Dear Friends,

As we look forward to celebrating our 5th anniversary on April 21st the one word we keep coming back to is grateful. The support of our community, both near and far, has made our little knitting store the wonderful place it is today.  The fact is, we could not do it without all of you. We love opening our doors each day to welcome our wonderful community into our knitting home.

As a thank you to all of our customers, if you make a purchase of $25.00 or more  at Monarch between April 1st and the 21st you will receive a token of our appreciation with each purchase.  You will also be entered into a drawing for some yummy kits, a notions bag filled with goodies as well as few surprises.  On Saturday the 21st we will have a birthday party, celebrate "Local Yarn Store Day", and will draw for the 5 grand prizes at the end of the day.

 Projects of the Month...
Through the Years

We thought it would be fun to take a look back over the last five years at our featured monthly projects.  There are so many good ones!  But we've narrowed down our absolute favorites...

2013 was the year we fell smitten with the Turkish Bed Socks.  Featured in July of that year, it is still a favorite in the shop!  The pattern, from our friends at Churchmouse, is so well written and easy to follow.  We love knitting ours in Misti Alpaca's Pima Silk, but any fingering-weight yarn would be equally as fun. A pair of these always makes for a great gift, too!

A timeless piece, the Guernsey Wrap by Jared Flood was one of our featured projects in 2014.  Originally knit Brooklyn Tweed's Shelter, their worsted-weight yarn, it has since been updated in their DK-weight yarn, Arbor.  We just couldn't resist knitting up another sample - the stitch definition and feel of Arbor is remarkable!  To celebrate, we've chosen to kit up five colors of lovely Arbor.  This is a piece you will reach for time and time again.
Guernsey Wrap Kit

Ann's daughter Emma rarely asks for any hand knits, but back in 2015 she fell in love with the Bianca Wrap.  The yarn she originally used has been discontinued, so we have updated the piece by knitting it in Woolfolk Far.  And we're so glad we did!  The wrap is just so soft in this yarn - the result is the most luscious poncho you will ever wear.  An easy knit, this striped piece is rectangular in shape, then seamed at two sides to create a stylish poncho.
Bianca Wrap Kit

2016 was the year we were all knitting Melanie Berg shawls. Her lovely Spark of Grey pattern is still one of Ann's most beloved projects.  We can see why too, it's a beauty!  Its two-color slipped stitch pattern is such an interesting knit, that you won't want to put it down.  We knit ours in luscious Shibui Staccato, a silk and merino blend that just sparks as this shawl!  Now, which color kit should we knit with next?
Spark of Grey Kit

Hands down, Bibbe has become our most popular sweater in the store!  Knitted last Fall, this oversized sweater is the perfect addition to any wardrobe - it looks so great on everyone who tries it!  Meghan Kelly has designed a relatively easy knit with its relaxed fit and shaping.  Bibbe calls for The Fibre Co.'s Arranmore Light, a lofty donegal tweed of merino, silk and cashmere goat.  While we knit ours in classic black, this scrumptious yarn comes in tons of colors.
Arranmore Light (S/M - 4 skeins, L/XL - 5 skeins)
2018 Nuance

The perfect way to start out our fifth year is with a lovely pattern from our friend Anne Ginger.  Nuance is all about texture. The elegant lace texture pattern is set in a field of garter stitch and the Crave Yarns Caravan highlights it beautifully. This yarn is a stunning blend of superwash merino, cashmere, camel and mulberry silk. The incredible drape of the yarn allows for many wearing options. Knit Nuance and wrap yourself in luxury.

Pattern: Nuance by Anne Ginger
Yardage: 1,026 yards
Needle Size: US 5 (3.75 mm)
Recommended Yarns:  Nuance Kits

Lykke Needles
We're so thrilled to bring another needle option to our shop!  Taking its name from the Norwegian word for happiness, LYKKE Crafts uses high quality materials and thoughtful design to produce beautiful and durable, birch wood needles.  We have their fixed circulars, interchangeable separates (tips and cords) as well as their interchangeable sets.  Koryn is already knitting with them and says that they are wonderful!
Bee Bins
When Elizabeth Doherty of Blue Bee Studios debuted these bags at Stitches West, we loved them at first sight!  These darling bags are handmade with a high quality cotton, making them sturdy enough to stand up on their own.  Perfect to keep your knitting in place as you sit and knit!  The wide opening becomes easily cinched with the handles that fit so nicely around your wrist.   We've showcased the smaller size and are excited to be receiving the larger size soon!
Bee Bin
Big Bee Bin
Regatta
Great for spring and summer knitting, Regatta from Berroco Yarns is a 100% cotton that holds a unique construction.  Considered a tape yarn, this bulky yarn features a diagonal stripe print that creates a clever patterning in the finished fabric.  Koryn knitted a cute little shrug using just three balls of this fun yarn.  We can see ourselves wearing this on a summer vacation...

