Pastor's Message

Don’t Miss the Chapters in the Middle!

If we think of Holy Week as a book, Palm Sunday can be considered Chapter One. It contains the story of Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem as he was hailed as the long-awaited Messiah. We celebrated that day with fanfare—the waving of palms, the singing of Hosanna and even a visit from a distant descendant of Jesus’ “royal” conveyance into the city—a donkey.

The concluding chapter of the Holy Week culminates with a wonderful and life-changing surprise—the resurrection and empty tomb which we celebrate at the Easter Vigil and with joyful praise and worship on Easter Sunday.

But what about the chapters in the middle? Surely you would be disappointed if you were starting a new read, got absorbed in the story, and then discovered that the middle chapters were missing, and you were left with only the conclusion. Even the most inexperienced storytellers know that every story has a beginning, a middle and an ending.

You don’t have to be content with “reading” only the first and final chapters of the story of Holy Week and Easter. We will provide opportunities to hear the middle chapters as we gather for worship on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

MAUNDY THURSDAY   March 29 at 7:00 p.m.
Hear the story of Jesus and his disciples celebrating the Passover meal and his commandment to love, and watch a reenactment of the disciples contemplating Jesus’ shocking words that, “One of you will betray me…” Share the meal that we have come to know as the Lord’s Supper. Contemplate Jesus’ betrayal and arrest as the altar is stripped and we leave in silence.

GOOD FRIDAY   March 30 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Hear the story of Jesus’ passion, death and burial. Bring your prayers to the cross in the form of a lighted candle. At 7:00, listen in on a conversation between Jesus’ mother, Mary, and his friend John.

You will better understand and appreciate the last chapter of our story, celebrated at Easter, if you have “read” the chapters in between.

Then be sure to celebrate the concluding chapter of the Holy Week story by worshipping with us at the Easter Vigil and/or our Festival Services on Easter Sunday.

EASTER VIGIL   March 31 at 5:00 p.m.     EASTER SUNDAY   April 1 at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Join us for the whole book: the first, last and middle chapters
of the most exciting and life-changing story you will ever hear!

In Christ’s service,

Mission of the Month
OUR MISSION OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL:  FAMILY PROMISE

We will be collecting money for the purchase of needed computer equipment and software for the Family Promise Day Center, where the guests spend much of their days. These items are necessary to help the guests with their search for jobs, housing and additional needs, as well as to help the staff run the day center efficiently and provide the best possible assistance to the guests.

On another note, an exciting decision has been made to actually host the families here at Church of the Resurrection! Our first host week will be May 20 through 26. We will offer training right here at COR on Sunday, April 15, at 11:30 AM.  The training will take about two hours, and lunch will be served. I hope you will consider helping with this important mission. There is a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center for the training.

As a host church, we will also need some supplies for our guests. A sign-up for those items will also be available soon at the Welcome Center.

Please contact me at 262-894-2639 or lkdischer@gmail.com with any questions.

Save the date—

APRIL 8 is Holy Humor Sunday!

The joy doesn’t end on Easter Sunday. In fact, for Christians, it’s just the beginning! This year, we’re bringing an ancient (but new to COR) tradition to our congregation. Holy Humor Sunday will be held on Sunday, April 8—the first Sunday after Easter.

More than just a day of light-hearted fun, the day has a solid theological and historical background. After all, what can we do but celebrate when the One who once was dead has risen from the grave to live eternally?!!

What’s YOUR part on this day?

•    Be here—the more, the merrier! (Really—the more people, the more fun!!!)
•    Be ready to participate fully!
•    Dress up in something silly! Do you have an old Halloween costume lying around? A Hawaiian shirt and/or grass skirt? Wear your pajamas! Be mismatched, backward, inside out! Crazy wig in your closet? Swim fins and a snorkel? Wear ‘em to church!
•    If you wish, bring a (church-rated) joke or two to share with everyone—we’ll have a few minutes of ‘open mic’ time for this.
•    Arrive happily. Leave joyfully.

Help us pay for VBS

We would like to make Vacation Bible School free for all children. Can you help us?

There is a display in the narthex with 17 envelopes, each with dollar amounts ranging from $5 to $100. Would you be willing to take an envelope, fill it with cash or a check, and place it in the office or offering plate? The money — a total of $540 — will cover fees for the children who attend VBS 2018: Splash Canyon.

Please make your checks out to “Church of the Resurrection” and write “VBS” in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity!
