All three WBB Final Four games were absolute thrillers, capped by an incredible game-winner from Notre Dame yesterday evening in Columbus. Here's the video. (link); Fighting Irish HC McGraw in her post-game presser, "Phenomenal for women's basketball. Three exciting games. I hope the ratings reflect it. But the crowd was tremendous tonight. Everybody came back. Just an incredible job by Columbus and the local community. Great support for women's basketball and definitely one of the best Final Fours since 2001, right? (Laughter). […] I think we've established a great culture. I think starting in 2011, when we were able to get back to the Final Four for the first time in ten years, and I think the culture just perpetuates itself, starting with the seniors and how they address the team, how they indoctrinate the freshmen into our culture, and the work ethic. I think that's what really separates the good teams." (link); Mississippi State's Schaefer: "This is the toughest, most resilient team I've ever seen. Their competitive fire and competitive spirit is second to none. Again, congratulations to Notre Dame, but I'm awfully proud of this group. […] We've got great kids coming in. I've still got great kids in that locker room. But the integrity and the character of this group is something I've not seen. I'm so proud of them. I'm proud to be their coach. I'm proud of their fight. They're going to be so successful in life because of their grit, their determination, and how they embrace the grind of life as well as the grind of basketball." (link)
The latest from Yahoo's Thamel on expectations of what the Rice Commission will recommend in response to MBB-FBI developments. SEC Commish Sankey: "I think the expectation has been set that this will be different. Now the question is what the output is going to be." Thamel indicates Commission chair & former Secretary of State Rice initially had interest in a model similar to baseball's, but the NBA & NBAPA were clearly not in support. NBA Commish Silver says Rice "has deeply immersed herself in the subject" & former Big East boss Tranghese adds from his time with Rice on the College Football Playoff committee, "If anyone can cut through it, it’s her. She’s tough, you aren’t going to bulldoze her. She’s dealt with issues that are so far over this issue she’s not going to get overwhelmed by it." Ohio State AD Smith also added thoughts, "I don’t think it’s just this committee. Everyone can’t put everything on this committee, that it’s going to be the savior of a culture that’s developed for four or five decades. The reality is we’re not going to come up with the recommendations that are going to eliminate the problems. They are recommendations to mitigate the issues and help. But it’s going to take a collaborative effort, and not just within the NCAA. We’re going to need many entities to eliminate the bad actors." More. (link)
More from Mountain West Commish Thompson on the possibility of Gonzaga joining his ranks, "It depends on who you talk to -- president [Thayne] McCulloh, AD [Mike] Roth, Coach Mark Few. Right now I think it's going to be probably it won't happen in April 2018. But that doesn't mean [ever]. […] It's about eight minutes to go in the Michigan game and my phone is blowing up. I'm going, 'Come on people.'" CBSSports.com's Dodd indicates the decision is "assumed to be largely up to Few." (link)
The Tennessee-Currie situation continues to generate press, this time as UT Chancellor Davenport discusses her first year in Knoxville. Davenport: "My biggest regret is that in the midst of everything that happened, all the good work we’ve done at this university was lost in the shuffle. Not the work itself, but the Vol nation’s attention was thwarted and focused on that. [...] People make mistakes. They just simply do. We had search consultants. We had a group of people who worked very hard, and that simply happens. I’ve owned it. We’ve discussed it. We’ve investigated it. We released 6,000 pages of documents. Everybody can follow every step of the way. We’ve moved on and we’re in a good place." (link)
As assistant coaching salaries continue to rise across the FB landscape, Colorado and Colorado State are able to offer an alternative that many programs cannot. Thanks to a state law passed last year, "self-funded auxiliaries," including university athletic programs, are exempt from statutes that restrict multi-year contracts. Consequently, CU and CSU can keep pace with programs that pay ACs more annually. CU AD George: "It really puts us at the same competitive level that our peers are at. I think it's great that we can show our commitment to coaches for a longer period of time." Currently, nine of CU's 10 FB ACs are on multi-year contracts, with DC Eliot and co-OCs Chiaverini and Adams working under three-year deals. Meanwhile, without the resources of a Power 5 school, CSU plans to offer two-year contracts to DC Jancek and OC Johnson this season. CSU AD Parker: "For [George] and in their space within the Power 5, it's more of a competitive issue. It's probably a little less so for us, but I like to know that we have the flexibility if we move that direction in the future." (link)
