Spring 2018 Kent ISD MTSS Update
In an effort to be the first choice for educational services that allow every student in every classroom to achieve every day, Kent ISD is committed to providing a continuum of supports for local districts as they implement an integrated academic and behavioral Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.  Our team works to develop local leadership teams who facilitate and support quality systems resulting in sustainable changes that increase achievement for ALL students.
Building District Capacity
  • Kent ISD's MTSS Team is currently supporting 8 local districts and 1 public school academy to develop implementation capacity. Six of our 7 partners that have been implementing for a year or more either met the target score of 80% or improved their score by 10 percentage points on the District Capacity Assessment.
  • In Grandville Public Schools, all elementary buildings are consistently implementing a 90 minute reading block across all grade levels. The district also reports improved use of data to inform instruction at both the grade-level and building level.
  • Data is also informing instructional decisions at Caledonia Community Schools. The district is currently reviewing reading programs in order to adopt a new curriculum that aligns with their tier 1 MTSS reading system. Through their review of behavioral data, they also recognized a need for additional behavioral and mental health supports and are exploring ways to increase these supports to students.
MTSS Accomplishments
  • From Fall 2017 to Winter 2018, Hope Academy of West Michigan increased the percentage of kindergarten students at benchmark for the phonemic awareness skill of first sound fluency from 32% to 79%! Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds."There is considerable evidence that the primary difference between good and poor readers lies in the good reader's phonological processing ability." (University of Oregon, Center on Teaching and Learning) Click here for more information on phonemic awareness.
  • This winter all three of the elementary buildings from Grandville's first MTSS cohort met the target of 80% of students meeting benchmark for reading! Two of the other 4 buildings also met this target!
  • A new study indicates that for every $1 invested in School-Wide PBIS, there is a fiscal savings of $104.90 when compared to costs related to suspension and dropout. To read this study, click here.
MTSS At The State
From the Top 10 in 10, to Third Grade Reading, to Seclusion and Restraint, the supports provided by Kent ISD's MTSS team help local districts meet the demands of several state initiatives. Kent ISD is partnered with Michigan's Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MIBLSI) to support local districts in the implementation of an integrated MTSS framework. To read more about the value added by MIBLSI's model to state initiatives, click here or on the graphic above. The connection between our MTSS work and the Third Grade Reading Law was also recently featured in The Bulletin, Kent ISD's Professional Development Blog
