D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Louisiana & Stanford. Post your openings here.
Dave Hart is back in the mix as he'll return to ECU as Special Advisor for Athletics with a focus on the current MBB HC search. No word on how long the appointment will last in Greenville or what Hart will be paid. Chancellor Staton: "During his more than 30 years in college athletic administration, Dave Hart led some of the most successful athletic programs in the country. We believe his extraordinary experience combined with his knowledge of ECU will be uniquely helpful as we search for the best leadership for our athletics program in the coming years. I look forward to working with Dave and gaining from his insight in the coming months. (link); More on Staton in a profile from the News & Observer as some in Pirate Nation have pointed to the Chancellor as leading the institution in the wrong direction. Staton is not short on goals, "This sleepy little school in Eastern North Carolina is not going to be a sleepy little school anymore. We're going to become America's next great national university. We have all of the components to do that. The impact that we have on this state cannot be disputed based on data and the facts. We're proud of that, and that Pirate pride runs deep across North Carolina." Athletics noted as a key unit for the university, but also a point of frustration at the moment. Full rundown of projects on Staton's desk, as well as this quote, "I told the committee coming in the door, if you’re looking for a status quo chancellor, I'm not your guy. But if you really and truly want to take that next step, put me in, coach. I'm ready. I like a challenge." (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert on the new C-USA TV deal, "It’s a good, forward step for all the institutions on the whole. We are going to receive more revenue from this. It's a significant increase from where we were last year. In this day and age, with the way consumers are viewing things, for us to increase our TV dollars is a positive step. We would always like to see more, but this is a great step forward for the league […] There are a lot of times we may be on a certain network or entity and we have to cover the production costs. That can be expensive. So, in this deal, (CBS Sports Network, Stadium or Facebook will be) covering the production cost of putting the game on. It’ll be a high-quality production, which is really encouraging." (link); Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak chips in his two cents, of note,"beIN Sports wasn't mentioned, but they remain a rightsholder for 2018-19. Their agreement was one year longer than the expiring CBSSN and ESPN agreements. Per North Texas AD Wren Baker, the conference is still talking with both them and ESPN. The talks with ESPN might end up being about how schools can self-produce content to air on ESPN3." (link)
USA Today's publishes thoughts on gun control offered by a list of MBB student-athletes participating in the NCAA Tournament. International student-athletes who commented pointed to fewer issues in their home countries, student-athletes from Chicago mentioned the unstable nature of guns in their hometown & Kentucky HC Calipari says he regularly talks to his squad about social issues. Gonzaga student-athlete Perkins: "I’m stuck in the middle. I think you should be able to protect yourself at all times, but I also think it’s easy to make bad decisions if (guns) are readily available. I think maybe if you have a gun you need to go through a lot of tests? Maybe have to have it locked up in a safe? I don’t know. But I just don’t think kids should have it, or people who don’t deserve to have it. " More. (link)
Miller v Minnesota Duluth: With a unanimous vote that found UMD liable on both counts (that UMD discriminated against Miller on the basis of her sex and retaliated against her for making Title IX complaints when officials decided in December 2014 not to offer her a new contract), former Women's Hockey HC Miller was awarded $3.74M yesterday - $744K in past lost wages and $3M for emotional distress. Miller: "It’s a big day for women. Women in general, but especially women in college athletics." Her lawyer, Siegel: "It’s a real rebuke to the leadership of UMD, and to the athletic department in particular. I hope it’s a new day for this university and this community as women all over the world are saying, 'Time’s up.'" (link)
Holy Cross will keep its Crusaders nickname, but will get rid of its knight mascot as debate in Worcester continues on the topic. The knight will be replaced by an interlocking 'HC' on a purple shield as the institution's primary logo. Prez Rev. Boroughs on the knight, "inevitably ties us directly to the reality of the religious wars and the violence of the Crusades. This imagery stands in contrast to our stated values. Over the coming months, the college will gradually phase out the use of all knight-related imagery." (link)
