del Conte include $32M worth of commitments, implemented monthly HC meeting for the exchange of ideas & started to build a comprehensive facilities plan for the department. In his own words, "I’m up to speed enough. My goal coming in was to learn the culture. I wanted to see through the eyes of the people who work here and get a better understanding of what this place means inside out and outside in. [...] I understand more the gravitas of the job and what it means to be working for the University of Texas, but there’s always a curve ball coming." Big 12 Commish Bowlsby calls Del Conte's personality "engaging" after former Big 12/8 boss Neinas jokes, "Chris talked probably 50 percent of the time at league meetings when he was the TCU AD. I’m assuming he’ll talk all the time now." More. (link)
Kansas State boss Taylor with his latest department update, says there are no plans on the table to replace Bramlage Coliseum, but is pushing for modernization that could include new seats. Nor are there plans to add sports like Softball or Wrestling to the Wildcats portfolio. A video board is tentatively part of the new Baseball venue & Taylor notes, "it's just all going to be about funding, what the project comes in when it's bid by the contractor, if we can make all that work. Learfield has been a great supporter of our program in a lot of ways and so they've obviously wanted to step up and help us with that, so if we can get one out there we'll definitely do it." (link - video, link - transcript)
Former Tennessee AD Hamilton chats with Northern Illinois AD Frazier in Hamilton's latest 'From The Chair' podcast. The pair review Frazier's leadership philosophy of getting the right people in the right seats, then developing & empowering them to be able to do the job at a high level on a daily basis. Frazier also points to the importance of solid mentors, which for him was Wisconsin AD Alvarez. Of note, "Getting people around you who take personal responsibility and hold themselves accountable for their actions is invaluable. […] As a leader, you need to be able to learn from challenging experiences, then provide honest assessment and feedback and do it in a very direct way." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner with part one of his conversation with new Pac-12 Networks boss Shuken & it's full of goodies. For example, Shuken notes the limited downside, but extreme upside in the current structure of Pac-12 media rights as Wilner says it's plenty clear that every move currently being made is about leveraging full control of the league's content come 2023-24 when the current deals are up. Shuken: "We went to one (new media) entity, and when we explained our timeframe, (they) cut us off. They said, ‘We don’t want you to sell your rights again until we have a chance to talk to you.’ They’re going to evaluate our value differently than the current distributors." Shuken also hints that current carriage agreements with distributors may be far longer than the industry standard of five or six years, noting "the fortress is secure." There's also this eye-opener in reference to conference-wide sponsorship by AT&T, "We’re hopeful that DirecTV will choose to launch the networks the way everyone else carries the networks. But I would rather work with another wireless partner than an entity whose television partner doesn’t choose to carry the networks." (link)
Yahoo's Wetzel: "College to pros in days? NHL model perhaps offers best reform solution in wake of NCAA hoops scandal." Thesis: "Could this work in basketball? Absolutely. Right now, other than for the obvious lottery picks, entering the NBA draft is a leap into the darkness. It comes after myriad voices offer contrasting and often confusing advice on whether to go or stay. Different potential agents say different things. College coaches have their own motivations. A player’s support system, as the FBI scandal shows, is ripe to be bought off. […] It also isn’t some theory that needs to be tested. It’s been in practice for years. The NHL isn’t as big of a business as the NBA, but it’s still big business. Donato was one of about 190 NHL draft picks playing college hockey this winter – a number that includes 10 first-round picks. It’s working fine. There are minimal problems." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
An ESPN trio goes behind the scenes with UMBC MBB on the 72 hours around its historic upset. From Fortnite shoutouts to congratulatory remarks from NBA superstar & former Syracuse student-athlete Anthony to new swag from Under Armour & Golden State Warriors standout Curry, the Retrievers lived in the moment & the university in the spotlight. HC Odom: "What I think about is the kids being told, 'You can't do this or you can't do that.' Whether it's in sports or outside sports. What our kids accomplished should be a lesson to everybody that, yeah, you can do it." Lots more. (link)

In a memo to the Board of Regents, New Mexico AD Nunez requests that all but about $1.1M of the athletic department's $7.5M+ deficit be forgiven, and that the remaining payments be spread out over the next ten years, with $110K due annually for the first nine years and $140,824 due the final year. The memo, in part: "With direction from the University Administration, the proposal is to have the Board of Regents buy out a substantial portion of the athletics department deficit using specific funds available to them which to date have not been designated for other purposes." The Lobos have a projected $3.3M deficit this fiscal year, which is more than double any deficit in the past decade. Though Nunez will hold off commenting until the Regents meet tomorrow, here is more from the memo: "The deficit has been accumulating since 2006 with numerous factors contributing to it. This includes expenses outpacing revenues, expenses being understated, revenues being overstated, a lack of consistent fiscal oversight within the department and university, and a lower level of institutional support compared to our peer institutions." (link)
