Step 5 Admitted to God, ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
--Principle: Integrity

Tradition 5 Each group has but one primary purpose--to carry its message to the compulsive overeater who still suffers.
--Principle: Purpose

Concept 5 Individuals have the right of appeal and petition in order to ensure that their opinions and personal grievances will be carefully considered.
--Principle: Consideration

Step 6 We were ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
--Principle: Willingness

Tradition 6 An OA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the OA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.
--Principle: Solidarity

Concept 6 The World Service Business Conference has entrusted the Board of Trustees with the primary responsibility for the administration of Overeaters Anonymous.
--Principle: Responsibility

Chair's Corner

This is the last article I will write for our Recovery Newsletter as chair of the Brandywine Intergroup.  I must say that I was not expecting to take on this position almost two years ago (in fact, I WOULD HAVE SAID NO), but my HP had other plans for me. It has been an honor to serve on the board with Cathe S., Melanie K., Irene C., Jane S., and Louisa I. They made doing my “job” easier. Other individuals who have stepped up and served in different capacities are: Marilyn V., Laura W., Bob B., Ken W., Mike T., Ann T., Carolyn McG., and Nancy D. (if I’ve forgotten anyone, I’m very sorry. Don’t take it personally….I have a very active “forgetter!”). In addition, if your meeting has an intergroup rep and they consistently come to intergroup meetings and get news from the intergroup back to you, they are doing a great job and are an asset to your meeting! It’s been my pleasure to serve alongside all of you.

There is so much to be done to see that our face-to-face fellowship continues to be available to all who suffer with our disease and who have a desire to stop eating compulsively. Some of the most important things we can do as members in recovery are to: protect our abstinence, work the  steps, help others work the steps, make outreach calls (to our sponsors, to newcomers, to members we haven’t seen in a while), uphold the traditions, and give service (to name a few). YES, give service!! And, if possible, give service above the group level - I promise you, you won’t regret it! Service above the group level has always given me an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone AND to meet to OAers that I don’t see in my weekly meetings.

Elections for the intergroup will take place in July. There are members who have agreed to have their names on the ballot for every position except for chair. Listen, if my HP gave me the ability to manage this position for two years, your HP can help you, too. You need to have one year of current abstinence and to have given service above the group level. That service could have been given at any time. Keep in mind that the outgoing chair remains as an ex-officio member of the board for one year to be of assistance to the new chair/board (if they want the support). Pray about it. It is a wonderful opportunity for growth. Call me (302-753-3767) if you have any questions about the position.

Again, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to serve and look forward to continue to give service to the Brandywine Intergroup.

Yours in Recovery
Mary Frances W.

I got abstinent the week after doing the Fifth Step. Nothing was magical about January 17. On that date, I had a food plan that was comfortable for me; I was going to meetings, doing service, and working the Steps and Tools. I put down the fork after my abstinent meals and didn’t pick it back up no matter what. I still do this today.

Fear and Trust are Rooms of My House

Fear is faith in negative realities.
Trust is faith in positive realities.
They are reciprocal like a teeter-totter:

To the extent I have fear, I’m not in trust.
To the extent I have trust, I’m not in fear.

Fear and trust are rooms in my house; I can occupy one or the other or live in between. This is a conscious decision for which I am responsible; and my consciousness of that is also a teeter-totter

Note to myself on my birthday to read on my next birthday:
Don't forget you have succeeded in many ways in your life. You’ve had failure, heartache, shame, frustration, like every human, but you never gave up trying to be a better person. Celebrate that! (anon)

OA Promise

I put my hand in yours, and together we can do

what we could never do alone.

No longer is there a sense of hopelessness,

no longer must we each depend

upon our own unsteady willpower.

We are all together now,

reaching out our hands for power and

strength greater than ours, and as we join hands,

we find love and understanding

beyond our wildest dreams.

OA Preamble
Overeaters Anonymous is a Fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience, strength, and hope, are recovering from compulsive overeating.
We welcome everyone who wants to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues or fees for members; we are self-supporting through our own contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations. OA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; we take no position on outside issues.
Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors and to carry the message of recovery through the Twelve Steps of OA to those who still suffer.
