Robotic collaboration in timber construction

NCCR researchers have developed a digital timber construction method that expands the range of possibilities for traditional timber frame construction. The first load-bearing timber modules, which are prefabricated at ETH Zurich using "Spatial Timber Assemblies", will be assembled on the top two floors at the DFAB HOUSE construction site. The novel construction method evolved from a close collaboration with the Swiss construction company ERNE AG Holzbau.

NCCR researchers have been finalists in this year's euRobotics TechTransfer Awards


Kathrin Dörfler, Markus Giftthaler and Timothy Sandy, all PhD researchers at ETH Zurich, were amongst this year’s four finalists in the renowned euRobotics TechTransfer Awards for their ground-breaking work on the development of the mobile construction robot, the “In situ Fabricator”. The finals took place as part of this year’s European Robotics Forum from the 13th to the 15th March in Tampere, Finland, which brought together over 900 leading scientists, companies, and policymakers from the field of robotics.

NCCR Director Philippe Block awarded the Berlin Art Prize

 
The NCCR Digital Fabrication is pleased to share that its Director Philippe Block has been awarded the Berlin Art Prize in Architecture. Lord Norman Foster, Ian Ritchie and Patrik Schumacher formed the renowned jury that selected Philippe Block for the prize.

17 April 2018: The NCCR Digital Fabrication and the NEST team invite you to a joint equality networking event on the future of architecture 


This event on the 17th of April 2018 at the NEST building of Empa and Eawag in Dübendorf, Switzerland, is an opportunity for information, exchange and networking between leading women from industry or academia with a professional and personal interest in the future of architecture, and the role technology will have. The evening will feature brief introductions followed by research presentations of the DFAB HOUSE project and other NEST modules.

Together with the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects sia and the NCCR Digital Fabrication, the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW organises an evening debate on the digital transformation of the construction sector. What does digital fabrication mean in concrete terms? Will the houses of the future be built by robots? Which new opportunities do digital fabrication methods provide for architects?
