D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Boston U. & Virginia Tech. Click here to post your openings.
NCAA Prez Emmert during his annual media session before the MBB Final Four, "There needs to be the ability for a young person and his family to say, 'You know, what I really want to do is just become a professional ballplayer.' And they ought to be provided that opportunity if they don't want to go to college. […] That's a choice that needs to be there. But people fully understand that when you go into a collegiate environment, you're not doing that to become an employee of a university. And there is, as we said earlier, no interest in higher education of turning college athletes into employees that are hired and fired by universities." DI Board Chair & Minnesota Prez Kaler, "We are poised to act with efficiency and in a nimble and quick way. We understand the severity of the challenges that we face. We understand the urgency with which we need to act, to move forward rule changes that will be effective for the next season." (link, link); Emmert responded to questions about the Nassar saga at Michigan State, "...the NCAA and the Board of Governors in particular have been more engaged than any other higher education entity. In fact, we’re providing leadership to the rest of higher ed right now on trying to figure out how to deal with these issues in advance and prevent them, rather than just always coming in after the fact and imposing some kind of punishment or solutions afterwards." (link); Kaler also commented on MSU, "it's going to be a challenge for the institution for a long time." (link)
Louisiana Tech Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs Born is headed four hours south to Lamar as its new AD. Born: "(Louisiana Tech Athletics Director) Tommy McClelland spoke very highly of Lamar from his time in the Southland Conference. Lamar University has experienced a great deal of success in the past, and continues to be successful. The more research I did the more excited I became about this opportunity. I believe Lamar University has great potential." LU Prez Evans: "His vision for the complementary relationship between athletics and academics is particularly impressive. Mr. Born has a passion for the role athletics can and should play in enhancing the overall university for students, staff and/or faculty as well as the community at large." (link, link)
Longtime Charleston Southern AD Small will step down effective April 1 after a 17-year run of leading the Buccaneers. Small: "...in athletics, you never reflect or look back. It’s always about what’s next. I have not had one minute over the 17 years where I reflected on what has happened. I was always constantly looking ahead. All of my focus has been what do we need to do for our athletes. Thinking about how can we get better and how we can help our athletes complete at a higher level." Small also says the guarantee game universe, in both FB & MBB, helped fund the rest of the Bucs portfolio. Prez Hunter deeply grateful for Small's impact. The Post & Courier's Shelton believes former CSU Baseball HC Lake, who is currently an AC at South Carolina, is likely to go after the AD opening. VP for Business Affairs and Athletics Blackmon will serve as Interim AD. (link, link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner breakdowns the letter Cal Chancellor Christ sent to campus & alumni addressing Collegiate Sports Associates' 62-page analysis of the athletic department, its financial position & options for the future. Wilner indicates a new AD could be coming for the Golden Bears by the middle of next month, says there's been no decisions on sports cuts & the new AD will seemingly have a role in that decision-making process, the CSA report notes decreasing the sport portfolio from 30 programs to 16 would save $8M annually, sell naming rights to increase revenues, plat neutral site FB matchups to do the same & general campus community feedback of reducing sports to improve fiscal sustainability. More. (link); Christ, in an interview, "...one of my goals as chancellor is to have, not just in athletics but generally for the whole campus, a more integrated and holistic approach to philanthropy. Most of our donors have multiple interests within the institution so it's important to work with those donors with a vision of where the campus is going -in the whole and as an integrated way." Christ also says one of the first tasks for the new AD will be a fresh strategic plan, calls the candidate pool "deep and rich." (link); Here's Christ's full letter to campus. (link); Here's the full CSA report. (link)
Missouri AD Sterk says he'll continue to invest in the Tigers' infrastructure, even with annual expense increases of eight- to ten-percent. On the latter front, Sterk won't rehire a Deputy AD for External Relations to replace new Florida Atlantic AD White, but instead will divvy out White's responsibilities to other senior leaders. Sterk points to increased FB season tix sales, wants the squad to get off to a quick start to leverage last season's late success, also declines to clarify where his defamation suit with South Carolina WBB HC Staley stands & does not believe a teardown & replacement of the Hearnes Center is in the cards right now. (link, link)
