Hofstra Prez Rabinowitz says new AD Cole "is the one to take us to the next level," which to Rabinowitz means the MBB & WBB NCAA Tournaments. Rabinowitz also indicates the Pride could consider a conference change, "We are open to all of these issues, that’s another reason why I’m so excited about the new athletic director. He knows the landscape, he knows the metro area. The CAA has some great schools in it academic and otherwise. It has some burdens to it. We need to first decide where we really would like to be and then we need to get invited there." Cole, who will get started in Hempstead on May 21, "Having a plan to win is key. Everybody wants to win. In sports, there’s a measure at the end of what we do. There’s a winner and a loser. I think it’s a great opportunity when a new athletic director comes in that we can take a hard look at our visions, our strategy and outline a road map." (link, link); Here's the full presser video. Fresno State Prez Castro on his AD search, "...we’re working right now to get the search committee together. I was thinking we would post it in May, but we’re going to try to post it in April now and give us more time to see who’s out there. I expect we’ll have a very strong field here, as well. We’ve already been getting a lot of phone calls. I hope to have somebody on board in July. I’m being deliberative on the athletic director, and there is a good reason for that. We have Steve Robertello as our interim director. He’s a trusted, competent and passionate leader and he’s been helping me stabilize the situation. Obviously, the things that happened last year were not expected and planned for. And so what we’re doing now is preparing for the search. It’s taking a few months, but as I’ve said to everybody, it’s kind of like getting your house cleaned up before the guests arrive. Meanwhile, Steve is providing great leadership, our coaches are doing what they need to do and our student-athletes are succeeding in lots of different ways." (link)
Appalachian State boss Gillin inks an extension that could keep him in Boone through 2022. Chancellor Everts effusive in her praise, "Doug Gillin's leadership of the athletics division has led to unprecedented success for our student-athletes in the classroom and in their sports. I appreciate his emphasis on the academic success of our student-athletes, his inclusive vision and his thoughtful approach to growth for our athletics programs." No word on any compensation changes. (link)
December 3rd in Oakland will mark the start of the NCAA's trial with plaintiff attorneys in the Alston & Kessler cases as U.S. District Judge Wilken decided upon the course of action yesterday. At the center of the developments are caps placed on what student-athletes can receive for tuition, room & board, meals, books, fees & incidentals. USA Today's Berkowitz keeping a close eye on things. The trial is set for no more than 10 days. (link); Here's the full ruling. (link)
California Assemblymember Holden introduces Assembly Bill 2747, dubbed the 'College Athletes' Civil Rights Act of 2018,' which would "protect college athletes from harmful policies by the NCAA," self-organize & create an Olympic Model of operation. The legislation claims to be the first of its kind in the nation. Holden: "College athletes are playing in an exploitive system where the NCAA makes billions in profits while they are forced to pursue higher education without the same rights and financial freedoms as any other student on campus." More. (link)
Idaho AD Spear still getting some pushback from the student population on his handling of sexual assault claims by two then-UI female student-athletes against a FB student-athlete who was soon after expelled from school. However, Vandals Prez Staben looks to be fully in Spear's corner, "Frankly, I think he is at this point in time a role model for this university in his actions in this respect." Senior Soccer student-athlete Dopke: "As a soccer team, we are unified as a team in supporting Rob Spear." Women's Soccer AC Sanford points to Spear knowing the names of all 400 student-athletes in the department. Former Women's Soccer student-athlete Reader: "I never once felt this athletics department was a boys’ athletics department…I chose to be a Vandal because of the safety I felt here." (link)
New permanent Louisville AD Tyra can maintain his ownership stake in local soccer club Louisville City FC, but only on the grounds he "can’t watch (Louisville City FC)-run soccer clinics, camps, or tryouts that include observing HS-aged prospects; he can’t observe (a) youth soccer tournament off-campus even if representing (Louisville City FC) at the event; and he can’t communicate (call/text/write/email/meet with) a high school prospect and/or their parents under the guise of (Louisville City FC) business." The NCAA says it's up to the university to follow all association rules & "does not have any information on similar situations around the country." (link)
The FCS Selection Committee will attempt to more thoroughly communicate its process for setting post-season participants "during informational sessions at various conference meetings." Wofford AD & 2017 selection chair Johnson, "The committee membership needs to understand the process, how we go about it, the lack of lobbying (toward a committee member’s respective conference), the impartiality." Of note, five of the 10 committee members will be new going in to the 2018 season.  (link)
