While we perform year-round, spring marks the beginning of our performance season.

Cherry blossoms at the Japanese Garden

Celebrating Spring

Spring has officially begun, and we're kicking off the season with performances at two of our favorite venues next month!

Did you know that the cherry blossom is the symbolic flower of spring in Japan? During this season, people have cherry blossom parties where they enjoy food, drink, and music underneath the cherry trees, a thousand-year-old tradition called hanami. This year, the Missouri Botanical Garden will be hosting its own garden party on Saturday, April 7, and with a little luck, the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom! Join us at the Japanese Garden’s northeast lawn for an evening of Sake and Sakura. Sample several varieties of sake, explore the Japanese Garden’s Teahouse Island, and enjoy a live taiko performance under the trees to celebrate the arrival of spring! Tickets are available for purchase though the garden; admission includes a keepsake tasting cup and five sake samples.

Sunday, April 29 we will be returning to the St. Louis Art Museum for the museum's annual Passport to Japan celebration. This free event will include origami demonstrations, traditional Japanese dance, taiko drumming, shishimai (lion dance), and other activities for the entire family. Our performance will begin at 1:30 PM in the outdoor sculpture garden. This event is presented in collaboration with the Japan America Society of St. Louis.

Song Profile: Kokoro no Koe

Written by Jaclynn Lett

Meaning “voice of the heart,” Kokoro no Koe is a quiet composition for fue and uchiwa daiko, a handheld fan drum. Differing from much of our repertoire, it is a contemplative piece, reflecting upon the accomplishments, disappointments and aspirations in our lives. Although this is a calm and quiet process, there is also the pressure of time impelling us to make the decisions that affect our future.

Written by performing member Jaclynn Lett, Kokoro no Koe is written as an interlude to be played during drum transitions; while it’s one of our shorter pieces, it is also one of the most popular downloads from our first album, Drive.

Register for Classes

Our spring session of Beginner's Taiko starts in April! The Adult Beginning Class is for those of you who want to play taiko but don't have much experience, or who can't devote 10+ hours per week to taiko. You will learn the basics of sticking, kata (form), movement, theory, and rhythms of taiko, plus some pieces you can play.

In addition to the benefits of good exercise that taiko provides, it helps improve self-awareness, rhythm, and concentration. It can also relieve stress and is a lot of fun!
