Tickets go on sale today to the general public for the many and varied events in this year’s Guernsey Literary Festival. The membership scheme has started well, with advance ticket sales from last Friday giving members the chance to buy up to six tickets before they went on sale today to the general public. So if have become one of our members, a big thank you. Apart from getting some of your tickets early, you are helping us put on this very special event.

Katie Piper, Rachel Joyce, Professor Steve Jones, Dr Rangan Chatterjee, Juliana Buhring, Lara Dearman, Martin Edwards, June Sarpong (MBE), Huw Kingston, Mimi Anderson, Denise Welch and Terry Waite (CBE) have been added to the long list of fascinating people who will speak to audiences at the Festival, which is being held from 10 - 13 May. We also have some great family events, including a family friendly event celebrating the Harry Potter books, two Beatrix Potter tea parties and an interactive performance by poet, comedian and entertainer Murray Lachlan Young.

We have had to change the dates of our events to coincide with the launch of the new film The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which will be released in cinemas nationwide next month. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, the film stars Lily James as Juliet.

The Guernsey Literary Festival events, kindly sponsored by PraxisIFM, will now be held on 14 April and will feature the writer Annie Barrows, film producer Paula Mazur and screenwriter Thomas Bezucha.

This year’s WriteStuff writing competition, which is open to local pupils of all ages, and was launched as part of the Guernsey Literary Festival, closes this Friday, 23 March. For this year’s 300-word competition the theme is Conflict, relevant because 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Entrants to the competition, which is kindly sponsored by Julius Baer, are split into three age classes. The judges will be Tony Booth, Rachel Wyatt and the children’s author Ross Montgomery, and there will be prizes awarded for winning entries.

More information and entry details are available on the WriteStuff website or from the Guille-Allès library or school libraries.