The Texas Secretary of State's office is officially investigating runner Dawkins in the MBB-FBI developments that allegedly includes Texas MBB student-athlete Davis. It's believed to be the first time the state has pointed to the Uniform Athlete Agents Act to proceed with an inquiry, which is technically not a criminal investigation. Dawkins' attorney pushed back, "You have to look long and hard to find a case where they pursue an agent, a runner, a marketer or anyone under the Agent Athlete Act. Prosecutors don’t waste resources on this stuff when they are dealing with far more serious crimes such as drug trafficking, organized crime or terrorism." (link)
LEAD1 launches a new weekly video series with Executive Director McMillen, starting with thoughts on the MBB-FBI situation. McMillen: "If there's one thing that could be done to clean up college basketball, it would be to modify the one-and-done rule. [...] As a result of this rule, a black market has been created. [...] Why? Because these young athletes can't reap the benefits of going directly to the pros. [...] It's incumbent on the NBA & the NBA Players Association to create an alternative pathway for these young athletes. Seventy-percent of our membership support baseball's rule and even a two-and-done rule would be better than the current arrangement." (link)

NBA Commish Silver on strategy behind micropayment of $0.99 to watch short snippets of live game action, a practice that could be widely copied if the dollars make sense, "There’s no doubt there’ll be people who will see on social media there’s an exciting finish to a game and so they might be more inclined to watch the last five minutes, but I also think there’ll be an audience for people earlier in the evening who know, for whatever reason, they only have time during the first and second quarter to watch a game and don’t think it’s a good consumer proposition to have to buy a whole game." Interestingly, Silver calls such engagement "snacking." Also from Silver, "I think you have a generation that’s used to being up-sold throughout a game. […] We didn’t begin this just as a business opportunity. It began as an opportunity to engage more fans." (link)

Washington's new apparel deal could be worth $10M+ annually as the Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner writes on the Huskies decision of whether to go with Nike or Adidas. UW AD Cohen: "These deals are always about timing. [...] What the (UCLA) and Cal deals did, to a certain degree, was open people’s eyes that there are a lot of different ways you can go with an apparel partner." The Portland Business Journal's Duffy remarks that Washington represents a chance for Adidas to secure a premier brand in the Northwest, a region dominated by Nike & one unnamed insider notes, "Jen is one of the few ADs with true guts, but she’ll be under pressure from people there who have long ties to Nike." More Cohen: "We're really open minded." (link)
Oklahoma AD Castiglione on new OU Prez Gallogly, "Our conversation early this morning, he was very well-versed in everything that was taking place in our athletic program, how we’ve grown and what we need to do to continue our path of growth. This isn’t going to be not quite a new thing for him to understand. I also felt good because we know where our place fits in the overall campus life and our culture and what we’re trying to do within intercollegiate athletics and how we want to reflect positively on the rest of the campus." What does an AD need in a Prez? "None of us ever have a complacent attitude, a status-quo attitude, or a feeling of any sense that we’ve finished the job. It’s always a work in progress. He’ll get the right people in the right place doing the right things, just like we try to do with intercollegiate athletics. There are a lot of experiences that will easily transfer. This will be a great transition." More. (link)
Auburn AD Greene "absolutely" expects MBB HC Pearl to return to The Plains to continue leading the MBB programs. More Greene: "We want to do it the right way, and it’s unfortunate that the state of college basketball is where it is. We didn’t get that way overnight, and we certainly won’t fix things overnight. But knowing the process of the FBI and NCAA investigation — who knows how long it’s going to be? It’s going to be lengthy. So, I think it’s in our best interest to stay the course. […] One of the things that’s really important to the Auburn family is we do things the right way. Bruce feels like he’s done nothing wrong. He and I have talked about that, and I don’t have a reason to do anything other than what we’ve been doing — supporting him and his student-athletes." (link)
Rutgers Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Development Tucker is headed to NJCU (DIII) as its new AD. Tucker will be one of the youngest DIII ADs at 33, "Every administrator, staff, coach and department personnel will be empowered, challenged and motivated to collectively write one of the best chapters in New Jersey City University Athletics history. It's time to go to work." (link); Missouri AD Sterk reaches back to his San Diego State network to hire new Executive Assoc. AD for Compliance & Administration Humes, who spent the last three-plus years as Assoc. AD for Compliance for the Aztecs. (link)

