Greetings to all Camera Clubs,
First of all, the working behind the scenes for our annual convention has been ongoing. I have only just returned yesterday from another trip to Warrnambool to meet with the committee of the 2018 VAPS convention.
On this my second visit for convention purposes, I am pleased to report that everything is very well organized and all preparations are in hand for a very successful convention.
We had arranged to meet with the local newspaper, and they actually sent out a photographer to shoot a sequence with me, and some of the Warrnambool camera club members. They also asked if they could video a section of an interview with myself, and the President Stan McCullagh talking about the highlights of the convention. This will be on the Warrnambool Standard’s Facebook page with a link to more information on the event. The local club is keen to promote and advertise the event and they are doing a first rate job.
I met all the members of the local club that night and gave a presentation along with a talk on what to expect and their important involvement with the event.
All presenters are now booked and confirmed, the venues and other facilities, including our food, are also confirmed.
My trip over the last couple of days included a visit to a second club the very next night, and so I attended by invitation, the Stawell camera club’s 30th Anniversary dinner and presentation night.
It’s very good to see rural club’s growing in number and making a success of their artistic pursuits. Stawell Camera Club are holding an exhibition in the town hall over the next two weeks, showcasing the local talent of the members to their community. I wish them every success.
In the past couple of months the committee has been looking further at our Insurance policy: It must be stated that VAPS has a comprehensive insurance package for clubs which is much better priced than if obtained by clubs individually.
It is timely for VAPS to go to the market….IE RATHER THAN JUST RENEW for insurance later in this year in 2018 for next year 2019 and beyond…. given changing times and heightened risk in the area of social media (misuse) for example.”
VAPS will be looking for a policy that includes Management Liability as well as the benefits that we currently enjoy with our ANSVAR cover.
However cost of Management Liability (Directors and Officers cover) may not be affordable, but we will endeavour to obtain the best cover for clubs ongoing.
It is with pleasure that we have only recently welcomed a new member onto the VAPS committee, so we are delighted that Joseph Maher has not only joined but has accepted the very important role of Treasurer and with that the portfolio of Assets register. Given Joseph’s background in Accounting and other financial matters, we are very grateful for his expert advice and ongoing work to keep VAPS financial affairs in-check and legal.
Lastly, I would like to thank sincerely and with much gratitude, the generous work done by our retiring treasurer Jenny Colson over the course of many years. In 2006 Jenny became Treasurer of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies (VAPS) the state association. Jenny has held the position of VAPS Treasurer for 12 years, during that time the Societies Accounts have been managed accurately being regularly audited and reported to members.
Not only has Jenny acted in this key position for VAPS but also managed the annual convention refreshments and teas over many years and many different annual conventions. At each committee meeting Jenny has provided refreshments, teas and lunches and organised afternoon teas for club members attending AGM’s and Mid-year meetings. Jenny has always been on hand at the front desk of each annual convention to manage late bookings, hand out many receipts and pay accounts as required. No Society could ask for a more dedicated and conscientious committee member on their team. In 2010 Jenny was awarded the State distinction of SSVAPS for the work that she put into her many roles in Club and VAPS.
I continue to be very grateful to all members of the VAPS committee
And would be remiss not to mention the important hard work and dedication of our secretary Tony Harding.
Also a mention for the role that former committee member Peter Kewley continues to do in the background.

VAPS SERVICE AWARDS AND YEAR BARS
Cut Off date for Year Bars extended to 15th April and
Cut Off date for Service Awards extended to 30th April.
Now is the time for clubs to start thinking about Year Bars and Service Awards and be looking at recognising their member’s efforts where appropriate.
These are presented annually at the VAPS Awards Dinner held with the VAPS Convention.
Year Bars are important to members.
Starting at 10 years membership and available in 5 year increments, they are recognition of your member’s service and support for your club. They are $12.50 each but some clubs recycle them.
Do you have accurate records of eligible members?? If not you can see who has received what on the VAPS website. If you spot any errors there, please let the Badges and Awards officer know.
Service Awards
There are two levels of service awards that are available to club members.
Meritorious and State Service SSVAPS awards.
Again these are important levels of recognition for your members’ efforts. Criteria applies to these awards and all information can be found on the VAPS website under Documents, http://www.vaps.org.au.