Interpretations Vol. 5
Joji Locatelli and Veera Välimäki have done it again with their latest collaborative release of Interpretations.  Celebrating five years, Volume 5 is filled with 12 garment and accessory knitting patterns that are designs inspired by six words, showing a personal take on each of these themes.  We're particularly found of Joji's Dynamic Trio, a striped shawl that looks like it would be so much fun to knit up!
Intrepretations Vol. 5
Twig & Horn All Purpose Carrying Case
These trifold canvas cases are just the thing we've been looking for to keep all of our essential knitting accoutrements. Convenient and compact, it has pockets in a wide range of sizes to hold double-pointed needles, interchangeable cords, pens, cable needles, sticky notes, and more.  There's even a snug little angled pocket that's perfect for scissors. We love how easily these stylishly slim cases fold up!

Magpie Fibers  Solo
You may be sensing a theme here lately... yep!  We are just loving Magpie Fibers!  And when Dami introduced her latest base, Solo, we put an order in that same day.  This lofty single-ply yarn is comprised of 100% merino wool, then spun into a fingering-weight.  Coming in a palette of solids and speckles of their signature richly dyed hues, it is perfect for shawls, sweaters, and more.  Like the beautiful Baubles shawl by Andrea Mowry, pictured here.  We'll have this lovely yarn in the shop soon - we cannot wait!
Staff Inspirations...
All of us at Monarch spend a lot of time culling through Ravelry, Facebook and Instagram for inspiration.  We thought it would be fun for each of us to share what has caught our eye in the last month and moved into our Ravelry queues.

Ann:  Goodness gracious, did this shawl catch my eye this month! Everything about Dohne by Bretha Mensen looks luxurious. Easy garter stitch melts into a stunning lace panel that looks like a cable and the whole thing is encircled in I-cord edge, one of my favorite finishes.  I plan to pick up some Magpie Swanky DK to cast this on.

Koryn:  I'm currently obsessed with Caitlin Hunter's designs.  After looking at her ravelry page, I found so many good ones!  I've added her newest one, the Tecumseh pullover to my queue.  I love the oversized style and the bold graphic color-work pattern looks like it would be so much fun to knit!  I'd love to knit this out of The Fibre Co.'s Arranmore Light.

Diane:  I am just having so much fun lately with crochet!  I'm currently working on the Frida's Flower Blanket by Jane Crowfoot and it is addicting!  I am crocheting this up in wonderful Tahki Cotton Classic yarn, since we have a ton of colors.  This is the perfect project for Spring.

Jana:  I recently celebrated my birthday so as a little treat I picked up a couple of new patterns.  I became enamored with the Eckstein sweater by Claudia Eisenkolb and added it to my queue!  I love the grid texture of reverse stockinette and its cozy looking fit.  And you all know my yarn of choice for this sweater is the wonderful Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock!

Jenn: While at Stitches West this year, I was able to browse through Elizabeth Doherty's booth and try on a few sweaters.  I fell in love with Clio - a drop shoulder piece that has a beautiful textured pattern.  I haven't been able stop thinking about it, so I've decided to make it my next project!  I'll be using Shibui's Cima & Staccato in their Bordeaux color. Would anyone like to do a knit-along with me?

Heather:  How cute is my favorite this month?!  These Bunny Got Back Socks by Amy Gunderson just made me giggle! These look like they would be so fun to knit - perfect for traveling, too! I'm all about socks lately, so I'm stocked up on Hedgehog Fibre sock minis.  I can't wait until we get more of them in the shop!

Alyssa:  The weather along the coast has been so lovely lately that is has got me dreaming about summer knits.  I'd love to cast-on Azalea by Pam Allen with Quince & Co.'s Sparrow yarn, perfect for this project!  Should I go bright or neutral?