(link); Check out this moment from new Charlotte MBB HC Sanchez's presser where he points to the support of his wife as crucial for his own personal success & describes the realities of being away from the home so often as an advancing coach. (link); Also, not sure I've ever seen an intro presser like the one new Tennessee State MBB HC Collins directed, yes, directed, in Nashville. Collins fully integrated the band & crowd into his remarks. (link); Georgia Tech AC Hardy heads north to take over Loyola-Maryland's program. ESPN's Goodman & Borzello dig into McDonald's All-American Game selections, and finds, among other interesting data points, "During a 20-year stretch from 1993-2012, 42 percent of McDonald's All Americans played fewer than 25 career NBA games." Good quote from former Mississippi State student-athlete Sidney, "We think that we made it. We get the red carpet as a McDonald's All American. We're in magazines, sign autographs. A lot of us think we already made it. I thought I had made it. You don't work as hard. You aren't as hungry. You think your talent will get you to the league, but someone else is outworking you." (link)
Outgoing Utah AD Hill says if BYU could get access to a 'Power 5' league it would make the Utes-Cougars rivalry "a little less toxic." Hill: "It would have sure been nice if they would have picked BYU in the Big 12. […] It would have made things a lot less toxic, I think in a way, because then we’re both playing in a Power Five and we don’t have that kind of anxiety back and forth." Utes FB HC Whittingham lauds Hill's work in Salt Lake City, "You look at where the department was when he took over and where it is now, it’s a whole new ballgame. It’s apples and oranges. He’s done a great job of navigating through the changing times and the changing landscape." (link)
As Loyola-Chicago's MBB tournament run continues, so too do merchandise sales and general interest in the university. The Ramblers, of course, are not the first "Cinderella" in recent years to reach the Final Four - remember No. 11 seed George Mason in 2006? GMU Communications professor Smith offered some advice to the folks in the Windy City: "The administration, I think, should be prepared for more [general public] interest in applying. The admissions department will be busier. I think they will because [people will say], 'Oh, I hadn’t thought about Loyola Chicago.' They’re the hot university now." George Mason saw a 350% increase in inquiries about applying, a 54% jump in out-of-state applications, GPA increases in the applicant pool and "significant declines in counseling appointments" at student services. GMU Deputy AD/COO McNamee: "It is a wonderful, wonderful opportunity to get your story out... a quick, intense opportunity the likes of which few schools ever have." (link)
More on Oklahoma State's new baseball stadium, the official plans for which will be announced today. Looks like the new facility, likely located north of the Greenwood Tennis Center, will be ready in 2020. HC Holliday: "I don't want to spoil the details for (Thursday), but it's more than I could've ever dreamed of. ... It's everything that our campus stands for. It's everything this program's been built on. It's everything we want to be about moving forward. It's unique to our school and our community." No word yet on the cost of the project, nor what will happen to the Cowboys current home, Reynolds Stadium, once the new space is occupied. (link)
The Houston Chronicle profiles Houston FB student-athlete Oliver, whom the school will market in a Heisman Trophy campaign later this summer. Given the fact that the last 20 Heisman winners have been quarterbacks or running backs, UH Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communication and Digital Media Bassity realizes there will be some challenges in Oliver becoming just the second primarily defensive position player to bring home the trophy in the award's 83-year history. Bassity: "[The Heisman Trophy] kind of mirrors and political race. Where can you pick up votes? ... A huge success would be getting him to New York. ... It's really how you finish the season. I don't think you can win it in September or early October, but you keep yourself in the mix. It's a distance race." More on the history of school's efforts to promote individual players for the award, including Oregon spending $250K in 2001 for QB Harrington, "Turner the Burner" hot sauce for Northern Illinois running back Turner in 2003 and Baylor's Robert Griffin III trading cards in 2011. The trial of former Arizona Track & Field AC Carter continues, with opening statements from both sides heard yesterday. The only witness to take the stand, thus far, is former Zona student-athlete Gibson, who has accused Carter of harassing, stalking and threatening her. UAPD detectives and a friend of Gibson's are expected to testify today. (link)

(link); UCF says the end of its 2017 FB season, specifically Nov. 17, 2017 - Jan. 31, 2018, has been worth $171M in equivalent advertising. (link); The Kansas-Duke Elite Eight game had a 9.2 rating - the highest Elite Eight rated game since 2005 - and 15.44M viewers on CBS, up 3% in ratings but down a touch in viewership from last year's UNC-Kentucky matchup. Michigan AD Manuel on MBB HC Beilein: "I sleep well at night with John at the helm. […] This might be the first time I've said this publicly. I'm still here as athletic director because I didn't respond to some of the emails and letters from fans who told me last year that John Beilein needed to be fired and was a terrible coach. People reacted emotionally. I just took the letters and filed them away. I thought it was laughable. [...] It's who you can meld in your team to play the game you want, to win the game. Ultimately, that's what John has done his whole career." (link)
