DFEL NEWSLETTER APRIL/MAY 2018

“We all had talents before dementia, we don’t suddenly lose all those talents overnight when we get a diagnosis. It’s often a case of finding new ways to use those talents.” Wendy Mitchell,  Author : ‘Somebody I Used to Know’.

Wendy Mitchell was diagnosed with dementia at 58. She had to give up her career in the NHS, cooking, driving and running.  Wendy explains how dementia is different to normal forgetting, for her it's like a fog in her head.  Dementia wasn't the end of Wendy's story - amongst other things, she's written a book, been gliding for the first time and is an Ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society. Life with dementia is not easy, Wendy has to continually adapt, try things out and live with losing memories and the ability to do things she's taken for granted.

We humans are remarkable at adapting to what life throws at us. People with dementia and carers value practical information and opportunities to share ideas and experiences with others who know just what life with dementia can be like.   Our Friendship Groups and work with the Memory Skills Team helps people with dementia and care-partners meet and build friendships with people 'in the same boat'.  Our activities and events provide opportunities for fun, friendship and finding new talents and skills, it's never too late to surprise ourselves!
