Greetings, Everyone!
I hope 2018 is off to a fantastic start for all of you. It's been a while since I've sent out a newsletter, but I've been busy at work. I'm finishing up my first year of graduate school at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, where I'm getting a Master of Music in Jazz Studies.
I'm excited to announce a new project I've been working on for the past few months, presenting the music of pianist, composer and vocalist, Lil Hardin Armstrong. She is a musician I have admired for many years, but didn't know much about until I took a class on the history of Louis Armstrong in the fall with Ricky Riccardi, expert on all things related to Louis Armstrong. I spent time in the Louis Armstrong Archives at Queens College, listening to Lil Hardin interviews and audio, as well as checking out original copies of her sheet music.
Starting tomorrow, (Tues) March 27th through (Sat) March 31st I'll be presenting my arrangements of her music at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Late Night Session @ 11:15pm. My band will feature: Tamir Shmerling - bass (3/27-3/29, 3/31), Jonathan Michel - bass (3/30), Cory Cox - drums, Tahira Clayton - vocals (3/27-3/28), Michael Mayo - vocals (3/29-3/31), Hailey Niswanger - alto saxophone (3/30-3/31) and myself on piano.
I would be thrilled if you can join us for any of these performances. I've very proud of this project and can't wait to share Lil Hardin's incredible music and spirit with all of you.
I will also be back in my hometown, Portland, OR at the beginning of April for a short visit. I'm playing with my group at The 1905 on Mon, April 2nd @ 7-10pm. Looking forward to that show! Featuring: Jonathan Lakey - bass, Cory Cox - drums, John Nastos - sax and myself - piano. During that trip to Portland, I will also be in the recording studio at Nvisiblesound tracking the music for a film score I co-wrote with Cory Cox for Boaz Frankel and Blakely Dadson's film, Alma 2020. More news on that project to come soon!