Still no word from SCOTUS on the sports gambling case (PASPA) currently on its docket. A decision could come today or on April 2, which doubles as the MBB National Championship date. However, UConn Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Eskin testified at a legislative hearing on the possibly of an expansion of the laws within the state. Of note from Eskin, "...we acknowledge that the introduction of legalized wagering on intercollegiate sports may add undue pressure and influence to this vulnerable population. […] It seems to us that the NCAA will have to re-assess their position should it be repealed, but we do not know at this point what that would look like. The path forward could range from the status quo, a championship policy that only considers amateur sports betting as a factor in hosting tournament play, or to a complete repeal of the policy." (link)
Stats guy Pomeroy pens for The Athletic on "What effect pace has on a team's ability to avoid an upset." No real conclusion drawn, but here are some of Pomeroy's thoughts: "...it’s long been a thought among basketball people, whether their worldview was influenced by analytics or not, that playing high-possession games gives the favorite more opportunities to demonstrate its superiority. ... A long shot is more likely to win a one-possession game against a dominant team than a 70-possession game. But a one-possession game is merely a thought experiment and not possible in the real world. [...] The lowest winning percentage is for teams in games that were expected to be about average in terms of scoring. Hardly the evidence we need to make specific claims that the slow pace of Cincinnati and Virginia contributed to their respective downfalls. ... it seems that playing a certain style doesn’t make a team any more upset-proof." (link)
Penny: Memphis Prez Rudd & AD Bowen introduced former Tigers & NBA stud Hardaway as the new MBB HC. Rudd specifically noted the the ~$4.7M lost in season ticket sales & contributions this past year as a reason for the change. CBSSports.com's Parrish says the Tigers' brand flipped 180-degrees in just 24 hours as Hardaway noted expectations of being able to attract elite-level talent into his program. (link, link); Here's Hardaway's full intro announcement & media session. (link, link); Also, Wichita State MBB HC Marshall released Memphis-based high school star Lomax from his commitment to the Shockers, presumably so he can play for Hardaway, his high school HC, "Obviously, we take commitments to the Shocker program very seriously, but this is a very unique situation where a young man's mentor and coach since the 5th grade has become a DI HC. Allowing him out of his NLOI without any penalty is the right thing to do." (link)
More Personnel: Longtime Minnesota Men's Hockey HC Lucia steps down, will serve as Special Asst. to the AD & focus on 3M Arena fundraising. (link); Virginia AD Williams on the clock with a big hire as WBB HC Boyle retires due to a family matter. (link); New Ole Miss MBB HC Davis says his program will respect our nation & stand for the national anthem. (link); Michigan State MBB HC Izzo says he doesn't expect to go anywhere. (link); Sam Houston State Softball HC Brock announces his plans to call it a career after this season. (link); Navigate Research CEO/Founder Maestas names SVP for Client Strategy Nelson as the firm's new Prez.  (link); Fresno Bee journalist Warszawski on the exit of Fresno State senior leader Donovan to the AD post at Stanislaus State (DII), "To be clear, #FresnoState now needs a permanent athletic director, an associate AD for finance and an associate AD for development. You'd think the new AD will be allowed to bring in his/her people, but that means these important jobs won't be filled for months." (link); Pretty interesting read on how Clemson MBB HC Brownell earned the job nine years ago, including notes on former Mississippi State & current Western Kentucky HC Stansbury interviewing & being called a cross between Rick Barnes & Joel Osteen. (link); Interesting interactive graphic from ESPN on the highest paid public employee in each state. Obviously lots of FB & MBB HCs. (link); Idaho State's prez search is down to three, all of whom will interview April 2: Boise State COO/VP and Special Counsel Satterlee, Weber State Prez Wight, and ISU EVP/Provost Woodworth-Ney. Missouri Science and Tech EVC for Academic Affairs/Provost Marley is no longer in contention. (link)
Good read from former Auburn staffer & current New York Yankees digital/social team member Smith on the challenge of volume vs. engagement on social channels. Smith: "I see accounts with a million followers getting an engagement rate of less than 1 percent. Pair this with the volume of content that is shared and it’s made me wonder if at times in this industry we dilute our own product. […] It’s time to take a step back and give serious thought to content volume and distribution strategy." Smith also details thoughts around 1) Get rid of the pressure; 2) Define the rules; 3) Focus on quality; 4) Package content differently; and, 5) Listen to the metrics. (link)

WDRB's Crawford expects Louisville Interim AD Tyra to be moved into the role permanently by the end of this week or early next. Tyra, of course, is currently leading the process to hire a new MBB HC & Crawford points to Xavier's Mack "sooner rather than later." Crawford also lauds Interim MBB HC Padgett for never losing sight of pushing to give his student-athletes the best experience. (link); In addition to his MBB search, Interim AD Tyra has been in discussion with highly-successful WBB HC Walz on an extended deal. Walz says he doesn't want to go anywhere. (link)
