West College Scotland Sport Careers Fair
On 7th February, in partnership with West College Scotland, we held a Sport and Fitness Careers Fair at Renfrew Leisure Centre. Over 300 students and school pupils attended the event which allowed them to speak with 14 employers about a variety of opportunities. In addition to this, participants took part in a number of challenges.

We would like to thank all those involved in organising this great event and supporting us on the day!

Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce Event

 
On 21st February, DYW West attended and spoke at the recent Dunbartonshire Chamber event at the new Our Lady & St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton. Headteacher Christopher Smith talked passionately to the business audience about the design and build of the school and then gave a personal tour. The school design offers a fantastic learning environment and replicates the latest school format that been built in other areas such as the new Barrhead High School.

Renfrew High Business Brunch

 
Well done to the school for their recent successful business brunch. DYW West and many employers attended, hearing about the successful pilot running between the school and intu Braehead, where pupils are organising an event at Soar. The school plans to establish similair projects with other employers.

Lego Robotics Event


On 7th February, WCS hosted a Tomorrow’s Engineers Lego Robotics Challenge Regional Heat. Pupils from across the West of Scotland competed across five areas including robot design and a speed challenge in order to be crowned regional champion. Well done to all those who participated and congratulations to those progressing on to the Final!
Gleniffer High School Event

Our Programme Director, Bob Davidson, recently supported the Planning for Choices event at Gleniffer High School. The event began with a carousel style opportunity for pupils to speak with a range of employers. Following this, pupils took part in a group challenge with the support of an industry expert to assist with this. The conclusion of the event was the opportunity for pupils to speak with additional employers at a careers event. Congratulations to Gleniffer High School for organising this great event! 
St Ninian's High School Career Fair

DYW West Director Bob Davidson attended the recent St Ninian’s Careers Fair and gave a talk on “Getting ready for the world of work”. Bob commented “this event is always very busy and this year was no exception. I was delighted to be invited back to give my talk where I provide Hints & Tips on CVs, application forms and interviews and insights into the skills employers look for and how pupils can evidence them. Our stall was very busy all night with pupils and parents stopping by with the most common discussions being apprenticeships and career paths.”

ESP Forth Valley Event

On 13th February, we were given the great opportunity to present at ESP Best Practice Day with West College Scotland. Cameron Munro from our West Dunbartonshire Greenpower team and Emma Gormley from our Renfrewshire Greenpower team also had the great opportunity to present to and discuss the programme with the Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Shirley-Anne Sommerville. Thank you to ESP for inviting us.

We would like to say a big thank you and farewell to a key member of the DYW West team, Nicola Dalrymple who joined us in 2016. Nicola's has been an amazing member of the team since the start and has been a key part in our journey of engaging with employers and inspiring young people. She leaves us to take her next steps in her career and we wish her all the best!
Scottish Apprenticeship Week 
6th March - 10th March 2017
 
As part of the Scottish Apprenticeship Week, DYW West worked with our partners to coordinate events for local young people to learn more about apprenticeships in a number of sectors across our region. Across the course of the week, over 400+ young people participated and learned more about career opportunities within the following organisations and industries;
  • Inverclyde Town Hall Modern Apprenticeship Job’s fair. A massive thank you to the 30+ industry organisations who put on inspiring and informative experiences informing Inverclyde’s young people the different career paths they can choose.
  • Site Tours from NHS, Rolls Royce and British Airways for Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Young Women to inspire them to choose career’s within the sectors.
  • Our Greenpower teams from West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire got the chance to visit Gary Paul Ferrari Edinburgh to get a tour of the workshops and the Showroom and hear from Mark their apprentice.
  • West College Scotland in partnership with Renfrewshire Council, as a part of International Women’s Day got to take part in various bricklaying and decorating workshops to enhance their skillsets.
The site tours mentioned above were delivered as part of International Woman’s Day and allowed nearly 100 young women the chance to gain behind the scenes access to local organisations across Renfrewshire. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the coordination of these events and to the organisations for giving their time to inspire the next generation!

Renfrewshire Recruit Challenge 2018
 
On 26th February, this years class of Recruit's from Renfrewshire took part in our DYW challenge. They created a poster to target young people showing the key skills that employers would look for when hiring and a video/radio advert that appeals to employers to help young people get ready for the world of work. Well done to all the Recruit's that took part!
Young Enterprise Regional Finals 2018
On the 15th of March, pupils from the Young Enterprise Renfrewshire Area took part in the Area Finals. They were judged on their display stands, business report, interview and presentation on the day.

Well done to all the companies that completed the YE Company Programme journey  and a huge congratulations to the St. Columba's Let's Do a Jig team who won 'Best Company Overall' and will be progressing on to the Scottish Finals at Hampden in June!
Skills Ambassador
 
A massive thank you to Ross Penman from I-Kick Martial Arts who delivered a number of sessions to Woodfarm High School as a Skills Ambassador. He got each of the pupils to create and deliver a 1 minute business pitch. This helped the pupils develop their transferable skills.

St. Stephen's High School in Inverclyde have just had their 6th & final Skills Ambassador mentoring session with our Director, Bob Davidson. The team concluded with a mock interview having had sessions on job searching, filling out applications, interview preparation & CV writing - Well done all!

West Dunbartonshire STEM Event

On 26th March we held our West Dunbartonshire STEM Engineering careers morning! Thanks to all who attended & industry organisations who put on hands on, inspiring experiences for 30+ pupils from five different high schools in West Dunbartonshire.

Greenpower F24

 
Our Greenpower teams have been very busy preparing for their upcoming race this year. Each team has been working hard to design their karts and raise funds.

A massive thank you to all the sponsors for supporting the teams!

Holiday Inn Express 6 Week Course

A huge thank you to the Holiday Inn Express for creating a 6 week training programme to train pupils from Inverclyde Academy, Notre Dame High School and St. Columba's High School to inspire them to choose a course within the hospitality industry and help prepare them for their future career paths.

The pupils researched, designed and implemented a new menu which is now being used in the hotel. A big well done to the pupils who took part!
