Hello Colleague, here is Nova's April 2018 e-bulletin!

In this bulletin you'll find details of a wide range of news, events, funding and training for the voluntary sector in and around the Wakefield District. We regularly update the website so please do check on a frequent basis in order to keep up to date. 

Remember: if you are a Nova member you can send in your own events, training, news and jobs through the members area on the website.

On 14 March 2018 Nova hosted #CANCon, the Wakefield Community Anchor Network Conference. The conference was full of lots of inspiring, creative projects that are happening within community anchors in Wakefield. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed and attended! To check out what happened, please read the #CANCon blog.


WYCAS Advice Surgeries 2018

The WYCAS Advice Surgery dates for 2018 have now been arranged. These sessions, with Lis Beverley from WYCAS, give you the opportunity to chat through and seek advice on any finance or accounting issues or queries you have. All of the Advice Surgeries run from 10.00am - 12.00pm and are at Nova. If you would like to attend, please contact Lis by calling 0113 270 6291. The dates for 2018 are:

News

Victim Support winning contract

Victim Support has won the West Yorkshire Victim Referral, Assessment and Local Support Services contract, commissioned by the PCC. This means that after 40+ years of providing support to victims of crime, it will continue to provide victim services across West Yorkshire. The new contract will run from Monday 26 March 2018 for 3 years, with an option to extend for a further 2 years. The main new developments in the service provision include:
  • Direct work with Children and Young People (supporting all ages)
  • Providing support to all Victims of Crime
  • Better use of technology for contacting Enhanced and Standard crime referrals
  • Live web chat service
  • RJ information provided to all victims and referral to RJ services if requested
  • Support with VPS Writing
  • Service provided 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday
  • Victims Hubs in each of the 5 districts of West Yorkshire (new hub in Calderdale)
  • Caseworker support for victims with more intense, complex needs
  • Annual Review and Update of the Help for Victims website

Healthwatch Wakefield - Support Services Survey

Healthwatch Wakefield would like to know what you think to local support services in Wakefield District. If you would like to share your views, please take part in the short survey, which is designed to help Heathwatch Wakefield get a better picture of what people feel is available. The survey will run until the end of April 2018.


Power to Change - Community Business Weekend

Community Business Weekend is taking place 4 - 7 May 2018. Community Business Weekend, which is organised by Power to Change, exists to shine a light on the 7,000 community businesses across the country. For more information, please visit the Community Business Weekend website.

Nova will be hosting a network meeting on 8 May 2018 to discuss Community-led Housing in the Wakefield District as part of Community Business Weekend run by Power to Change. See the Events section below for further details.


Public Health Learning and Development Programme

Part One of the fourth annual Wakefield Public Health Learning and Development (CPD) programme is now available. The programme offers a wide range of free, bite-sized learning opportunities for workers and volunteers (the wider public health workforce) who have a role and opportunity in improving the health and wellbeing of residents of Wakefield District. The overall aims of the programme are to:
  • Improve awareness and appreciation of the breadth of public health and current priorities
  • Enhance the understanding, skills and practice of workers in order to promote the health and wellbeing of Wakefield District’s residents.

Wakefield District Third Sector Community Safety 'Big Conversation'
18 April 2018 | 9.30am - 12.00pm, St Catherine's Church & Centre, Doncaster Road, Wakefield, WF1 5HL
This event will be delivered by Nova in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner West Yorkshire and the Wakefield Together Partnership. The event will provide an opportunity to look at third sector and partnership solutions to challenges identified in the Wakefield Community Safety Plan, including:
  • Domestic abuse
  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Hate crime
Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber (SEYH) Annual Conference 2018
20 April 2018 | 10.00am - 4.00pm, Temple Hall, York St John University, 34 Saint John Street, York, YO31 7EX
The 2018 SEYH Conference will bring together regional social enterprises and entrepreneurs, businesses and members of the third sector along with a mixture of other exciting people who are passionate about social enterprise.

