Greetings Friends,
As I sit in my favorite café in the little Coastal town of Carpinteria (my home for now), I look out at the morning fog. This is typical springtime weather in many parts of California. The fog is so dense it obscures my view of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Almost invariably, the dense marine layer will lift by the afternoon replaced by blue skies and sunshine.

It isn’t a stretch to see it as an analogy of how consciousness works. We come in and out of clarity and it can lift in a moment or we can be in thick fog for some time trying to find the way forward. At a certain level, there is no “world” as we believe it to be. If indeed we are energy beings and everything around us is also energy, then what is true about reality? It is an ever-changing malleable experience.

Protests in large numbers have become an important form of expression at this time. They are usually large gatherings coming together in solidarity to stand up against an injustice of one kind or another. This is of course a step toward societal change. It comes out of a condition of feeling powerless or frustrated by circumstance.

Yet, ultimately the change we desire is the one that we do have control over. It is that which is within inside of us. Now, of course there is always a hidden paradox. Sometimes to move forward we have to let go and become free of our mental burdens.

Although there is no goal in life per se, the way forward is to learn to live in joy and freedom. There are countless times I will be out in public and see a beautiful young child (usually no more than about 3 yrs old). I observe that innocent and curious young person and smile at how pure we are when young. Almost invariably, however, the parent will have that distracted stressed-out expression of one not fully present in the moment. It strikes me as unfortunate that the overwhelmed parent is missing the sight of wondrous joy on the face of their child.

Ultimately, finding our inner alignment is essential. We call it a ‘path’ because it is something we must practice daily. There is neither a quick fix nor one way to do it. At this time in my own life I am finding simplicity and creative solitude is what I need. That can change at any time. We must be attuned to the needs of the soul and respond accordingly.

The fog is still thick as I finish this article. A sweet little boy with curly hair digs into his croissant. That’s all he needs right now.
