This Spring:

And the project funding awards go to ...

The hotly-awaited results of the £eith Chooses event were announced on 21 March in the Leith Community Centre after a short talk by Oliver Escobar (Citizens Participation Network). 67 valid applications for funding were received (an all-time high!), which just goes to show how many dynamic organisations and individuals and exciting new ideas there are in Leith. The community voted for its favourite projects by in-person card voting at the Kirkgate Community Centre on 3rd March, and online voting between 3rd and 17th March.

Dr Oliver Escobar in his talk said that Leith was an early adopter in what has now become a worldwide wave of #ParticipatoryBudgeting processes, giving local communities a voice in how public money is spent. The £EITH Chooses project will distribute £118,000 to the community in Leith in many and varied ways, through the energy, work and commitment of all the great project teams taking part.

See the full list of winning projects in the 'Small', 'Medium' and 'Large' categories at www.leithchooses.net

One of the successful applications was from Projekt 42, based in the Kirkgate Centre.

The City of Edinburgh Council approved the outline business case for taking Edinburgh Trams to Leith and Newhaven in November last year. Early plans have now been developed for how and when the new tramline would be built, should the project be approved by Council in Summer/Autumn this year. The proposed new line will run for 4.69 km (2.91 miles), connecting Leith and Newhaven to the current end of the Edinburgh tram line at York Place. The look and feel of the stops, overhead lines and general design principles will be similar to those used in the current line.

A dedicated website with details of the project timeline, tram route and stops together with landscape and traffic management proposals has been set up.

A number of public information events are being held in April which we encourage you to attend:

  • Tuesday 3 April: McDonald Road Library, 10am–4pm
  • Thursday 12 April: Leith Community Education Centre, 3–9pm
  • Saturday 21 April: Ocean Terminal, 12–5pm.

Please note that the Public consultation will end on  29 April 2018 – make sure you have your say!
