Where in the World are Our Listeners?

This week we're giving a shout out to Mumbai, India. Founded more than 3,000 years ago on an archipelago of seven islands the city gradually reclaimed land until the area became a unified headland. Mumbai is India's most important port accounting for 70% of all maritime trade in the country. The city is also the home to Bollywood. This Hindi-language film industry sells an estimated 3.6 billion tickets annually around the world (Hollywood sells 2.6 billion tickets) making it one of the most important centers of film production in the world.

Tip of the week - Check a charging map

Ready to buy an electric car but worried about running out of juice on the road? Check a charging map of your area. The number one reason people hesitate to buy an electric car is 'range anxiety'. Most modern electric cars have a 150-200 mile range between charges which is fine for everyday use but can require some planning for longer trips. You can search for charging maps to get a sense of how common charging stations are near you. Here are a few examples for listeners in the United States, Canada, Ireland & the UK.

Look clever at a cocktail party

While electric cars are often touted for their environmental friendliness and low running costs, a lesser known fact is that they are fast. The highest recorded acceleration for an electric car is 0-100kph in 1.5 seconds. The fastest internal combustion engine car can do it in 2.2 seconds.

What are Ian, Darren & March up to this week?

  • Ian has been enjoying his Tesla Model 3 so much he made a video of it!
  • Darren is sampling a variety of single origin artisan chocolates from bean-to-bar chocolate makers.
  • March is training to climb the volcano Mt. St. Helens at the end of April.
Listen to an upcoming show to hear how our experiments went and what we learned!

Article of the week

How Tesla Will Change the World - by Tim Urban

"From what I’ve seen, read, and talked about, it really seems like Tesla is going to fulfill its mission and change the world. It’s going to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport by bringing compelling mass market electric cars to market as soon as possible. If the Model 3 ends up being as great as they say it’s gonna be, there’s no doubt in my mind that electric cars will be the norm far earlier than they would have been.

Which will, in turn, mean that 50 years from now, the atmosphere’s CO2 level will probably be lower than it would have otherwise been, cities will be less smoggy than they would have otherwise been, global temperatures will be lower than they would have otherwise been, the sad polar bear will get to eat seals again, along with about 12 other positive effects that will legitimately affect our lives. "

Tesla Model 3 (review by Consumer Reports)

While Ian is loving his Model 3 we wanted to provide an independent review of the car, so we looked to Consumer Report's first impressions:

"As our Model 3 reaches 2,000 break-in miles and heads into our formal testing phase, we’re struck by how enjoyable this car is to drive. But we’re on the fence about its 15-inch touch screen. Time—and further testing—will tell if this consolidated control center and display is the way of the future or just a distracting gimmick."