In response to recent data that showed North Carolina graduating black male student-athletes at a GSR of 56% - 56th out of 65 schools noted - Tar Heels Senior Assoc. AD Ille, "The NCAA keeps its IPP data, the keep track of the incoming student athletes at each Division 1 school and they’ll give you the institution’s test scores and core GPA. We did an evaluation of our institution against U.S. News and World Report top eight public universities … No matter what group of schools we compared to, we were either better, or we compared favorably." Carolina AD Cunningham notes there's no data on how close those who haven't yet graduated are to matriculating or why some student-athletes fail to graduate. In the same Faculty Athletics Committee meeting, UNC's 2017-18 fiscal year produced $92.617M in revenues over $92.392M in expenses. Multimedia assets & tickets sales accounted for 30.24% & 25.91% of revenues, respectively. A bit more. (link)
Arkansas Online went digging through tens of thousands of more pages of communication between Arkansas leaders, this time focused on how the department dealt with some questions from the public on fundraising activities. Razorback Foundation Executive Director Varady & his staff at times asked for feedback from the athletic department on how to respond to inquiries, which Arkansas Press Association general counsel Tull says "puzzled" him due to the private nature of the Foundation as a business entity versus the public standing of the athletic department. Lots here, including former Hogs AD Long advising fundraising gains be specified in 'Year in Review' correspondence to the fan base to correct "misinformation" in the marketplace. (link)
Last week, City Council Prez Clarke announced his opposition to Temple's on-campus stadium proposal, but TU VP of Public Affairs Bergman will try to show North Philly residents that they will benefit from the venue and says the university is committed to entering into a legally binding community-benefits agreement. Bergman: "Anything you say you’re going to do you have to put down in a written document. We would gladly enter into that at any given time, but all the neighbors would need to get together and try and do that. ... Right now, it’s obvious there are people that are not happy with [the stadium], and I think the way we tried to present in that large setting was extremely difficult. I thought there was a great deal of people there who wanted to see the presentation." Bergman indicates Temple has already submitted its proposal for the stadium to the Philly Planning Commission, but officials there deny receiving it. The university has yet to release the results of the $1.25M feasibility study, which is said to include traffic plans, parking and elements of the stadium's design. (link)
Witt/Kieffer refunded the $110K it charged for services rendered in the search for East Carolina's chancellor after it was discovered that "inaccurate salary information" was provided from the chosen candidate's previous jobs. Witt/Kieffer Prez/CEP Chastain apologetic in the situation, but the firm is still banned from future business with the North Carolina System, though there are five active searches between the two parties. System Prez Spellings: "Based on conversations with this board, there was clear agreement that WK’s performance on this search did not meet our expectations in terms of communications with the search consultant -- having nothing to do at all with ECU’s chancellor or the other candidates in the search. Given this, we issued a directive to our constituent institutions on January 25, 2018, that barred any new search business with WK." (link)
Also Noticed: Colorado State renews with Aspire after a record-setting year and what AD Parker describes as "significant enhancements to the way we serve our fans." FB season tickets reached 15,447 with new ones totally 5,750, both all-time highs. (link);  Check out this video for Amazon Prime's series behind the scenes of of Michigan FB - kicks off April 6. (link); Another neat promo video, this one for ESPN's new morning show, 'Get Up,' that has high hopes. (link); Reese's and the NCAA celebrate a decade-long partnership this year. New this year to the Reese's Final Four weekend is a community event in partnership with Wounded Warrior Project. Navy alum and basketball legend Robinson will be a part of the events, as well. (link); Some Kansas FB fans sponsored a billboard outside of Topeka that quotes ESPN's Le Batard, who called the Jayhawks "the most incompetent thing I've seen in major sports." The group also created SaveKSFB.com and on there calls for AD Zenger's job. (link); Kentucky FB will host Eastern Illinois in Commonwealth Stadium in 2020. (link); Another new pro FB league planned. This one has some serious backing from private equity money & a TV deal with CBS. (link)
Correction: In a clip yesterday on the potential decrease in student fees directed to athletics at Louisville, it should be clarified that the athletic department worked proactively with the Student Government Association & Dean of Students to reduce the fee. The tuition and fees task force ultimately made the recommendation to U of L's President & Provost.
A mid-career crisis? Yep, that's what the data shows according to a variety of research as former Wall Street Journal assistant editor Gibbons suggests for HBR: 1) Create lateral opportunities for those needing intellectual stimulation; 2) Develop an internal mission for those needing a deeper sense of purpose; 3) Encourage mentorship roles; and, 4) Offer physical moves or enable remote work for those needing a change of scenery. Closing: "Workers at the beginning and end of their career are important, but overlooking those in the middle sets companies up to lose valuable knowledge and experience. To get these employees to stick with their employers until they get back to the happy second half of their careers, managers have to make plans for their mid-career employees so both the company and the employees benefit." (link)
