Welcome to the March 2018 issue of MathsThroughStories.org newsletter!

To those colleagues who celebrate Easter this Sunday, we wish you a very Happy Easter! We hope you find time to rest and switch off ... but not until you finish reading our newsletter, of course! :-)

In this issue, you will have free access to our exclusive interview with Stuart J. Murphy, the world's most prolific and best-selling mathematical story author. Stuart has single-handedly authored 63 mathematical stories as part of his MathStart series (published by HarperCollins). We have reviewed some of his books, and our partner, KidTime StoryTime, has also created videos of them reading some of Stuart's mathematical stories. You will find the links to all of these below.

In our popular Mathematical Stories Recommendations section, we highlight some new and some classic mathematical story picture books covering a wide range of concepts, ranging from skip counting to ordinal numbers and multiplication. We hope you will find our recommendations useful.

In the Recent and Upcoming Training Workshops section, you will find photos and feedback from participants who recently attended Maths Through Stories workshops, as well as details of our upcoming workshops.

In the Teachers' Donation Campaigns section, you will find details of donation campaigns of teachers who are truly passionate in using stories to enhance their children's mathematical understanding and love for the subject. They would greatly value your support to help them buy mathematical story picture books for their class.

Finally, if you know any teachers, teacher trainees or parents who might be interested in what we do, please encourage them to sign up to our monthly newsletter
here :-)

P.S. Please note that some e-mail service providers (like Gmail) only display the first 2-3 sections of our newsletter and omit the remaining sections with the following message at the bottom of the e-mail: '[Message clipped] View entire message'. To view the newsletter in full, either click the said 'View entire message' text or click the 'View this email in your browser' text at the top of the newsletter.

TRAINING WORKSHOPS

This month, Dr. Trakulphadetkrai (founder of MathsThroughStories.org) ran a training workshop for 120+ teacher trainees at the University of Brighton (UK). Below you will find photos from this event and feedback from some of the participants.

Details of other previous training workshops can be found here.

Vince gave a really engaging 2 hour session that inspired and enthused our final year students on the BA Primary QTS course. In spite of being in a lecture theatre, the session was practical; Vince provided each student (and there were over 120) with a story book to support discussion and the students were able to co-construct lesson ideas based on these. In addition to being a practical session, all of Vince’s input had strong theoretical foundations. These supported the students to evaluate texts critically based on the quality of the story, the connection with the underpinning mathematical concepts and the opportunities for promoting social inclusion. This session is highly recommended.

Really great. Very well structured. Good activities and opportunities to discuss and share. Very approachable and friendly speaker – people not scared to share. Well done for keeping everyone engaged for so long!

Very good and eye opening. I had misconceptions about the use of stories in mathematics teaching at the beginning of the session that were erased by the end.

Fantastic! Lots of great ideas – inspiring me to use story books in maths. Dynamic trainer – thank you, Vincent! ” “Very informative and interesting. Interactive. Thanks for giving lots of good lesson content ideas. I feel like now I’ll be able to use storybooks in maths teaching to develop children’s reasoning.

Very thorough and informative. Interesting to learn about cross curricular links for the core subjects. Enthusiastic guest speaker made it engaging.

UPCOMING MATHS THROUGH STORY
TRAINING WORKSHOPS
Dr. Trakulphadetkrai has recently been invited by UK's Derbyshire County Council to help put together a whole-day Maths Through Stories CPD event for teachers across Derbyshire and beyond. He will join forces with Edward Einhorn (New York / London), the author of 'A Very Improbable Story' and 'Fractions in Disguise', at this event. If you teach in the UK and are interested in attending this event, you can book your place here: http://www.services.derbyshire.gov.uk/Event/69206

Details of Dr. Trakulphadetkrai's other upcoming workshops can be found here

If your school, local educational authority or university-based teacher education programme (both within and outside the UK) is interested in receiving training from Dr. Trakulphadetkrai at your institution, please get in touch with him directly here.