Watch: UNC Asheville AD Cone & Longwood peer Austin chat with Boston U. Deputy AD Satter about the value & necessity of ADs having solid working relationships with their President or Chancellor. Cone: "Trust, accountability, and transparency in the relationship with the president. […] It’s our job to be adaptive to their style, not the other way around." Austin: "Learn the timing and understand the rhythm of your president. [...] Understanding the communication style of your president will create great alignment." Lots more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The outcome of Saturday night's MBB Final Four matchup with Villanova didn't work out how Kansas would have preferred, but it did see Jayhawks student-athlete Azubuike reunited with his mother, Florence, after six years apart. Florence arrived from Nigeria a bit past midnight on Saturday & KU HC Self remarked, "That was a proud moment for all of us. Certainly it doesn’t seem near as proud — it’s not the fairy-tale moment if we would have won the game — but it’s a really special moment for those two." Kansas Congressman Yoder aided the process by helping Florence to obtain a travel visa in a mere 48 hours. (link)

At a public hearing with the Arizona Board of Regents last week, a handful of Northern Arizona students spoke in favor of the proposed $75/semester student athletics fee. The Associated Students of Northern Arizona voted 10 to 1 in favor of the fee, but it needs approval by the ABOR on April 5 in order to go into effect. AD Marlow expects the fee to generate $3.1M for the Lumberjacks, increasing his department's annual budget by 17%. An existing student activity fee of $48/semester covers, among other things, free sports tickets for students. (link)
Marshall SVP for Marketing & Communications Painter on the value of MBB's run in the NCAA Tourney, "Not to be flippant, but unless we had someone here cure cancer, I couldn't come up with my wildest imagination what could get us the coverage we enjoyed over those eight days." Director of Admissions Johnson believes the university will see an uptick in applications over the next two or three years & Painter says MU generated $75M worth of earned media during Madness compared to $300K in a normal week. Good timing as Prez Gilbert is pushing to increase enrollment to 15K by 2021. (link)
MBB Final Four TV ratings were down a touch year over year as an average of 13.4M viewers watched across a number of platforms on Saturday night. Last year's games drew 16.8M, however it's a bit apples to oranges as the 2017 games were on the terrestrial CBS versus cable outlets for this year's tips. Comparing to two years ago, when the 2016 matchups were on also cable, Saturday night's numbers were reportedly up. (link)
Michigan MBB HC Beilein could be in line for a raise, according to AD Manuel, who said after Saturday's semifinal win: "This is not my first rodeo. I have to make sure I get a chance to look at that [contract] and know some of the details I need to know, if you will, but I'm very happy for him." Manuel also applauded the way Beilein carries himself, especially during a time when MBB is beset by a climate of scandal. "It's a reflection of him, and for me and for the President and the Board of Regents...if he won his first this year, it would make us even more proud." (link); Meanwhile, Manuel won't just be focused on Beilein this offseason, asserting that he would like to keep the entire staff together. "When you have success like this, people start coming after your assistants. ... So I have to sharpen my pencil. That's fine. That's what the president and the board pay me to do, is think about these things." Manuel adds that he's broached the topic of an extension for Beilein, but "we haven't put a time frame on it." (link)
Texas Tech Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations & Strategic Communications Giovannetti indicates MBB's season of success resulted in a $400K new revenue increase. One key metric was home attendance being up by 13%. These are two interesting data points in a piece from the Texas Tribune's Levitt on some MBB finances around the state. Also of note is a recruiting budget increase at Texas of 380% from 2014-15 to 2016-17. (link)
According to USA Today's Joseph, the 3X3U National Championship was the "anti-NCAA event in every sense." After each quarterfinal round yesterday, production staff members tossed a bag of fake money on the court, a nod to The Ringer's Titus' "Bag Guy" joke about impermissible benefits that VP of Sports Properties Russell knew would have a "wittiness" impact. The Big Ten won the title with former student-athletes from Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana and Minnesota taking home the (real) cash prize of $50K. Indiana's Johnson: "I was loving the vibe, I was loving the energy, to be honest. I feel like I got a portion back of what we worked for. The time and effort that we put in. You can’t really replace that with money, but to be able to play for it — it was fun." (link)
