POLY welcomes Japan's masterful techno artists DJ YAZI and Haruka

We are very excited to have DJ YAZI and Haruka, two of the most active and trusted DJs from Japan joining our roster. DJ YAZI comes from an unusual experimental hip hop background, and Haruka holds residency at DJ Nobu's famed Future Terror party. Occasionally they join forces to play hybrid B2B sets as Twin Peaks as featured on their recent Dekmantel Podcast. With first-rate skills that have been developed over decades of almost weekly performances, YAZI and Haruka are two of the most diverse and committed artists around - please get to know more about them below!

DJ YAZI (Black Smoker Records)

DJ YAZI has been active since the mid-1990s, as a member of Tokyo’s notoriously avant-garde hip hop group called Think Tank. The record label Black Smoker Records "one of Tokyo’s most indispensable and cutting-edge collectives" (Red Bull) founded by the group took their experimentalism to a series of club nights called El Nino. DJ YAZI remains their resident for two decades, drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the intensity of dub and jazz, the ferocity of techno and the euphoria of house. As a DJ he moves fluidly across styles, with his sets connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves. His attention to detail, precision and masterful control over the decks clearly show his long time involvement in this art form.

DJ YAZI currently hosts a regular techno/industrial night Konvektion at Contact, Tokyo together with Takaaki Itoh. After appearing at New Assembly, Tokyo, a satellite event series presented by Berlin Atonal in early 2017, he caught the attention of the festival directors, and made his European debut in Berlin playing Berlin Atonal and Herrensauna at Tresor.

Haruka (Future Terror)

In recent years Haruka has established himself at the forefront of Japan’s next generation of techno DJs. Since moving to Tokyo he honed his skills as a DJ through becoming a resident DJ and co-organizer of DJ Nobu’s infamous Future Terror parties.

Haruka has distinguished himself through his versatility as a DJ, with the ability to play carefully crafted opening sets, driving and powerful techno in peak time slots, as well as after hours sessions or more experimental explorations. These skills have also been displayed on mixes for the Juno Plus and Clubberia podcast series, and most recently a very well received Resident Advisor podcast showcasing "
Psychedelic techno from Tokyo's rising star".

Whilst expanding his reach outside of Japan to other Asian countries, 2017 also saw his advancement through the European scene at London’s Oval Space alongside DJ Nobu, and Berlin’s infamous gay nights Herrensauna and Buttons.

Twin Peaks: DJ YAZI + Haruka

"Opening with otherworldly ambient bliss, psychedelia takes over before soot black broken beats begin to make a more physical impact. Things get ever-weirder from there, whether that’s with passages of spooky dub or paranoid techno. Throughout the session, though, you feel wholly consumed by, and lost in, a convincing parallel world that is as cinematic as it is cerebral." Twin Peaks Dekmantel Podcast

Together they play as Twin Peaks, an improvisational live/ DJ hybrid act who had their European debut this month at Concrete, Paris and Tresor, Berlin!

BOOKING NOW

DJ YAZI and Haruka are currently touring Europe playing Grounded Theory at Tresor, Rote Sonne, in Munich and Concrete, Paris.  We're now considering their next EU tour period so please get in touch for either individual DJ sets or hybrid B2B together as Twin Peaks!

All the best,
