ELCA Presiding Bishop's Easter Message
It all started with such promise – the angel announcing to Mary that the child she would bear would be called Son of the Most High; the conviction of Mary that this child would be the embodiment of God’s promised justice, that the hungry would be filled with good things and the rich sent away empty; angels announcing his birth; thousands being fed; the sick healed; the dead raised.

And then, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” It was over. The world hadn’t changed. Might still made right. How ridiculously naïve to believe that any reversal of the old order could come about. Hope is for the gullible. Looking at this broken man hanging utterly helpless, naked and broken on a cross, the powers and principalities, earthly and spiritual, death and the devil must have said, “You fool.”

This, as St. Paul reminds us, is the wisdom of the world. And the world can present plenty of hard evidence that it is right: children killing children in horrific school shootings, 60 million displaced people – all of this supported by our rebellion against God, our idolatrous claim that we are in control and the world is ours. In the face of this and all of the suffering others cause and we cause others, we, too, might cry out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

I believe that the beginning of Psalm 22 expresses the anguish of the psalmist and the anguish of our Lord, but there is more going on here. Citing the first words of a text was, in the tradition of the time, a way of identifying an entire passage. The psalm ends this way: “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. … Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.” This is the wisdom of God. Jesus’ crucifixion is the death of our death. His innocent suffering has reconciled all of creation to God. He has done it. We stake our lives on this.

This year, Easter falls on April 1. We shall have come through the Lenten desert to the Easter garden. We shall say, “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!” And we shall confess this and live this in the face of worldly wisdom that is based on death. Life wins. Love wins. And if the world wants to call us April fools, we are glad to claim that title.

ELCA Presiding Bishop
Mission of the Month
OUR MISSION OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL:  FAMILY PROMISE

We will be collecting money for the purchase of needed computer equipment and software for the Family Promise Day Center, where the guests spend much of their days. These items are necessary to help the guests with their search for jobs, housing and additional needs, as well as to help the staff run the day center efficiently and provide the best possible assistance to the guests.

On another note, an exciting decision has been made to actually host the families here at Church of the Resurrection! Our first host week will be May 20 through 26. We will offer training right here at COR on Sunday, April 15, at 11:30 AM.  The training will take about two hours, and lunch will be served. I hope you will consider helping with this important mission. There is a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center for the training.

As a host church, we will also need some supplies for our guests. A sign-up for those items will also be available soon at the Welcome Center.

Please contact me at 262-894-2639 or lkdischer@gmail.com with any questions.

APRIL LAY MINISTRY SIGNUP

The sign up genius self sign up for Lay Ministry is working great.  A lot of the assignments are being filled this way and it results in far fewer schedule conflicts.  Any openings that are not selected are still assigned as in the past.  If you know you have a conflict for particular dates, let the office know so you are not scheduled.

To take advantage of this new method, click on the link below to sign up for Lay Ministry slots in April.

Save the date—

APRIL 8 is Holy Humor Sunday!

The joy doesn’t end on Easter Sunday. In fact, for Christians, it’s just the beginning! This year, we’re bringing an ancient (but new to COR) tradition to our congregation. Holy Humor Sunday will be held on Sunday, April 8—the first Sunday after Easter.

More than just a day of light-hearted fun, the day has a solid theological and historical background. After all, what can we do but celebrate when the One who once was dead has risen from the grave to live eternally?!!

What’s YOUR part on this day?

•    Be here—the more, the merrier! (Really—the more people, the more fun!!!)
•    Be ready to participate fully!
•    Dress up in something silly! Do you have an old Halloween costume lying around? A Hawaiian shirt and/or grass skirt? Wear your pajamas! Be mismatched, backward, inside out! Crazy wig in your closet? Swim fins and a snorkel? Wear ‘em to church!
•    If you wish, bring a (church-rated) joke or two to share with everyone—we’ll have a few minutes of ‘open mic’ time for this.
•    Arrive happily. Leave joyfully.

*Yay! You can sleep in your own bed!

VOTING MEMBERS are needed to represent
Church of the Resurrection.

In addition to our Rostered Leaders (Pastor Kim and Deacon Susan Daniels), we need to send two voting members (formerly called delegates) to represent our congregation as a part of the Greater Milwaukee Synod. If possible, we would like to send one man and one woman as our voting members.

At the GMS Assembly, you will hear inspiring, interesting speakers, enjoy lively worship, meet and get to know folks from other GMS churches, learn about the work of our congregations, the GMS and the ELCA, and participate in the ‘work’ of the church as it hears, discusses, tweaks and votes on various resolutions and policy items.

Please prayerfully consider serving our congregation and the GMS as a voting member at Assembly. You will find it to be an interesting and fulfilling experience.

COR will pay for your registration costs. Deadline to apply is April 25.

Please speak to Pastor Kim ASAP if you are interested.

Help us pay for VBS
We would like to make Vacation Bible School free for all children. Can you help us?

There is a display in the narthex with 17 envelopes, each with dollar amounts ranging from $5 to $100. Would you be willing to take an envelope, fill it with cash or a check, and place it in the office or offering plate? The money — a total of $540 — will cover fees for the children who attend VBS 2018: Splash Canyon.

Please make your checks out to “Church of the Resurrection” and write “VBS” in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity!