More coverage on new(ish) Arkansas AD Yurachek as he continues to acclimate to his new state. Yurachek on continuing the Hogs annual game in Little Rock: "What I’ve come to find in my first 100-plus days here a decision to or not to play in Little Rock is not a financial decision. It means a lot to people across the state because of the central location of Little Rock and the rich history for 70 consecutive years of games being played there. I can’t tell you the number of people I’ve met who have said things like, 'My wife and I had our first date at a game in Little Rock' or 'my dad first took me to a game in Little Rock.' Just story after story. It’s not a dollars and cents decision. That’s a factor in the decision, but it cannot be the only factor in the decision." Calls the budget model "perfect" for the Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium renovation project, which will "finish on time and on budget." A track ops building is also on the facilities horizon, potentially ready by the 2020 outdoor season. (link)
Last year, as part of a $31K settlement agreement with Washington State, former Assoc. AD for Compliance Lucier agreed to never apply or accept a position at WSU again after he resigned for using "inappropriate and offensive language" in the workplace. The settlement document, in part: "By entering into the AGREEMENT, neither party admits any violation of any duty, contract, order, rule or law. The negotiation of this agreement shall not be admissible in any proceeding as to any kind of acknowledgment or admission of such a violation, wrongdoing or negligence." (link)
After a four-year absence from spring practice due to NCAA sanctions, Southern FB is back on the field prior to fall camp, and HC Odums expects the result to be tangible once the season starts. "Without having spring ball, you can’t really find out about those guys until August. It makes it a long transition. Now that we have (spring ball), we’re able to find out about them in the spring, so hopefully we can set the depth chart a little better and know what we’ve got with all these young guys." Southern was placed on probation for providing data that made it impossible to verify APR scores in various sports, and AD Banks announced last May that the FB team would be allowed to hold spring practice again after posting a single-season APR of 930 in 2015-16. Southern will hold two scrimmages this month, and Odums says the hitting in between will be "controlled," adding: "It'll be good to just be on the field for 15 practices and really get good at what we're trying to get good at." (link)
The Washington Post's Root sums up the last four years for Adidas: "Adidas has cause to celebrate. Since King took over in 2014, the company has more than doubled its North American market share, and its stock has nearly quadrupled globally. Even a pay-to-play college basketball scandal, which could send one of the company's former executives to prison, has done little to slow Adidas' momentum." Per the company's 2017 annual report released last month, North American revenue grew 27%, compared to a 3% growth from rival Nike. The switch from a European focus to an American one is part of the story, as is the hiring of North American Prez King and the introduction of the Boost midsole technology. Adidas' U.S. market share is up to 11%, but still lags behind Nike's 37%. More. (link)
OregonLive reports that Nike has signed deals to provide gear for 93% of Oregon's large public high schools at a cost of roughly $1M per year. The agreements provide each public school with at least $15K per gear annually and offer discounts of 40-45% for additional purchases -- none of which accounts for the free shoes, bags, and warm-ups it gives to star players on sponsored teams, whether district administrators are aware of it or not. Oregon Warsaw Sports Marketing Center Academic Director Cornwell says penetrating the high school market was the next logical step in attempting to engender brand loyalty, especially since high school athletes embrace the idea of wearing big-name brands. "It does make them feel like they're really part of a team. Like the teams they see on TV." Just five large public high schools in the state now are without a deal with a single apparel provider. (link)
Also Noticed: Loyola-Chicago's Sister Jean faced criticism Saturday night for leaving her seat a few minutes before the end of the game. Turns out she did so to get in position by the tunnel to greet the players as they left the court, "Just as she has for every other game, win or lose" per Asst. AD for Communications Behrns. (link); From Law360: "In several high-profile college basketball coaching changes this year, schools have sought to justify the termination as 'for cause' to avoid or limit multimillion-dollar contract buyouts, evidence of a trend that experts say should have coaches and their attorneys more carefully scrutinizing contracts moving forward...." Organizational behavior professors Tasselli, Kilduff & Landis provide solutions for employees who need to up their conscientiousness game. Thesis, via Harvard Business Review, "Importantly, showing your willingness to become conscientious may be just as important as actually doing it. From an organizational perspective, leaders should evaluate their employees not only on their current behavior and performance but also on how adaptable those employees are. Even if you will never become the kind of super-detail-oriented person who lives for color-coded spreadsheets, you will get a lot of credit for improving — even a little — if you show you are trying hard to do so."
