Recounting the Oroville Dam Spillway Failure

Former Acting Director, California Division of Water Resources, to Speak at SWCD Annual Water Seminar

In the midst of the wettest year on record for California, a sudden gaping hole appeared in the Oroville Dam spillway on February 7, 2017, leading to the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people for fear the emergency spillway would fail. Bill Croyle led the California Division of Water Resources through the crisis, now in recovery as construction workers rebuild the bulk of the spillway structure and strengthen the emergency spillway. Mr. Croyle will recount his experience and share lessons learned at SWCD's Annual Water Seminar on Friday, April 6.

Mr. Croyle joins a list of prominent experts confirmed to address this year's crowd, including Kevin Rein, State Engineer, Colorado Division of Water Resources and Becky Mitchell, Executive Director, Colorado Water Conservation Board.

In the context of dismal snowpack, this program titled "Weathering the Weather: Resilience in Managing Our Water Resources Today" will highlight lessons for our local communities in preparing for and responding to sudden challenges.
