"...After about a month and a half into recovery, I noticed that my healing process wasn’t going as planned because I hadn’t been able to gain a natural erection. Worried, I went back to the doctor and he then told me there was a lot of tissue damage that occurred from that  episode of priapism. I had read about priapism, but didn’t know it could cause so much damage. I was told right then and there that I would never be able to have a natural erection again.

I was devastated. I immediately imagined the worst. No female would ever understand my situation and I would spend my life alone. I felt like less of a man and spent many moments completely lost. I always envisioned myself dating in the future and if I found the right girl, I would marry her. I began to feel depressed and felt completely singled out. I asked myself, “Why is this happening to me?”

I convinced myself that I could not give up and accept my new circumstances. I found a Urologist that was willing to work with me. Ultimately, he gave me the option for..."

Pain Sensitivity Caused by Your Pain Medications - What is Hyperalgesia?

The long-term use of opioids may result in a condition called Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia (OIH). From Greek origins, hyperalgesia means "over" and "pain" or medically it is used to describe an increased sensitivity to pain. There are many studies that provide evidence that supports OIH as a real clinical issue that may affect patients living with sickle cell disease who use opioids or narcotics for pain management.

In hyperalgesia the body systems that respond to opioids to provide pain relief are thought to change over time in a way that actually enhances pain when taken. This pain is hard to pinpoint and is described as generalized, hard to define pain. It occurs even when opioid doses are increased.

We are done with our first quarter and are officially warmed up for the year. Here are the projects and programs we are working on this year.

Social Media Education & Campaigns: Educational and awareness posts and campaigns on social media that cover a variety of sickle cell related topics.
SC101 INTL: Educational material in other languages through web-based platforms (i.e. social media platforms, Facebook Instagram, Twitter and YouTube) and print. 

Sickle Cell Smart: Creating and providing simplified literature geared towards a broad audience for various sickle cell populations. This literature will be infographic style with simple graphics and information for maximum comprehension.

Sickle Cell Community Education: Hosting educational booths around the SF Bay Area and regionally in a variety of settings including: local festivals, schools, markets, etc. and providing booth visitors with first hand knowledge and material on SCD, SCT and other relevant information.
The Sickle Cell Advocates of the Year Awards
It's not too late to send in a nomination for the 5th annual Sickle Cell Advocates of the Year Awards.

Nominate for your favorite advocate, doctor, or any other person who doing great work within the sickle cell community.

We are honoring four advocates in these categories this year:
  1. National Advocate (U.S. nominee's only)
  2. International Advocate (nominees outside of the U.S.)
  3. Healthcare Provider Advocate (doctors, nurses, social workers)
  4. Community Advocate (elected by the sickle cell community by majority nominations)
We will be accepting nominations until Friday, March 30, so be sure to send yours in here.
