Brown Bag Author Series

Monday, April 2 @ 12 noon - Join the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library for a talk with author Beth Hautala about her new book for middle grade readers. No registration necessary, just bring a sack lunch or enjoy the light refreshments provided.
 Crow Wing County Master Gardener Class - Tuesday, April 10 @ 12 noon - Garden Seeds: Starting, Sowing and Saving with JoAnn Weaver** - Are you having trouble finding the "exact" variety of a certain plant that you want to see in your garden? Relax: seeds might just be the answer! Learn where to find the seeds you are looking for and how to start them indoors, how to gather seeds from your bounty and give yourself a head start on next year's garden.

Family Book Club

Wednesday, April 11 @ 4pm - April's selection is The Lightning Thief. Join us to discuss this book, ideal for kids ages 8-12. Copies of the book are available at the front desk. No sign up needed.
Appointments are full, but the AARP volunteers will still be taking walk-ins on Monday and Wednesday afternoons through April 11, in the library's large meeting room. This is a free service provided by volunteers to taxpayers with low and middle income in Crow Wing County. Call the library for details or visit this website to find a location near you.
Brainerd Adult Book Club - Wednesday, April 11th @ 1pm - We'll be discussing The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty. Working as a quality control inspector at a toy factory in Rhode Island, friendless alcoholic Smithy Ide considers himself a loser until a tragic event prompts him to set off on an epic cross-country bicycle journey. Books Burgers & Brews book club will meet on April 16, 2018 at 6pm at Prairie Bay Grill for our next book discussion of The Good Lord Bird by James McBride and enjoy a custom food and drink menu just for us! (Click here to RSVP, limited to 65 people)
The Brainerd Public Library is inviting area residents ages 13 and older to submit a canvas art piece inspired by the historic Brainerd water tower. Ten winners will be chosen by a panel of local artists. Deadline for submitting a finished piece is April 9, 2018. For full rules, entry form and canvas, contact the library.*
Join us for a celebration of the nearly 100-year history of the Brainerd Water Tower on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Everyone is welcome to come from 4:00-6:00pm to view the artwork created by community members and enjoy refreshments provided by the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library. 
Brainerd City Council member Dave Badeaux will give a presentation on the history of the water tower at 6:00pm in the library's large meeting room.*

No registration required for either event.
Legends of the Wilderness with Jacques La Christian - Wednesday, April 18 @ 5:30pm - Come out and enjoy a reenactment of the 1800’s with David  Popilek as French Canadian Voyageur, Jacques La Christian. Flintlock rifles and pistols, along with furs of various types used in the fur trade in the US and Canada will be on display for viewing.*

Computer Classes

If you are new to computers, haven't used them for a while, are a little unsure and uncomfortable, or just need a bit of a refresher, we have the tools to help you tackle technology at your own pace and gain the confidence you need to succeed. All classes taught using computers equipped with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2013, unless otherwise noted. Class size limited to 10 students.

Saving Digital Stuff Part 2: Files, Scanning and Organization - Once we've decided which digital storage options we want to use, we still need to know how to save, how to scan items, and how to organize all the pieces. Basic familiarity with computers required. Register here.


Wednesday April 18, 9:30-11:30am
Intro to iPads
 - Learn the basics, like navigating settings and finding & using apps. Try one out before you invest. No experience required. Register here.
 
Thursday April 26, 2:30-4:30pm
Computer Basics II - Once you've practiced your mouse skills, learn about kinds of devices, file types and popular websites (Facebook, eBay, Pinterest, YouTube) and what they are for. Register here.

Wednesday, April 25 @ 6-8pm - Writers' Workshop: Tame the Memoir Monster: What to Put In, What to Leave Out with instructor Angela Foster.* We’ll discuss memoir and do some quick writing exercises. You’ll leave with a better understanding of story and how to hone it down to the best it can be. Registration required; call the library or register online here.

Thursday through Saturday, April 19-21 - Friends of the Brainerd Public Library book sale at the Westgate Mall, in the former Foot Locker location. We accept your gently used books, audiobooks, and DVDs any time the library is open; please call if you have questions.

The Last Word

Love books and authors? Love wine and a great time? Join the Friends of the Library for the 6th Annual Wine and Words fundraising event at GrandView Lodge! This year the festivities are extended to two unique events: the evening of August 9th and a new luncheon with the authors on August 10th. Tickets go live online on April 1st; this event sells out every year, so be sure to get your tickets early! See the Friends of the Library website for all the details, including the incredible author lineup.

Teen Events

Blackout Poetry - All month for National Poetry Month, stop by and try your hand at blackout poetry, where you select the words to create your poem and 'black out' the rest. We provide the book pages and markers, you provide the creativity!
