Highlights

6 Year Anniversary of energypedia

In April 2018, energypedia will complete its 6 glorious years of knowledge sharing and mutual learning! Since 2012 when we first started working, we have come a long way. With each passing year our knowledge base and our impact has grown bigger. Today, our community has over 8,300 energy experts who have contributed to over 4,200 quality articles on energypedia. A big thank you to all our donors, supporters and users who have been a constant pillar of support and encouragement in our journey. We are looking forward to your contributions to energypedia also in the coming years!
Stay tuned for our upcoming projects, including two new information portals and other new tools. Also, don’t forget to tell your colleagues about energypedia.

Meet Us in Kathmandu and Rome

Our colleague Ranisha Basnet will be attending the 5th International Conference on Developments in Renewable Energy Technology 2018 (ICDRET 2018) and the International Forum on Solar Technologies for Small-scale Agriculture and Water Management in Kathmandu and Rome respectively.
ICDRET 2018 will bring together academics, researchers, engineers and industry experts involved in multiple disciplines of Renewable Energy Technologies.
The International Forum on Solar Technologies for Small-scale Agriculture and Water Management will bring together key stakeholders from the water, energy, agriculture and rural development sectors, to discuss about solar technologies in small-scale agriculture and water management.

Energy for Displaced People – Join the Working Groups and Contribute to a Global Plan of Action

The Energy for Displaced People conference was held in January 2018 to initiate the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy Solutions in Situations of Displacement (GPA). The five working groups under the GPA include: Planning and Coordination; Policy, Advocacy and Host Country Resilience; Innovative Finance; Technical Expertise, Capacity Building and Training; Data, Monitoring, Evidence and Reporting. To join any of the working groups or to receive updates on the GPA, please contact energy@unitar.org
The GIZ in Berlin hosted the conference through the support of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. The conference summary, outcome documents as well as background papers are now available on energypedia.

Kasese (Uganda) Commits to 100% Renewable Energy

Kasese district in Uganda has committed to 100% renewable energy by 2020. This transition to renewable energy will decrease the uncontrolled use of charcoal, firewood and kerosene, which are the main energy sources so far. The distinct plan of implementation is laid out in the Renewable Energy Strategy, which runs from 2013- 2020. Read more...

Colombia Cuts Import Taxes on Improved Cookstoves

The Colombian Government has approved a VAT exemption on improved cookstoves. In the past there was a 19% VAT on all cookstoves.  This move will help to create a market for improved cookstoves and also benefit the poor population in rural Columbia. Read more…

10,000 Mini-Grids in Nigeria

The Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is gearing up to roll out 10,000 mini-grids to support rural electrification in Nigeria. This announcement came during the three-day mini-grid charrette in Lagos State. Read more…

Kerosene Lanterns to Phase Out in Ghana

The Ghanaian Government will deploy a total of 2 million solar lanterns in rural Ghana for the next 12 years. This is part of the measures to phase out the use of kerosene lanterns. Ghana will also implement a number of solar energy projects by 2030 to show its commitment to the Paris Agreement. Read more…

1 Million Solar Study Lamps Distributed in India

The Indian Government has distributed one million solar study lamps under the “Solar Study Lamp Scheme”. These lamps were distributed in three states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The scheme was approved in 2014. Read more…

Conference: Comprehensive Energy Planning in Critical Settings from Emergency to Development

The conference will focus on the main challenges and the need of integrated approaches for an efficient management of energy and other resources in critical settings, from emergency towards development. It is the final event of the SET4food project (Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Security in humanitarian contexts, www.set4food.org) funded by the European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), and hosted by Politecnico di Milano and COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale. The conference will be held on 12th April 2018 in the main campus of Politecnico di Milano. Participation is free, but places are limited. Pre-register here: bit.ly/set4foodconf. Powering Last-Mile Connectivity

Lack of reliable power supply forces mobile network operators in developing countries to spend around USD 3.8 billion dollars annually on diesel fuel. Similarly, for consumers in rural areas, charging their smart phones is costly and time-consuming. Therefore, partnerships between mobile network operators and energy companies can help to drive internet access and electrification for billions of people.
