Alta's New Mobility Group led a workshop at Urbanism Next 2018 on "Scenario Planning for an Uncertain Future."  The conference included a network of thought leaders from the private sector, public sector, and academia to address topics on advances in technology. Would you like to receive the latest news from Alta's New Mobility Group? Sign up here to learn the latest on everything from e-bikes to parking strategies to autonomous technology.
 
The 2018 Ontario Good Roads Association Conference in Toronto brought together thousands of municipal and thought leaders to discuss strategies to build stronger and more prosperous communities. Alta's workshop on the FHWA Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks Guide put design guidelines for smaller communities into the Canadian context.

Alta is working with Urban Design 4 Health to inventory gaps and recommend improvements to strengthen the integration of health (physical, mental, and environmental health) in existing transportation policies, guidelines, and planning tools in Canada. Preliminary literature review findings and survey-beta test results will be presented to the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) in April. 
 
The Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation (IBPI) at Portland State University is offering its popular hands-on, multi-day summer workshops for active design. Alta professionals will be leading two of the workshops, including Integrating Bike-Ped Topics into University Transportation Courses and Creating Effective Active Transportation Programs. Scholarships are available and applications are due by April 6th.
 
The USDOT issued the Safety for All Users Report focusing on policies and programs that are proving to be effective in improving safety for all users of transportation networks and how to implement them to overcome barriers. The report considers the safety needs of all users, including pedestrians and bicyclists, and safe infrastructure approaches for all users.

Leadership Transition at Alta Planning + Design
After 20 years of leading Alta Planning + Design and helping grow the company from a small specialized bicycle and pedestrian transportation planning firm to a full-service, international planning, design, and engineering company, Michael Jones is stepping out of the role of CEO to explore new initiatives within the firm. Michael started the company in 1996 and oversaw its growth to over 200 staff in 30 offices in the ensuing 20 years. He will continue at Alta leading strategic business initiatives around the world. George Hudson, a landscape architect renowned for signature trail design, steps into the role of CEO; he has been with Alta for 18 years. George will be supported by Brett Hondorp as President. Brett has led some of the firm’s highest-profile bicycle, pedestrian and Safe Routes to School plans in his 17 years at Alta. Read the full press release here.

FHWA Issues New Interim Approval for Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons
It's important to understand the notable differences in design and operation in the new FHWA approval. Agencies will need to request permission again from FHWA in accordance with the new and modified terms. Learn more about the new Interim approval and what is means in Alta's memorandum.