"I think it’d be seen as a favorable move because they would certainly make our conference stronger in terms of basketball. You could imagine the conference tournament and what Gonzaga would bring to that experience and certainly the regular-season matchups for all of our conference members would make for a pretty entertaining basketball league. You talk about the strength of San Diego State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, Boise State and throw Gonzaga in there, that’s a deep and talented and tough conference." That's Nevada AD Knuth on the possibility of the Mountain West adding Gonzaga. Knuth also indicates the league's goal on MBB scheduling is to get six to seven programs back into the Top 100 of the RPI with the rest within the Top 150, "...so, then every game you play is meaningful because it’s a top-100 RPI game or if you have some top-50 teams, you’re getting top-50 road wins and that makes a big, big difference." (link)
Eastern Michigan brass respond to a list of demands from students on how to right-size the university's budget. On the topic of moving the Eagles athletic portfolio to the Horizon or GLIAC (DII), "Changing conference affiliation would impact every sport at EMU. Our student-athletes and coaches chose EMU for the fact that they wanted to be part of a Division I FBS athletic department and compete against other premier athletic programs. In addition to losing substantial revenues tied to game guarantees, NCAA & conference payments, and sponsorships, leaving the MAC would require up-front payments in excess of $10 million to, among other things, exit the MAC and cancel future football game guarantee contracts with other schools. The process to be invited to join a new conference – if invited to do so – would require additional up-front payments." The response also clearly states EMU isn't exiting the MAC. (link)
The rest of the Missouri Valley Conference will be thanking Loyola-Chicago for years to come as its Final Four run will push an additional ~$140K to each institution for the next six years, a figure that's more than members get annually from the league's TV deals. Evansville AD Spencer: "It’s transformational. It’s a revenue stream for us to build our entire budget on, and maybe even make some one-time capital improvements that wouldn’t have been possible without it." Spencer also points to "big financial swings" if NCAA Tourney units aren't replaced with more over the years. Southern Illinois boss Bell indicates "confidence in long term planning" & MVC Commish Elgin believes the reputational value to his cohort is even greater than the cash. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd reviews NCAA Prez Emmert's time with the media yesterday & in the process gets comments from Big 12 Commish Bowlsby who says he's "hearing more discussion that ever" on the interest in third-party investigations. The BIG EAST recommended such a step in its overhaul proposal as Commish Ackerman notes, "It's clear what they have now may not be enough to keep up with 351 Division I schools." Overall, Dodd believes the NCAA may have to let go of its grip on student-athletes not monetizing their name, image & likeness to create any real change. More.  (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Kansas MBB student-athlete Azubuike may get to see his mother for the first time in six years if the travel gods align to get her from Delta, Nigeria to San Antonio in time for tomorrow night's Final Four tip with Villanova. Azubuike says his mother has never seen him play before, "She doesn't know anything about basketball. She doesn't really understand it. It'll be fun for her to see me play." Jayhawks HC Self: "The NCAA, for all the stuff (grief) they catch, they passed a rule a few years ago that allowed families to get to events. And his wasn’t easy to get here because we had to go through political people to deal with their embassy in Nigeria for the passport, but also to set up a meeting to get a visa, and she had to fly I don’t know how many hours just to get to the city where she had the visa meeting this morning at 9 a.m. to get the visa. Then try to get her on flights, which will take over 24 hours to get her here. It will be worth it. Can you imagine, you’ve never seen your son play basketball and the first time you do it is in front of 70,000 people at this thing? I can’t even imagine what’s going to be going through her mind." (link)

Saint Mary's Assoc. AD for Compliance Shrieve-Hawkins named the new boss at San Francisco State (DII). SF State Prez Wong says Shrieve-Hawkins is "uniquely suited" to lead the Gators & university assistant professor Bolter, who co-chaired the search committee adds, "Stephanie's philosophy for the student-athlete experience fits quite well with the mission of a DII program such as ours. She is well-positioned to genuinely understand and enhance the experiences of our student-athletes."  (link)
