C.A.R.L Boutique Thrift Store
Posting from their Facebook, March 16th
Hello followers!
I’ve been meaning to write this for a while now but it’s just been too difficult to actually sit down and do it. Two and a half weeks ago we lost our amazing manager Phyllis suddenly and unexpectedly!!! We are beyond devastated!! Our current lease was in her name and that being said two days after her passing we received another devastating blow! Due to her death, we no longer have a valid lease and were given a 60 day eviction notice! As you could imagine we were all devastated once again. Phyllis ran a nonprofit thrift store at this location for 10+ years and now the new owner of the building no longer wants to host us as tenants. Absolutely horrible!!!
On a positive note we are moving!!!! We will not let Phyllis’s legacy die!! We have narrowed it down to two locations that are very close to our current place!! We will need help moving! This is going to be a huge expense for CARL!! If you would like to contribute to our move, physically or financially, please contact me! When we finalize our new location we will be blasting Ventura County with flyers!! Stay tuned and thank you for being such loyal followers!!
Yours Truly,

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month
April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month and a great opportunity for pet owners to brush up on tips from the American Red Cross to keep their animals safe and healthy as we head into spring and summer.
HEAT STROKE
Heat stroke is one of the most common problems pets face in the warmer weather when they are not yet used to the warm temperatures. Pet owners should remember that the inside of a car can quickly reach 120 degrees in warm weather and should not leave their animals in the car, even during short trips. This can quickly lead to heat stroke. The signs of heat stroke include:
- Heavy panting and being unable to calm down, even when lying down.
- The pet’s gums may be brick red, they may have a fast pulse rate, or they may not be able to get up.
If someone suspects their pet has heat stroke, they should take the pet’s temperature rectally. If the temperature is above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, they should cool the animal down. The easiest way to do this is by using the water hose. Stop cooling the animal when the temperature reaches 103 degrees. Bring the pet to the veterinarian immediately as heat stroke can lead to severe organ dysfunction and damage.
OTHER HAZARDS
Open doors and windows can be hazardous to a pet. The animal may try to get outside, increasing the risk of falling from windows or being hit by a vehicle. Some plants and flowers can be hazardous. For instance, many lilies are very poisonous to cats. Visit the ASPCA Poison Control web site to find out which plants and flowers are poisonous to animals. If someone thinks their animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, they should contact their veterinarian.
PET FIRST AID
Courses are available at many Red Cross chapters on how to care for your pet. The Red Cross has also developed Dog First Aid and Cat First Aid Guides with DVDs that teach basic responsibilities like spaying/neutering and giving medications, to performing CPR and preparing for disasters. Visit Redcross.org/training or call 1-800 RED CROSS to see when classes are available. The Guides are available through the Red Cross Store.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR PET HEALTHY
Pet owners can follow these important steps to help keep their pet healthy:
- Give pets plenty of exercise.
- Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool water.
- Make sure they get regular yearly checkups with their veterinarian, and are up to date on vaccines, especially rabies.
- Get pets spayed or neutered.
- Keep dogs on leashes outside – another animal may be too much temptation
- Know how to perform CPR and provide basic first aid until veterinary care is available
EMERGENCIES AND YOUR PET
Don’t forget to include pets in planning for emergencies in your home or neighborhood:
- Make plans to take your pets with you if you have to evacuate.
- Most Red Cross shelters cannot accept pets because of health and safety concerns and other considerations. Know which friends, relatives, hotels, boarding facilities will accept pets in an emergency.
- Assemble an easy-to-carry kit with emergency supplies for pets: Leashes, harnesses and/or carriers
- Food, drinking water, bowls, manual can opener
- Medications and copies of medical records
- Current photos of the pets
Pet First Aid Awareness Month is a great time for people to learn how to protect their pet and keep them healthy. More information on how to keep pets in good health are located on the Red Cross Pets and Disaster Safety Checklist.

Milo’s Kitchen Dog Treats Recall
Limited Production of Two Varieties of Milo’s Kitchen® Dog Treats Voluntarily Recalled Due to Potentially Elevated Levels of Thyroid Hormone
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 22, 2018 – Orrville, OH – The J.M. Smucker Company today announced a limited, voluntary recall of specific lots of two varieties of Milo's Kitchen® dog treats, distributed nationally, because the products potentially contain elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone.
The impacted production includes the following items and lots:
Dogs consuming high levels of beef thyroid hormone may exhibit symptoms such as increased thirst and urination, weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness. These symptoms may resolve when the consumption of these levels is discontinued. However, with prolonged consumption these symptoms may increase in severity and may include vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid or labored breathing. Should these symptoms occur, we recommend pet owners contact their veterinarian immediately.
The FDA informed Smucker of three illness reports and we immediately initiated a voluntary recall of the limited, impacted production.
Consumers who have purchased the specific lots of product listed above should stop feeding it to their dogs. If consumers have questions or would like to receive a refund or coupon for replacement product, they should call us at 1-888-569-6767, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM EST or email us by completing this form.
No other Milo's Kitchen® dog treats, or any other product manufactured by The J.M. Smucker Company, are impacted.
The voluntary recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Help Keep our Dogs Warm and Dry
The Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dog rescue and adoption organization. Since 1996, CARL has been a valuable resource for the Ventura County shelter and local rescue organizations, placing thousands of unwanted, abandoned and homeless dogs in pre-screened, loving, forever homes.
As a no-kill sanctuary for dogs, we provide a last, best hope for dogs at risk of euthanasia. A place for them to live out the rest of their lives in a safe, secure, caring environment.
During the recent fires, CARL stepped up and provided safe harbor for dogs from local rescues whose properties were threatened. Everyone know they can count on CARL
We need to repair and expand our facilities to accommodate the ever-growing demand. There is great need and our resources are extremely limited. There is, however, a very pressing need. The recent damaging winds have wreaked havoc on our kennel roofs and they need to be replaced before raindrops start falling on their heads. Our only source of funds for this vital project will come from your donations on this crowdfunding page. All donations are tax deductible.
We now have $10,000 of our 12K goal for the roofs! For more information visit
