Vivi Lachs, Rachel Weston and Steve Ogin are pleased to announce the opening of the “Yiddish Open Mic Café”. The first Yiddish Open Mic Café will be dedicated to the memory of a major champion of Yiddish as a living language: our beloved teacher, Yiddishist, actor and friend, Barry Davis. A picture of Barry performing is in the group photo on the Facebook page (“ Yiddish Open Mic Café”).
The details are:
Date: Saturday 21st April
Time: 2pm – 5pm
Venue: The Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, London WC2H 9BX.
Cost: A minimal donation on the door to cover expenses (essentially room hire).
To put your name down in advance for an Open Mic contribution (individuals or groups are welcome to give contributions of up to 8 minutes), please visit the Facebook page: here
Acoustic musical accompaniment is welcome.
The Yiddish Open Mic Café offers a space where Yiddish speakers, teachers, students, scholars and anyone with an interest in Yiddish can be sociable and entertained in a receptive, warm, friendly, and mainly Yiddish language environment. The Café will be inclusive of all levels of Yiddish from native speakers to not quite beginners, with Yiddish conversation encouraged; Yiddish will be the language for the Open Mic (feel free to translate for your neighbour if they’re not understanding something). No-one is going to be marking your Yiddish grammar!
