Apple this week said it will begin releasing original series as early as spring next year. Meanwhile, regional SVoD players continue to target global roll-out with HBO expanding its direct-to-consumer service, HBO Go, to Poland to bring its reach to a total of 17 countries, and Rakuten's Spain-based SVoD service set for a launch across Europe. Amazon is reportedly gearing up to launch its Channels service in France and Turner is about to launch a new sport OTT service, Bleacher Report, in the US.
Indian satellite operators Videocon and d2h have merged to create a 28m-subscriber operator, the second largest satellite player in the world. Polish cable got a shock this week when Liberty Global subsidiary UPC dropped its planned acquisition of Multimedia Polska. Sweden's Modern Times Group has split in two just weeks after a deal to merge its TV assets with Danish telecoms group TDC collapsed. The group's digital entertainment and eSports assets will now be run as a separate entity.
Spanish telco Telefonica is also placing a further bet on its own burgening eSports business with the launch of a training academy for eSports talent. And Spain looks set to get a mega augmented-catch-up TV service after three of the biggest free-to-air (FTA) broadcasters - including pubcaster RTVE - said they would open a joint catch-up service to all FTA channels and their associated on-demand platforms.
