Principal's Message
As term 1 draws to a close I would like to say I am especially proud of the work that Alfred Deakin High School does with students to support their ongoing wellbeing. This has been particularly evident when traumatic events impact our school. Our professional and compassionate staff offer exemplary support to students day in, day out. Indeed our longstanding commitment to the community has been recognised with a Canberra Gold Award.
As you read through this edition you will see the diverse range of activities and opportunities that students at ADHS have had in term 1. This has or will include the PANTHERS and ELEMENTS camps, Year 7 and Year 8 camps, French Film Festival, and Sydney Jewish Museum Excursions, to name a few.
On behalf of the ADHS community I would like to thank retiring board members:
Board Chair: Andrew Bealing
Parent Representative: Karen Binnekamp
Teacher Representative: Kristy Buchanan
Student Representatives: Jay Cornwall and Hamish McKinnon;
for their active participation, dedication and contribution to the governance of our school.
This also means that we now welcome a number of new board members for 2018. These include:
Parent Representative: Julia Graczyk
Teacher Representative: Elizabeth Lorenz
Student Representatives: Charlotte Yeoh and Gunhee Kim
The first Board meeting for this new term is on Tuesday 3rd April.
Funds contributed by parents as Subject Consumables form an integral part of the learning programs at ADHS. As the name suggests, Subject Consumables go directly to pay some of the costs associated with items that are used in classes. For example, timber, guitar strings, food stuff, ropes and harness and photo paper. Other, less obvious costs include maintenance and replacement of equipment such as cameras, mics and books. This semester's family invoices for subject consumables have been delayed. They will be emailed out by the end of this term.
Progress reports were issued on Wednesday 28th March via email. If you have not received your student’s Report please contact the school urgently. The reports indicate each student’s progress in subjects studied. All parents are encouraged to attend one or both of the Parent Teacher evenings (Tuesday 3rd April and Monday 9th April 4.00 – 6.00 pm both nights). This is a most important occasion on our school calendar and enables parents/carers to meet and discuss student progress with each teacher. As in past years parent-teacher interviews will be managed online through Schools Online Booking System (SOBS) to assist parents in securing their preferred interview times. Appointments are generally five minutes in duration, and you are welcome to seek a double time slot, or to make an appointment to see the class teacher at another time if you feel a longer meeting is required. An attachment was issued with the reports on 28th March advising of the procedure.
As this Digest is my only opportunity in my short time at the top, I would like to thank Jacqui Millard for her work as Deputy Principal, and also thanks to Katerina Anderson for her work as Executive Teacher in Science.
