Bike Club
The Chatham-Kent 4-H Bicycle Club, named the Psycho Cyclers, will be hosting the Ride of Silence in Ridgetown on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. This is an international event to raise awareness about cyclists sharing the road with motorists and to remember cyclists who have been hurt or killed while riding on the road. Ridgetown is one of 390 locations around the world hosting this event: http://www.rideofsilence.org/locations-international.php?i=Canada#Canada. Everyone is invited to meet us at Ridgetown Campus at 6:30 pm and join us for a quiet 10 km ride through Ridgetown. Please join us in riding safely!

CAM 2018
4-H Ontario hosted CAM (Volunteer Conference & Annual Meetings), March 23-25 at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort in Alliston. Representatives from Chatham-Kent were in attendance at this annual event.

Thank you to everyone who supported this year's lawn tractor raffle. The draw was held on April 28th, 2018 at 10am and Rachel Carnegie was the lucky winner of the Cub Cadet XT2 Enduro SLX50 sponsored by Kucera Group Chatham.

2018 4-H Mini Diagnostic Night

The 4-H Mini Diagnostic Night is an annual event that highlights three topics from the Southwest Crop Diagnostic Days for 4-H members and leaders. This evening program offers hands-on learning experiences and a chance to observe some agricultural career options.
The 2018 sessions include:
- Beyond Resistance – Dave Bilyea, University of Guelph. The various ways Ontario’s herbicide resistant weeds spread.
- Getting to the Root of It – Doug Young, University of Guelph and Jake Munroe, OMAFRA. Fertilizer placement, root growth and how we can impact what goes on beneath our feet.
- Early Soybean Growth and Development – Horst Bohner, OMAFRA. How management decisions such as fertility, variety selection, and planting dates are essential components necessary to capture soybeans full yield potential.
Pre-registration is not required, but if you could please email Anne Verhallen, OMAFRA at anne.verhallen@ontario.ca with approximate numbers it would help to assist in planning.
Beverages supplied by Southwest Crop Diagnostic Days.
For safety concerns, closed footwear is recommended.

JFAO Leadership Camp
Essex-Kent Junior Farmers is looking to help cover the cost of any 4-H members from Essex or Kent counties who wish to go to JFAO Leadership Camp.
|
|
|
Leadership Camp is held in June each year at various camp and conference centres across the province. It is open to all Junior Farmer members and senior 4-H members (15 and older). Delegates unite and take part in various team activities. Leadership Camp offers many activities which may include: canoeing, zip line, tight ropes, team building, and unique games that help encourage confidence, communication and goal setting. Delegates are able to take what they learn first-hand and bring that knowledge back to their local clubs and communities.
This year's Leadership Camp will be held at YLCC in Oro-Medante, Ontario on the shores of Lake Simcoe June 8th - 10th. If you would like more information or interested in going, email essexkentjf@gmail.com. The deadline to register is this Friday, May 18th.

OFA Proud to Farm Photo Contest
The Proud to Farm Photo Contest is open to all OFA members and their immediate family members. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each of the three categories, plus an additional grand prize for the Farmers Choice Award. The grand prize will received a Drone valued at $800, while first place winners in each category will receive a $100 prize.
Eligible categories include: Proud to Farm, Farm Scenes and Farm Animals.
Participants will be able to submit their photos through OFA’s website.

IPM 2018
The International Plowing Match and Rural Expo is coming to Pain Court this September! Chatham-Kent 4-H will be there and have a tent within the Tented City. We are also looking for 4-H Members to help greet people as they come through the gates.
In order to help out at the gates, anyone interested will need to fill out a volunteer form which can be found HERE.

The Brian Fox Memorial Agricultural Scholarship is funded by generous donations from various agricultural businesses in Ontario, the Michigan Sugar Company, the OSGA, and the Fox Family.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY - The criteria for student eligibility are acceptable grades, good character, involvement in student activities, and enthusiastic volunteerism. The deserving student will have demonstrated an active involvement in the agricultural community (for example fairs, 4-H, Junior Farmers etc.). The Brian Fox Agricultural Scholarship is open to any graduate, currently attending a high school in Lambton or Kent counties.

ENROLLMENT IN AGRICULTURAL PROGRAM - The applicant must have been accepted into any accredited college or university agricultural program. Students interested in applying must have a minimum GPA Requirement of 2.7 or a high school average of 70% in the top 6 senior classes.

Grants, Scholarships & Awards
4-H Canada offers a variety of financial supports and opportunities each year. We are thankful for the corporate partnerships that allow these to exist for 4-H members, volunteer leaders and provincial 4-H offices. The applications can be accessed at: https://apply.4-h-canada.ca/.
There are some amazing scholarships available right now, with deadlines of May 31—such as the First-Generation Scholarship ($1,000) for 4-H'ers who are the first in their family to pursue a post-secondary education.
