Festival season is here and so far it's our
busiest itinerary yet! Join us at exciting events in
Europe, North America, and Asia this spring.

The CAN calendar is never more jammed than during festival season each spring. Rightly so, as events are our favourite places to learn, share, and meet readers. We’ve already begun making the rounds through recent trips to South Korea and Germany, and the next few months will be dizzying (in the best possible way!). The following travelogue presents info on where we’ve just been, and teases several exciting festival programmes we are helping organize or participating in.

TouchDesigner Summit (Feb 3–4)

Six weeks ago our peers at Derivative organized the second TouchDesigner summit in Berlin. Over an intense 48 hours of presentations and workshops members of their community shared not only work, but ways of working. We brought an editorial angle to the proceedings, by giving a talk focused on how the tools we use inform and shape creative practice. Read more.

Otherly Space/Knowledge (Mar 2–25)

“Otherly Space/Knowledge” is an exhibition curated by Abe Kazunao at the Asia Culture Center in South Korea. The show questions how knowledge is derived from data in an era where our perception is amplified through global communication networks; we bought some questions of our own, by contributing to panel discussions and engaging with participating artists. Keep an eye on CAN for our review of the exhibition, which is on display through March 25th.

Upcoming
MUTEK_IMG (Apr 11–13)

A month from now MUTEK Montréal will present the 4th edition of MUTEK_IMG, their offshoot festival focused on digital creation. We were invited to curate part of its symposium, and we’ve put together an exciting two days of programming that parses everything from speculative design to the post-truth media landscape. Speakers include Liam Young, Daito Manabe, Madeline Gannon, Régine Debatty, and Tega Brain. Read more.
MINDPARK2018 (Apr 20–23)

We’re curating an exhibition for FRAMED at the annual MINDPARK conference in Shenzhen, which explores creativity, business and culture. Every year the event showcases top global creators through a programme of keynote presentations, masterclasses and an exhibition that simultaneously inspire creativity and commercialisation in the rapidly expanding Chinese market. FRAMED will present six dynamic artists, whose work ranges from video to interactive pieces. Read more.
IAM Weekend 18 (Apr 27–29)

Travelling to Barcelona for IAM Weekend each spring has become a tradition for our team and this year is no exception. Intriguingly, this edition of the “platform connecting the futures of media, learning and the arts” focuses on ‘the subversion of paradoxes.’ Our contribution: engaging in dialogue with artist Alan Warburton following a screening of Goodbye-Uncanny Valley, his compelling 2017 video essay on the wild frontiers of CGI. Read more.
Mapping Festival (May 9–13)

Building on our participation in past editions, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Geneva’s Mapping Festival to curate and produce the educational programme within this year’s (14th!) edition. On May 10th, we’ll host a total of thirteen workshops run by an eclectic mix of artists and designers from the ‘CAN universe’ such as Jürg Lehni, Coralie Gourguechon, Ted Davis, and Dana Zelig at the Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD). More info on how to apply soon! Read more.
HOLO 3

Since last November’s recap, HOLO 3 production has sure picked up. With most of the logistics locked down, we now find ourselves immersed in conversation with featured and contributing artists – things are indeed taking shape. We’ll be sharing details (and sneak peeks) over the coming months and if you haven’t already: order HOLO 2, subscribe, or tell a friend about us to support this publication.
