What came first...?

Despite the snow this weekend, my Spring sewing plans are in full swing. Nothing inspires me more than spring colours and floral prints.

So, naturally, with plans being conducted, thoughts have formulated in my head. This week...What comes first, the sewing pattern or the idea? While concocting my own plans, I've been thinking about where my ideas come from and the best way to decide what to make and what perhaps I don't need.

While I know what I do, I'm interested in what everyone else is doing.

Do people make things because they find a sewing pattern that inspires them or do they make something because they have seen a rtw version somewhere which then prompts them to find the sewing pattern to make their own?

Perhaps it's a bit of both but which works best?

I'm a constant online shopping browser. I save things on my ASOS feed, I screenshot everything I like and am constantly taking pictures of styles I like in magazines - Instagram followers will be familiar with this in my stories.

When I first started sewing, I would browse the sewing patterns for inspo and then find the rtw version that matched. I'd get carried away with new pattern releases that i thought I had to make. Sometimes I'd find a winner but more often then not it would rarely get worn.

New pattern releases and the hype that can surround them are a little bit like fashion trends and impulse buying. It's often a decision you regret in the end. It's a hard thing, because when an indie pattern designer releases a new pattern we want to support them but it's important to stay true to what you want.

So I'm transitioning my creative process. I search online for styles I like but won't make it straight away. I search other sources to find similar styles, to see if I like it. I leave it for a couple of weeks and if I can't stop thinking about it, it's probably worth making. I'm trying to be more conscious and I'm trying to take my time.

Therefore three things that are currently on my to make list are: a boiler suit, a utility jacket and a floral tea dress (or perhaps more than one). I've put careful thought into each of things, I've researched and I've thought carefully about their places in my wardrobe and long-term subscribers  might remember all of these items appearing in previous newsletters

With Instagram, vlogs, blogs and all the sources of inspiration we have available to us it can sometimes be hard to filter what we actually need.

Sadly this week looks set to be so busy so despite finding my sewjo, I'm not sure I will have time to set me plans into motion but I am looking forward to hearing from you!

What comes first the sewing pattern or the idea?

Spend Monday online shopping!
You don't need to buy anything but save pictures, add them to Pinterest or make an online moodboard. See what's out there and be inspired.
Stuck for where to look then check out my recommendations below!
Today I’m giving you a bumper version of the inspiration station. This is a list of places go to places for sewing inspiration.
Scroll down to find out which one might be for you.

For your wardrobe staples

Then of course it has to be the Olive Clothing Instagram. If I’m looking for the basics that will pull all of my crazy prints together then Olive Clothing always helps me keep it real.

The Yo! Store is another place that is constantly getting screen grabbed at the moment. I am in love with their simple vintage pieces. Everything from jumpsuits to chic utility jackets. Give me those pastel colours and surround me with plants.

The place that has it all

My ultimate source of inspiration is of course & Other Stories. It’s the only place I will really buy my clothes from and it’s the website I trawl endlessly for sewing inspo. It’s my current place to look for Spring dress inspiration.

High End Dreaming

I love me a designer look! While I can’t afford it and while it probably has no place in my wardrobe, a girl can dream right?

Of course Vogue is my go-to place for some high end daydreams. I’m lucky enough to have a subscription that lets my imagination run wild every month.

I’ve recently found this designer and I wonder how I’ve gone for so long. Delpozo nails bright colours mixed with interesting design lines.

Cool Cali Girl Vibes

Lisa Says Gah has those cool Cali girl vibes nailed. Representing a mixture of Independent designers, I find this the best place for inspiration if you’re trying to find that balance between rocking a print and keeping it chic.

I must admit I’m a little bit of Chelsea fan girl and while Shop Anomie isn’t my everyday style, it’s one of the places I love to browse. It’s the kind of style I’d want to rock if someday I wasn’t so extra…

Give Me Prints Now

If you love a print and a bold one at that then Gorman clothing is the place for you. The print are fun, the style is effortless cool. What more could you want? I mainly follow this on Instagram and it’s made even better when the editorial shots from Design Love Fest role in. *all the heart eyes*

What are you go places for sewing inspiration?
Let me know because I'm always on the hunt for new sources of inspo!