Former Purdue FB student-athlete Evans claims the Boilermakers' athletic department would not allow him to pursue the major of his choice - engineering. "When I was 10 years old, I wrote an article for the local newspaper that asked me what school I wanted to go to and what I wanted to study. I said Purdue University in their school of Engineering. I didn’t know that one day I would actually be able to attend Purdue on an athletic scholarship. But I wouldn’t be able to go for Engineering. Neither would I be able to go for Athletic Training, my second choice, which I wanted to use to create a path into Physical Therapy School. I was told that the Engineering caseload and class schedule would not work, especially if I had dreams of playing. I was told I would not be able to receive my hours for Athletic Training because they were mostly during football season and spring practice. At that point, I was on my third choice which wasn’t even a choice. I was literally just there to play football. Having two choices of my own was more than a lot of my teammates and friends at other schools could say as they were left undecided and thrown into General Studies, Communications or Organizational Leadership and Supervision. So while those on the outside are complaining of paying for school because that’s something they value, imagine getting something for free that you aren’t just not interested in, but also something you don’t really know what to do with it." Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Lots of pushback on Twitter last night with the high camera angle for the NCAA MBB Tourney games in Boise that made it hard to discern arc on jump shots & many times meant student-athletes on the high side of the court were covered by the score bugs of other matchups. Per CBS/Turner: "That is the designated camera position for the arena in Boise. We are looking to modify it for Saturday’s second round coverage." (link)

Former ESPN Prez Skipper says his substance abuse exit was tied to cocaine use & even though he did does not believe it impacted his work, an extortion plot by a dealer is what led to his departure from Bristol. Pretty incredible interview conducted by notable author & ESPN expert Miller. Skipper: "I never allowed it to interfere with my work, other than a missed plane and a few canceled morning appointments. I’ve never been a daily user. My use over the past two decades has, in fact, been quite infrequent. I judge that I did a very good job and that it did not get in the way of my work. I worked hard, I worked smart. I worked all the time." On his admission to Disney boss Iger, "It was an agonizing weekend. I don’t think I ate for the 48 hours. I was filled with great regret and tension. My stomach was churning. I wasn’t sleeping. I was despondent. I was panicked. But, no, I never thought about trying to reverse course." More, including Skipper saying he plans to work again. (link)
Sticking with Disney & ESPN for one more clip as a trio of Bloomberg journalists say 21st Century Fox boss Murdoch is waiting for Comcast to formalize its bid for the remaining 61% of Sky before he takes any measures to increase his side's offer. Comcast doesn't technically have to file in the U.K. until the initial Fox-Sky pact is cleared. Comcast NBCUniversal chief Burke: "If the Disney-Fox deal happens, either it’s all going to Disney, or if the Disney-Fox deal doesn’t happen, at some point Fox might buy the whole thing. It’s clearly going to trade, it’s a very unique asset and businesses that we’re very comfortable with. And so we decided to go for it." (link)
Fun (and super long) oral history with thoughts from a number of notable MBB personalities on the growth of the NCAA Tournament. Len Elmore on the impact of the one-and-done rule on the Tourney, "I think that the 'one and done' rule has somewhat of a negative effect on the tournament itself, and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that, you know, it’s almost inescapable that people are going to compare these young people knowing that the next step for them is the pros. They keep injecting NBA talk into college basketball and they’re two different games. I also believe that, you know, you never really get a chance to know and understand these young guys and it creates other distractions with regard to stories about whether they’re actually there to study and et cetera." Lots more. (link)
Nike CEO Parker will stay in Beaverton beyond 2020 to lead the company after Nike brand president Edwards has exited due to "conduct inconsistent with Nike's principles." Edwards was thought to be a main candidate to succeed Parker after his planned date in '20 to step away. Of key note, there are no specific allegations against Edwards at this time & he will still stick around a bit as an advisor to Parker. (link)

Instagram is reportedly thinking about bringing back its chronological feed that got usurped by an algorithmic version just two years ago. From the DailyMail: "The feature is believed to be in early-stage testing and there is no indication of when, or if, it will be rolled out to the masses." (link); Twitter is working on a timeline structure that would bubble more breaking news items to the top of your feed. From BuzzFeed: "The curated news test is currently underway with a small group on iOS and Android in the US and could eventually feature multiple timelines for the same news event, including one that recaps tweets and another with the latest tweets, the spokesperson said." Twitter is also testing a camera-first approach that "would combine location-based photos and videos with Twitter Moments around notable events. Companies could sponsor events or place ads in between tweeted real-time photos and videos." (link, link)