FREE Popup Business Advice Cafe
24 April 2018 | 8.00am - 11.30am, Create Cafe, Burton Street, Wakefield, WF1 2DD
Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (the LEP) is coming to Wakefield to hold a Popup Business Advice Cafe in partnership with Wakefield First. Local experts will be on hand to give practical answers to your questions on a range of business topics, including Starting up, Skills and training, Growing your business, IT and much more.

Nova Learning and Networking - How to Obtain Funding for your Organisation

Community-led Housing in the Wakefield District network meeting

Nova is hosting a network meeting to discuss Community-led Housing in the Wakefield District as part of Community Business Weekend run by Power to Change. Nova Learning and Networking - Promoting your Organisation
23 May 2018 | 10.00am - 12.00pm, Nova Wakefield District Limited, 11 Upper York Street, Wakefield, WF1 3LQ
This session will provide you with a brief introduction to how to use communications and marketing techniques in order to promote your organisation. This might be through social media, in print, through your website, by word of mouth and more. There are lots of free online tools and resources that can help you promote your organisation – some of our favourites will be shared at the session.

Funding Opportunities
There are lots of funding opportunities on the Nova website at the moment. Please see below for a selection of the funding opportunities currently available:

Big Lottery Fund - Youth Unemployment Scheme
The Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK, has announced plans to put young people at the heart of designing a £90 million scheme to help tackle youth unemployment. The new £90m youth fund will be invested in programmes which help young people facing barriers to work to reach their full potential. Over the next three months participants, aged 16-24 and from diverse communities, will take centre stage at a variety of events across the country to explain the issues they face, including the inequalities apparent in youth unemployment, and help develop ideas to remove barriers to education, employment and training.

John Lewis Foundation
Application deadline: Applications can be made at any time.
Grants are available for registered charities for projects that support disadvantaged communities to acquire relevant skills for meaningful employment. The Foundation seeks to advance general charitable purposes through independent ventures and by working with other organisations with whom it shares a vision or interest.

The Edge Foundation - Grant Fund
Application deadline: 3 May 2018
Grants are available for educational establishments and not-for-profit organisations working within the education sector for projects that build on proven models of success or test new approaches to education and learning. This is the second round with the third round expected to open in 2020. Each round will have up to £1m of grant funding available. Grants of between £30,000 and £100,000 are available in round two. All educational establishments or not-for-profit organisations working within the education sector may apply with the funding being for both short and long term projects that build on proven models of success or test new approaches within education and learning.

Calor Gas - Rural Community Fund
Application deadline: 21 May 2018
The rural energy provider set up the Rural Community Fund in 2017 as a way to give something back to the community, and once again it is offering rural off-grid communities in England, Scotland and Wales the chance to win funding for projects that will improve local life. 

Comic Relief - Safe, Secure, Settled Fund
Application deadline: 14 June 2018
This initiative will invest in projects that are using sport to improve the lives of young people without a safe or secure place to live, helping them to gain the skills and resources to lead safe and positive lives. Applications are welcome for a minimum of £100,000 and a maximum of £500,000, over a period of between two and four years.

  • Increase confidence in using the framework
  • Recognise how it can complement your work
  • Identify and overcome barriers to using the framework

GDPR Training Session
26 April 2018 | 4.00pm - 6.00pm, St Swithun's Community Centre, Arncliffe Road, Wakefield, WF1 4RR
GDPR is set to impact on charities and businesses across the European Union, as it expands the rights of individuals to control how their personal information is collected and processed. The new regulation also places a range of new obligations on organisations to be more accountable for data protection. In order to help you gain an understanding of what you need to do in the run up to GDPR coming into effect, we are running a training session for you which will cover some of the most essential aspects of GDPR, which will help you prepare. Tim Larden, Ladbrook Insurance will be delivering the session, which will cover:
  • What GDPR means for your charity
  • How you should prepare
  • New elements of the regulation which will affect the data that you hold
Heavily Subsidised Small Charity Training in Leeds inc. GDPR
2 May 2018 | 9.30am - 4.30pm, St George's Conference Centre, Great George Street, Leeds, LS1 3DL
With support from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the FSI is delivering a heavily subsidised training event in Leeds on 2 May 2018 offering small and local charities and community groups five courses on key fundraising topics, including GDPR.
