Here's the quick version:

The City has a survey which takes less than 5 minutes, and we need to you complete it before the survey closes tomorrow (March 31st).

Here's the slightly longer version:

At a meeting yesterday we learned that there have only been 60 responses to this survey.

With low numbers like this it's very easy for the City to continue to prioritize cars above all other modes of transport.
In the worst case this can lead to situations like the backlash against the Missouri Avenue plans, which ultimately led to the City abandoning the project entirely.

The full story:

We attended the March Citizens Transportation Commission Meeting, where a Bike Plan Update was presented by Street Transportation Department Deputy Director Mark Melnychenko.
The bulk of the update concerned the current draft of the Five-Year Bicycle Program. The department has been soliciting feedback and
a finalized plan will be presented to the Citizens Transportation Commission later this year.
The Commission had varied opinions on the City's plans, notably:
  • They had concerns that there wasn't enough information on when buffered and protected lanes are required.
  • That the projects were taking a long time, specifically to deliver more protected bike lanes.
  • One commission member stated that the number of bicycle users in Phoenix is "minuscule, even in comparison to the tiny fraction of people who use light rail", and questioned why time and money was being spent on their needs.
We will be taking steps to reach out to commission members to address and clarify these points.

The meetings are public, with the next one taking place April 26th, perhaps we'll see you there?

A special treat

Tomorrow is also the deadline to join our team for the Valley Bike month Challenge. It's free, and the winning team in each size category gets a victory party hosted by a local venue. Register at sharetheride.com and find the Phoenix Spokes People team under the Commuter Challenge section.
We'll be back in a few days with our regular monthly email.