The Las Vegas Sun's Grimala wonders how the exit of UNLV Prez Jessup, an ardent athletics supporter, will impact momentum for the Rebels. Among a list of goals, Jessup's most notable marker for athletics was to eventually gain membership into a 'Power 5' conference. Grimala: "Whoever assumes the job next will have to survey the landscape and assess where the Rebels stand with their revenue-generating sports. The men's basketball and football programs have struggled in recent years, and both are coached by holdovers of the previous administration. […] Jessup was an advocate for college athletics. There's no guarantee his successor will share his passion for developing UNLV's sports programs. For that reason alone, the Rebels are heading into the unknown under the leadership of a new president." (link)
2D Consulting's Durham chats with Advent CEO Roberson on the critical importance of storytelling for brands in college athletics. Of note from Roberson, "I don’t think it’s about new and bigger buildings….more important than scale of building is impact of story. […] People in athletics can make a bigger impact by making a modest investment in more accurately telling the story in their space than raising a bunch of money to build a new facility. […] You don’t have to be a 'Power 5' competitor to tell a story about the things that make your program unique and important. […] Young people today have been in front of cameras their whole lives, so they see themselves in their own documentary." More. (link)
Super compelling read on recently exited Virginia WBB HC Boyle, who stepped down to attend to family matters related to her six year-old daughter who is originally from Senegal. Boyle has to return to the African nation to finalize the adoption process & there's no exact indication on how long it could take, be it days, weeks or even years. Boyle: "She’s six. Putting her on a plane by herself is not an option. Me stepping down from my job was the only option. It’s disruptive, but I’m going to do what I need to do." (link)
The Athletic's Vannini gets feedback from the FB HC marketplace on how the new prospective student-athlete early visit framework has been received. Duke's Cutcliffe notes he moved back Spring ball this year to make sure prep visitors "have more of a real visit." Temple's Collins: "I know people are starting to set those up now, and I’m still kind of on the fence. I don’t think we’re gonna do the early officials here. That might change the closer we get. But the early signing period was huge for us. We found 25 kids in the early signing period, which is ridiculous." Notre Dame Recruiting Coordinator Polian says he, Fighting Irish boss Kelly & others designed specific criteria to determine which, if any, recruits can visit early. More. (link)

Texas AD Del Conte and Big 12 Commish Bowlsby headlined the panel at the Intercollegiate Athletics Media Symposium hosted by UT's Center for Sports Communication and Media yesterday. Asked if student-athletes should be paid, Del Conte responded, "For me, I'm against all of it. Only 1 or 2 percent of our athletes go pro ... The rest of them have a chance to get to change their life through education." Bowlsby: "I really don’t believe that college athletics is either professional or amateur. The co-curricular, higher education model only exists in the United States. It’s really its own model. … It isn’t professional, certainly, because the compensation is tied and tethered to the cost of education." BIG EAST Commish Ackerman supports the "none and two" idea for MBB and Alabama AD Byrne points to the value student-athletes receive from charter flights vs. bus rides, the quality and quantity of food provided, the level of coaching and more. (link)
New Digs: Oklahoma State makes it official, a new baseball stadium will seat between 3,500-8,000, have a playground area in the outfield plaza for families, a dedicated student section, 2K square-foot video board and more. Pokes AD Holder: "The stadium will be a physical manifestation of Oklahoma State University’s commitment to excellence in baseball. Thank you to Boone Pickens for buying the 100 acres that has become the athletic village and for sharing the belief that every student athlete and every coach deserves an opportunity to compete at the highest level. The tradition of OSU baseball plus the leadership of Josh Holliday and Rob Walton gave life to the fundraising campaign. Thank you to all the generous donors who have made this dream a reality. This is a special day for our baseball program. A day to pay homage to the past, dream big about the future, and realize that all things are possible at OSU." Manhattan Construction Company will build it. Nice webpage dedicated to the project with lots of renderings. (link); Florida FB HC Mullen wants to visit Google headquarters for ideas for the Gators' new $65M, 130K square foot FB complex. (link); Temple released more details about its proposed FB stadium, which would be built 25 feet below sidewalk level to keep it from being taller than neighboring rowhouses, as the local community continues to pushback on the plans. Goal for the 35K-seat stadium is for the 20-24 months of construction for the U-shaped structure to start in June. Vehicle entrances under ground are among other features the school has proposed to satisfy the neighbors. Renderings included. (link); Morehead State will name its new campus beach volleyball facility Fazoli's Breadstick Beach. The first-ever NCAA beach volleyball match in the state of Kentucky will take place there on Monday. Three courts, a large viewing area, rinse shower and more. (link); AL.com's Goodman thinks the new stadium is the only way UAB FB would survive. Here is this from AD Ingram: "There is a little bit of a ceiling on where we can go because we're not going to be invited into the College Football Playoff, but doing what Central Florida did is what we want to do." (link)