APJA - Judges Association

Image Evaluation / Judging courses for anyone who would like to improve their ability to evaluate a photographic image, and for those that think they may like to take on the role of a future judge, or anyone that would just like to help fellow club members, especially novices better evaluate their images.
LEVEL 1 (Novice) Image Evaluating Training.
Sunday 15th April Level 1 Training. This is a full day event and the only Level 1 training scheduled for 2018. It will be held at Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley. This is being held in a country area with the aid of the Latrobe Valley Club to help those from South Eastern Victoria. Members from metro clubs are welcome to enrol.
Cost is: APJA members $25, Non APJA but on the VAPS Judges List $35, all others $40. This is necessary to cover hire, presenter and travelling costs.
Registrations will be from 8.30am – 9am. Main topics: Overview of image Evaluation, APJA training levels, you don’t have to become a judge, accreditation if you want it. Why have images evaluated, public speaking, judging styles, basic evaluation, technical vs aesthetic, emotion in images, evaluating images for clubs, practical exercises, Q & A. Finish time approx.4.30pm. Morning and afternoon tea provided, BYO lunch.

Announcement from Australia China Friendship Society Limited -
Cameras head to China and You’re Invited
A small group of those interested in photography at every level will leave Australia on September 18 for a 13 day visit to China.
The Australia China Friendship Society Limited have invited their member Susan Moss to lead the tour. Susan is a member of the Western Australian Camera Club which celebrated its centenary in 2017.
On most days in China the group will be joined by a local photographer well versed in nearby attractions and knowing the best times to achieve top images.
Susan worked with the Guilin tour expert to design an itinerary that would delight those on the tour. Highlights will be the Li River, golden rice prior to harvest in the rice terraces and a visit to an old Dong village. The Dong people being one of the 56 ethnic minority groups in China.
Victorian participants will fly China Southern, the world’s third largest carrier, from Melbourne direct to Guangzhou, the old Canton.
The cost is $4380 covering fares, rail and coach connections, hotel accommodation in twin rooms, most meals, and all gratuities.

Exhibitions and What's On

The 45th Warragul National Photographic Exhibition, which is run by the Warragul Camera Club, is being held in May 2018.
Entries are now open via our web site www.warragulnational.org
Entries Close on 4th April 2018. Entry numbers have been steadily increasing and to facilitate this we have a number of drop off points for prints to help with postage costs. The streamlined entry system now allows an entrant to register and keep that registration open until they are ready to submit .
At that stage payment will be available through the secure PayPal payment gateway and there will be an email notification of the final images entered. All the information is available via the web site. We look forward to receiving your entries and hope that you will encourage others to also enter this important exhibition.

Digital Salon 2018
The VIGEX 2nd International Digital Salon will be conducted in 2018, with the closing date for entries on 13 May. There will be six sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and Differences in Society. The final section is a new category to encourage innovation in photography – it will seek images that reflect on human life in the modern world. Details of the Salon will be available on the web-site shortly.
Friends of VIGEX Subscriptions 2018-19
Friends of VIGEX subscriptions are used to support each print salon and these funds are not allocated towards the more financially robust digital salons in the alternate years. This means that the next FoV subscriptions will cover the two-year period 2018-19 leading up to the VIGEX 20th Print Salon 2019.
All Friends are invited to renew their subscription now and any new Friends will be especially welcome. Membership Forms for Individual Friends or Camera Club Friends are found on the Friends page of the VIGEX web-site – complete the form electronically for email return or print and post. Subscriptions may be paid using Direct Deposit via EFT.

The 2018 VAPS Convention and Interclub exhibition will be held at Deakin University Campus in Warrnambool this year. Hosted by the Warrnambool Camera Club it promises to be a fantastic weekend full of learning and photographic opportunities.
Commencing on Friday 25th May through to Monday 28th May the convention will kick off with an official welcome cocktail party and viewing of the Interclub print exhibition on the Friday night.
The Saturday and Sunday programmes are full of excellent speakers and workshops that will have everyone engaged in informative photographic sessions along with photographic opportunities on Monday to round off a great long weekend of photography.
Headlined by renowned Arctic and Photographer of the Year, Joshua Holko, who will present two outstanding talks on his amazing Arctic Circle photography, and Glyn Lavender well known Australian and International photographic coach who will steer us through “Refining our vision among the Chaos” before embarking on a live model shoot to demonstrate the techniques of model lighting.
Denis Smith known as one of the world’s most prolific light painters will enthral with his talk and exclusive workshop on the Sunday night. This is an opportunity not to be missed, full details are in the programme and registration forms.
Local speakers and photographers have not been forgotten either with Oat Vaiyaboon aka HangingPixels will present on the latest trend in Drone photography. Another fantastic local is Elizabeth O’Callaghan local author and historian. Elizabeth with take us through the history of photography in Warrnambool and the many changes that this interesting city has experienced.
Photographic opportunities will also be high on the agenda with Ian Rolfe conducting two open landscape workshops and the Warrnambool Camera Club presenting an open Model shoot nearby for all of those who like to just get out and capture great images. Ian will also hold a photoshoot of the iconic Childers Cove on Monday morning. The finish off the weekend you will also have the opportunity to visit one of Warrnambool’s favourite attractions, Flagstaff Hill. On the Sunday night you have the option of attending the Light & Sound show, for a small additional cost. On the Monday all delegates and their families will have free entry to Flagstaff Hill. We even have people in period costume walking around the venue.
Deakin University has really great facilities for our 2018 convention, plus the Warrnambool Bowls Club will be the location for the Saturday night Awards Dinner.

