Music Article
Music theory is knowing the language of music. Music theory is beneficial to students because it helps them understand how a piece of music is suppose to sound. Having an understanding of music theory also helps to understand how music works. It has been proven to help students write and perform music accurately, to be able to critically listen to music, to be able to sight read well. Having an understanding of music theory which consists of intervals, scales, and keys will help students see why notes are placed together. Learning music theory will help a student become a well-rounded musicians, and makes it possible for them to progress more successfully in music.

1. What instruments do you play?
I sing, I play piano and flute.

2. What age did you start playing?
I started singing when I was four years old.

3. What do you enjoy most about being a music instructor?
When the students make progress, I feel very happy and proud of them.

4. How do you inspire students to practice more?
I inspire them by encouraging them based on their progress and breaking down their big goals into a few small goals.

5. What is your favorite type of music?
My favorite kind of music is Jazz, Pop, and R&B.

6. If you could give a quick tip for musicians, what would it be?
Practice EVERY DAY. Practicing even just 15 mins a day is still so much better then practicing 2 hours the day before the lesson. Let it become a part of your daily life just like eating.

7. What's been your favorite performance experience?
I love the "Shanghai Memories 1930-1940" concert; I did at Flushing Town Hall. It reminded me home and it touched me when all the audience were singing the classic Shanghai songs together with me.

8. What was one of your biggest challenges while learning to play?
At first I got nervous when I was performing, it was hard to overcome.

9. What advice would you give to students who are new to an instrument?
Expect difficulties because practicing could be not fun sometimes, but you'll be so proud of yourself when you are able to play the songs you love.

10. What advice would you give to vocal students?
It's very helpful for singers to truly understand what the lyrics mean. That's gonna change the way you sing songs. Singing is not just about skills, it's about communicating with people.