Not a new stadium, but Forbes' Dosh expects Texas to overhaul a number of facility elements at Daryl K. Royal Memorial Stadium with AD Del Conte now in the fold. Dosh reviews a number of spaces within the venue that are in need of some love, a process that really started under former Longhorns AD Perrin. Dosh points to areas with little graphics or branding & plain white cinder block walls that she says "remind me of a grade school." Del Conte: "...we need to always be looking at enhancing it. We need to improve the areas for our student-athletes, and provide the fan technology and event areas that help encourage them to come to the game instead of watching from home." (link)
"The Mississippi Supreme Court denied the petitions for interlocutory appeals for venue and severance, filed by the attorneys of Mississippi State's Leo Lewis and Kobe Jones, in the Rebel Rags lawsuit Thursday." Translation: The Rebel Rags case will move forward in Lafayette County, where the outlet store is based. Attorneys for Lewis and Jones voice their disagreement with the court's decision and say they will move to transfer venue again in the future on other grounds. (link); Former Arizona Track & Field AC Carter did not testify in his defense and closing arguments in his trial should wrap up today. The state has now spent more than $1M on Carter's defense because he was a UA employee when the civil suit against him was filed. (link)
Darius Bazley is decommitting from Syracuse to play in the G League in his first year out of high school, a move his mother calls, "History in the making, and this could open up the doors for so many people behind him." The Ringer's Samman breaks it down: "Any G League team that drafts him won’t own his rights until he becomes eligible for the NBA Draft, and once he turns 19 and declares, the team will lose all ownership rights to him. Because he can’t be called up to the next level, and doesn’t seem to be the kind of immediate, professional-level contributor that his peers will be, there may be little incentive for his future G League team to help him develop and give him minutes over players they have under long-term contract. The G League also can’t match the salary that Jennings, Mudiay, and Ferguson earned overseas, but can offer Bazley the ability to train with NBA-caliber athletes without having to adjust to a new country. Salaries in the American minor league range from $75,000 to $275,000 per year, but that’s still plenty more than what is offered by the NCAA." (link)
Also Noticed: Texas AD Del Conte on the Columbus Crew SC potentially playing its season in Austin, where two UT venues fit the bill: "There’s no added value there. Our facilities are for the University of Texas. There’s no added value of having someone else use those. There’s added value to the community, but there’s no added value for the University of Texas. There’s wear and tear." (link); S&P Global Ratings revised the rating outlook for Michigan State from stable to negative as the "school faces mounting scrutiny and financial obligations" from the Nassar fallout. (link); Michigan cancels the previously scheduled FB home-and-home with Virginia Tech and will pay the Hokies $375K to get out of the 2020 and 2021 commitments. Arkansas State will instead visit the Big House in 2020 and the Wolverine's home-and-home with Washington is still on the books for 2020 and 2021. (link); Under Armour says 150M MyFitnessPal accounts were compromised in a data break, with hackers getting user names, email addresses and hashed passwords, but not financial information. Shares dipped 4% in after-hours trading after the announcement. Good HBR read from Michigan professor Dunning & Cornell PhD student Sanchez, "Research: Learning a Little About Something Makes Us Overconfident." Thesis: "...our studies suggest that the work of a beginner might be doubly hard. Of course, the beginner must struggle to learn — but the beginner must also guard against an illusion they have learned too quickly. Perhaps Alexander Pope suggested the best remedy for this beginner’s bubble when he said that if a few shallow draughts of experience intoxicate the brain, the only cure was to continue drinking until we are sober again." The "Beginners Bubble" described in detail with applications in college athletics connected to the growth of student-athletes to the oversight of new departments and/or personnel for even the most seasoned administrators. (link)
