Upon starting seminary in 2011, my sense of call was in overseas mission service; however, through the course of my internship and classes, I began to sense a call into parish ministry. Nearing graduation, I was confounded by calls in what seemed like two incompatible directions.
God provided an answer, however, when I was invited to be a Global Ministry Fellow with Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (New York City) where I had the opportunity to serve for a year in Zambia (Africa) and travel through the Global South for 2.5 months. I served Theological Education by Extension in Zambia (a partnership of nine denominations) by training lay people to lead churches where pastors might have five or more congregations. I also had the chance to visit ministries in ten different countries through Africa, the Middle East, and other parts of Asia. Upon my return to New York City, I was asked to remain as an associate pastor in which I oversaw our African partnerships and our outreach into the city among other efforts for two years.
Now I’m beginning a journey with the Reformed Church in America (RCA), a close partner of the PC(USA). I’m raising support in order to serve as an associate pastor with the English Language Congregation (ELC) of the National Evangelical Church (NEC) of Bahrain (Middle East). The NEC is a fellowship of seven congregations worshipping in various languages. The ELC is a congregation of 500-600 members including mostly Asian expatriates. The largest national group is from India, about 10% come from Africa, and less than 5% originate from developed nations. It’s a great opportunity to serve a fellowship that shows signs of Revelation 7 with people from all nations, tribes, peoples, and languages worshipping God.
