GOL! Adventure Days
We wrapped up our 2017-2018 Adventure Days on March 30th with more skiing fun at Ski Cooper and some really cool activities with Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) & GARNA up at CMC! CAIC taught avy awareness, beacon/probe technique (all buried stuffed animals were rescued!), and mountain patrol scenarios while GARNA shared winter ecology lessons and made gourmet roasted banana smores. Plus, a group helped get the C4 greenhouse prepped for spring planting. So much fun!
GOL!-LCSD
Lake County Intermediate School 3rd Graders journeyed to Ski Cooper on Friday, March 2nd to honor the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division while joining them in their annual “Serpentine Ski Down” ceremony. This was an amazing way for students to close out their Learning Expedition about WWII and 10th Mountain Division history. What a fun celebration of learning – full of ski lessons, pizza wedges, and smiles on the slopes! Huge thanks to the 10th Mountain Division, community chaperones Bob Hartzell, Chad Helmke, Kendra Kurihara, Greg Labbe, Eric Wanless, and Lake County School District teachers and staff, and others who made this possible. Thanks also to Ski Cooper and Great Outdoors Colorado for making this important outdoor learning opportunity possible for LCSD students.
 
C4 continues to visit Michelle Cavanaugh’s environmental science class. Before spring break, Kendra Kurihara, C4’s executive director, engaged the students in discussions on waste systems in our community, how to conduct a waste audit and why, and the positive impact of composting in reducing greenhouse gases. Cameron Millard, C4’s Energy Programs Director, taught students about solving energy efficiency problems using the laws of thermodynamics and basic applied science and math. The content also connected energy savings at home with local and global sustainability issues.
Community Gear Library
On March 7th, community members gathered at CMC to discuss the layouts that Architectural Workshop put together for a GOL! Hub and Gear Library extension off of the Climax Building. During two community listening sessions and a separate meeting with all CMC-Leadville faculty and staff, we gained wisdom from community members about the “flow” of programming and gear issuing, parking and vehicle access, awesome and not-so-awesome gear storage schemes, and the “feel” people hope the Hub and Gear Library will have. It’s amazing that in just one day in Leadville you can gather together people who have managed gear libraries at half-a-dozen different facilities - the brain power was impressive!