The Koch brothers grew up in Wichita, Kansas and Koch Industries is appropriately headquartered there. The New Yorker's Helfand points to several key factors in Wichita State's recent MBB run: "A wizard of a coach, excellent defensive play, and the deep pockets of the world’s eighth-richest man, the conservative mega-donor Charles Koch." In 2006, Koch Industries donated $6M to renovate the arena, which was renamed in Charles's honor. A phone call in 2015 from Charles convinced MBB HC Marshall not to get on the plane taking him to interview at Alabama and shortly thereafter Marshall signed a $3.3M/year deal to remain with the Shockers. On a more general front: "Koch Industries spent an estimated eight million to twelve million dollars for ads during the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. (The company also advertises prominently on the sidelines of college basketball games.) The ads show a diverse collection of people facing adversity with determination and spirit." (link)
Facility Notes: Portland will get a new eight-lane track, soccer fields, rowing dock and boathouse, and tennis center as part of a campus expansion project. The track, at least, will be ready by late fall of 2019. (link); Auburn opened the Plainsman Patio at Plainsman Park. A $50 season pass or $5 single-game entry for ticketholders allows fans to purchase alcoholic beverages in the patio area. (link); A proposal to demolish University Hall sits before the Virginia Board of Visitors. U-Hall served as home to the basketball programs until 2006 when John Paul Jones Arena opened. The proposal says demolishing the building would "accommodate projected future athletic program needs” and allow for better future development of the Hoos' athletic district. (link)
Faculty and staff at Eastern Michigan are asking the school to look more closely at its "sacred cow" (the athletics budget) amid news that nearly 60 positions across campus will be cut to erase a $4.5-5.5M deficit. Their argument points to the 2015 subsidy of $27.3M to the athletic department and the new $20M sports medicine and student-athlete training facility. EMU Spokesman Larcom: "Athletics intends to do its part as far as the budgeting process goes, and they are an active part of the budget cuts discussion. (Athletics Director) Scott (Wetherbee) has maintained all along that he feels athletics is a part of the university and everything that is going on, and that we're on the same team. Those discussions with athletics will continue." (link)
Former Penn State VP of University Relations Mahon argues, "University athletic programs should not put their school mascots to work off the field and the court selling commercial products." Thesis: "...a mascot has a bigger role to play for an institution, especially for the best-known institutions. They are a symbol of pride and tradition. […] A good mascot is priceless for a brand. Mickey Mouse, Tony the Tiger, Mr. Clean, Captain Morgan, the Geico Gecko, Colonel Sanders, the Jolly Green Giant and even Burger King’s creepy looking king are tied inextricably with their brands. They are pure pop culture icons. In higher education successful mascots are a key part of our institutions’ brands. They should not be pitching beef jerky and home mortgages on their days off." (link)
Higher Ed Leadership: Pepperdine Prez Benton will step aside in 2019, take on a president emeritus role thereafter. (link); UNLV Prez Jessup on the rumors of his resignation: "Recent media reports about my pending departure are misleading. It’s no secret that a few regents and I have not always agreed on the direction of UNLV under my leadership. Over the last several weeks, I had conveyed to Chancellor Thom Reilly that the governance structure makes long-term sustainability for any president challenging. I continue to be passionate about UNLV and all our initiatives, but expressed to him my intent to begin looking at other opportunities. I am grateful for all the tremendous support on campus and in the community, and I am proud to be president of UNLV.  Thank you for all your hard work and for staying focused on our core responsibilities to move the university forward." (link); The Citadel announces four finalists for its open prez position: West Point graduates include retired Army Gen. Dan Allyn and Army Gen. Robert B. Brown, while retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Ferriter and Marine Corps Gen. Glenn M. Walters are both Citadel grads. (link)
Also Noticed: Army West Point extends its relationship with The Aspire Group on a multi-year basis for ticket sales, marketing & support. (link); Kansas is the latest to suspend all fraternity activities. (link); Ron Bell, former friend & current claimant of Georgia Tech MBB HC Pastner, has landed in jail. (link)
The New York Times profiles Ohio State Women's Hockey HC Muzerall, a former Minnesota All-American who took over the Buckeyes program two years ago. Ohio State had never been to the NCAA Tournament and Muzerall was the third coach in as many years. She went 14-18-5 in her first season, but the team is 24-10-4 this year and playing this afternoon in the semis of the Frozen Four. "Muzzy" instituted biweekly individual meetings with players to discuss hockey and life issues and emphasizes that hockey and college are supposed to be fun. Muzerall: "As excited as we are to be here, and honored, were not going to be the ones that are sitting back as the fourth-ranked team out of four, bedazzled by all the lights and the press. We're here to win a tournament. We're going to come in competitive, and come in ready to rock and roll." (link)
