Enlarging and deepening the ICSEM project through the EMPOWER-SE COST Action

The first scientific meeting of the EMPOWER-SE COST Action was held in Lisbon last February 28th and March 1st. It focused on the Working Group (WG) aiming to work on theoretical foundations of social enterprise (“Foundations”). As you can see above, we were more than 50 researchers coming from over 35 countries, which created a unique discussion around the first group of countries included in the ICSEM Project carried out by EMES since 2013 and a new batch of countries who joined thanks to the new COST Action.

The goals of the meeting were: 1) to create synergies between WG1 of the EMPOWER-SE COST Action and the ICSEM Project; 2) to promote international transversal and comparative analyses of social enterprise models across countries and fields; and 3) to deepen and enlarge the research perimeter to countries which were not covered so far by ICSEM.

In addition, we held the first "stakeholders talk" within the EMPOWER-SE Action with five representatives from key organizations from the Portuguese social enterprise eco-system. Lastly, the Management Committee of EMPOWER-SE also held it second meeting during the second day.

Although the work to be carried out by the members of this WG1 will take several months, there will be some concrete outputs from this pioneering Lisbon meeting. To stay tuned on EMPOWER-SE, please sign up for the distribution list on the home page of the website www.empowerse.eu.

Visit the revamped blog of the EMES PhD community!

As you know, the EMES Junior Experts Blog (EJEB) aims to feature the ongoing work of PhD students and early-stage researchers who are EMES members. The idea of the EJEB originated from the PhD Summer Schools organized by EMES: PhDs and recent graduates felt the need to have a space to share their research and reflections. In this context, posts aim to give voice to the work of PhD students around topics related to social enterprise, social and solidarity economy and social innovation as well as their testimonies on this unique journey.

After Eduardo Pereira, PhD candidate at Catholic University of Lille (France), took over the coordination of the blog, he has led an wonderful format update of the EJEB which has brought up a fresher look allowing to have a view of several entries at once while including more images on the landing page.

The last three posts include a personal account by Lauren Jankelowitz of her own personal experience as a PhD; a description of the RurAction project by Mara van TwuijverLucas Olmedo, and Barrai Hennerbry; and a summary of Merie Joseph Kannampuzha's thesis on social impact and measurement.

Thanks to Eduardo and the rest of PhDs and early-career investigators for their commitment to this important communication channel!
