April Flowers...

Yes, we know.  It's "April showers bring May flowers", but this year our flowers are coming in April — and on silk!  You too can enjoy April flowers by coming to our next meeting.  Accomplished local artist and Society member, Jamie Kirkell, will present "Floral Painting On Silk".  Visit Jamie's website for a tantalizing preview of what's possible with this interesting and unusual art form.

Meeting Details:  Tuesday, April 3, 2018, 7:00 pm, in the clubhouse of the Sarasota Garden Club.  [ map ]  There'll be edibles by Gail E. and drinks by Bruce C., with socializing and a fun plants raffle following the presentation.  Non-member friends and guests are always welcomed at all Society meetings and events.

Scholarships...

We are now accepting applications to receive one of our annually awarded college scholarships.  If someone you know is a local college student in need of financial assistance, please ask them to visit our Scholarships Page for details and a downloadable application.  Tell them to not put it off...  the submission deadline is April 10th.

Tent Sale...

Cacti and succulent aficianado Mitch Kessler has announced this year's editon of his annual tent sale.  It will be on the grounds of Bearss Groves, in Tampa, on the weekend of April 21 and 22, from 9 am to 4 pm on both days, rain or shine. The address is 14316 Lake Magdalene Blvd., Tampa. [ Here's a map. ]

Mitch's flyer says items for sale will include "hundreds of cacti and succulents, a huge assortment of dessert roses, specimen collector plants", and many gardening accessories, such as special soil for cacti and succulents, clay pots, fertilizer, and decorative gravel.

No-Tent Sale...

If you go to the Tampa sale, you may want to buy in moderation, because we have one of our own annual sales (minus the tent) coming up in May.  Our Mothers Day Weekend Sale will fall on Saturday, May 12th, this year.  We'll have more to say about it in our May 6th newsletter.  Sorry, the big sale is "on", as usual, but there'll be no Mothers Day Tea again this year.

Groups Are Good...

This past week a botanical illustration class from The Ringling College of Art and Design spent time in the gardens drawing plants throughout the grounds and in our collection greenhouse.  We are always happy to host events like that.  If you would like to visit our Gardens as part of a small educational and/or arts related group, please let us know:  Send us an email.

Sales...

Every year we hold four big public sales in our gardens, 1310 38th St, Sarasota.  [ map ]  Join us on Memorial Day, Labor Day, the Saturday before Presidents Day, and the Saturday before Mother's Day.  All plant sale proceeds are used to support our all-volunteer organization and to fund our charitable operations.  For more information, please visit our Sales page.

Open Gardens...

Do you enjoy gardening and socializing with like minded people?  Yes?  Then please join us on one of our "Open Gardens" days!  In addition to our four big annual sales, we also have casual sales and hands-on gardening sessions that are open to the public almost every Monday, from 9 to noon, all year 'round, and on the third Saturday of nearly every month, also from 9 to noon.

Please note that occasionally an Open Gardens work session may be canceled without public notice, due to weather conditions or when all of our volunteers have other obligations.  It's rare, but it can happen, so if you will be traveling from outside the Sarasota area, we recommend making arrangements in advance when planning to visit the Gardens on one of our work days.

Volunteers...

Please consider periodically volunteering a small amount of your time to help us maintain our Collections and the Gardens.  No experience is needed!  Just tell us beforehand [ here ] which day would be best for you to start.  Then, after you've received confirmation that someone will be on hand to greet you, come to the Gardens wearing your favorite gardening clothes.  Add sun protection and bug repellent if you feel the need.  That's it!  You will be welcomed into our friendly family of "Gardens Guardians" and you will be matched to a fun gardening project that suits your interests and abilities.  After that you'll be free to work in the Gardens as often as you like.

To contact us for more information, please use this page on our website.

Scholarships...

Every spring we grant financial aid scholarships to one or more deserving local students.  Applicants may be local college students or local senior high school students enrolled in college.  An application form and complete instructions are available on our Scholarships page.

Meetings...

Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, October, November, and January thru June, at 7:00 pm, in the clubhouse of the Sarasota Garden Club, 1131 Blvd of the Arts, Sarasota.  [ map ]  In July, August, and September we temporarily suspend our regular monthly meetings and, in December, we hold our meeting in our Gardens.  Please visit the Meetings page on our website for more details.
