Walking in the French Alps
We have walking holidays in some stunning regions of the French Alps and as we do every year, we have added more to our list, including the Tour of the Ubaye. Let me introduce you to these breathtaking walking locations.
Queyras
The Queyras Regional Park has a range of accessible mountain passes and summits linked by good trails which make this unspoiled region a paradise for walkers wishing to have a real high alpine experience. Its location means it enjoys a wonderful climate with 300 days of sunshine a year.
Vanoise
The Vanoise offers an ideal natural, unspoilt wilderness for walking where souring alpine peaks with pristine glaciers rise majestically above wild, remote valleys. The Vanoise National Park is an ideal destination for discovering the amazing beauty and diversity of the Alps. A rich flora and fauna, beautiful peaks, stunning glaciers and some dramatic walks are all found in this corner of the Alps
Ecrins
The Ecrins has some of the most spectacular scenery in the French Alps with high, jagged peaks. Your self guided alpine walking holiday is called a panoramic trail because it is often on the opposite side of the valley from the main summits allowing you to have wonderful views of the Ecrins Mountains.
Vercors
The Vercors is a magical place where gleaming vertical cliffs meet wild and desolate plateaux. This region forms part of the pre-Alps, a discontinuous chain of limestone peaks that run up the western side of the French Alps. Natural wonders abound in this often overlooked corner of the Alps with a rich flora and fauna.
Mercantour
The Mercantour region is the last mountain range of the Alps before it plunges directly into the Mediterranean Sea. The proximity to the south coast, gives these alpine mountains a Mediterranean touch with a large diversity of wildlife including ibex, marmots and a large number of wild flowers.
Traverse of the French Alps: GR5 Trail
Our Alpine Adventure follows the GR 5 long-distance trail from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean coast at Nice, following the entire length of the French Alps. We have split the walk into several self-guided walking holidays, although it would be possible to combine them together.