GLYNN LAVENDER
Glynn is the owner and operator of Creative Photo Workshops and is well known both here in Australia and also the USA for his 30 plus years involvement in the photo industry.
Glynn’s goal is to cut through the technical jargon of photography and get to the heart of what’s important – capturing great images, his passion for teaching photography is evident everywhere he goes and every time he picks up his camera.

Oat Vaiyaboon aka hangingpixels, was born in Bangkok, Thailand. His mother had spent part of her youth attending university in Canberra and was impressed enough to send her son down under to further his education. So at 14 years old, Oat made the long journey to Sydney.
After completing year 12 in 1996, Oat went to university to study architecture. After university, he worked as a draftsman, spending the next decade adding his creative flair to the Sydney skyline.
Oat’s desire to expand his horizons meant he went back to university to obtain his masters degree in design, photography and digital media.
This re-ignited a passion for photography that had existed since high school where he chose photography as his major in Art.
Back in high school Oat still used the old film that had to be developed. He could often be found working in the dark room, processing his images and watching them come to life. Although now it is all digital and the tools are different, a lot about the process of photography for him has stayed the same.
The thing Oat loves most about photography is that he can go out and not be committed to one thing, it is about each person’s interpretation.
“It is how you see the object you are photographing. I look at things and work out when and how to use the natural light, I’m still learning now. Sometimes you go out with your camera and come back and all the shots are terrible.”
Oat’s venture from Sydney to south-west Victoria has provided him with wonderful subject matter. Images of the Grampians, the Great Ocean Road, the Otways, the high country and just about every natural wonder in and around Port Fairy have caught the attention of his camera.
Oat shares his passion for photography, both with camera in his hand or attached to a drone, on his facebook and instagram accounts and on his website.
He is a licensed drone operator, capturing spectacular shots from above.
“People are becoming more aware of what drones can do, what great shots you can get from using them.”
For Oat, taking photos is very therapeutic. He travels around, sometimes with his family or friends, sometimes in solitude, and takes photos.

The Cavendish Red Gum Festival 13th & 14th April 2018
"A community initiative celebrating the magnificent red gum country of Cavendish and surrounds. The event will include activities for everyone; young, old and families- kicking off with the official launch, our Red Gum Festival Opening Gala. Other highlights will be the“ Red Gum Run (or Ramble)” a 4.5km run/walk along the majestic Wannon River and an environmental symposium with guest speakers and displays.
We invite sculptors, artists and photographers of all ages to celebrate our red gums by entering works in various exhibitions and competitions.

Portrait Group Master Classes at The Melbourne Camera Club
10 photographers, 2 professional models, make-up artists and 3 hours of photography in The Melbourne Camera Club studios. If you are into portrait shooting then this is for you.
With a maximum of 5 shooters per group you will not only get plenty of shooting time but plenty of help from our experienced instructors in all aspects of portrait photography (or we can stay out of your way if you prefer).
Our models will wear a variety of outfits, and there will be ample opportunity to learn some new lighting set ups.
Suitable for experienced and novice portrait shooters.
Cost is $90 for Melbourne Camera Club members, and $130 for non-members.

· Prints must be mounted on board/card no larger than 40 by 50cm & must include a backing board.
· Backs of entries must be clearly contain - entrants name, photo title, section, category and an arrow or the word TOP to indicate top of photo.
· If attending, entrants are to remove their own prints and take away after presentation but, please let Secretary know prior to leaving venue.
· Postage/ cash must accompany prints needing return post, only.
· After the show prints will only be held at drop off points for two (2) weeks, they will be destroyed unless other arrangements have been made.
· NO photo winning a 1st in any section or category can be re-entered in the Lismore Photo Show.
· IF ACCEPTED - names of late entries may not appear in the Photo Show listing.
· The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
· Western Plains Photography Club have the right to refuse acceptance of any entry without reason.
Submission of entries to this Photography Show implies acceptance of Condition of entry.

You do not need to be an active judge to be a member.
The prime objective of the Association is to help develop the evaluation and judging skills of members.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
