Recent Changes in the Stacks
If you haven't visited us in a while, you might be surprised by all that has changed since our last newsletter.
Check it out yourself
All you need is your library account number and the item you're checking out. Step up to our self checkout station and experience the exhilarating thrill of scanning a barcode. An email is sent to you to confirm the due date, and don't forget the card to put in the back pocket!
Course reserves out in the open
Need quick access to a book for class? Find it in our relocated course reserves section. Conveniently located across from the self checkout station, course reserve items are marked with red labels indicating the course number. The circulation policy hasn't changed, so when you check one out, make sure you bring it back within three hours!
Shelving spots
We really appreciate it when you leave items lying about when you're done with them. Really, we do! To make it even easier for you to leave them out when you're done, we're adding these shelving spots throughout the library. Every book or item you pull off the shelf will be happy to be placed here. We scan all items before they go back on the shelf, which helps us to know what items you are finding most helpful. Please do us a favor and leave items out when you're done with them. Leave the shelving to us.
Invisible books?
One of the most asked questions these days is, "What are you doing with all the books?!" Rest assured, we remain committed to developing a fine collection of print materials. What is actually happening is the deaccessioning phase of a major collection development project that is part of Lancaster Seminary's strategic plan. In consultation with the regular faculty, Seminary Librarian Myka Kennedy Stephens identified volumes that were outside the scope of our collection, duplicated, outdated, or had not circulated since the late 1990s. These volumes are all tagged as "withdrawn" in the catalog and are now being pulled from the shelves and deaccessioned.
At the same time, Circulation Manager Hannah Bingman-Forshey is overseeing a major shelf-shifting project. We are hoping to bring the BT (theology) section to the main floor before the start of classes in August 2018. Plans are in the making to reorganize the lower-level stacks in Summer 2019 to create a more open and inviting atmosphere for quiet study.
Books that we are deaccessioning go to several places. Some are placed on our book sale shelf across from the circulation desk. Some are listed in our eBay store. Proceeds from these sales go directly toward collection development and preservation. Books that we cannot sell ourselves go to Adamstown Books for consignment, Better World Books, Theological Book Network, or to other local organizations that hold large book sales.

Final Phase Complete! Remote Access to eResources
Just over a year ago, Lancaster Seminary became the first institution in Pennsylvania to implement OpenAthens with EBSCO. Being the first to do something has its risks and rewards, and we thank all of our users for accompanying us on this journey of learning and discovery.
We are happy to report that the final phase of implementation and integration of OpenAthens with our library system is now complete. Any time you attempt to access an electronic resource, you will be prompted to log into your library account. This is the same access method for all users, regardless of the type of account you have. We strongly recommend logging in to your library account first, before attempting to access an electronic resource. This will streamline your experience.
Look for new video tutorials demonstrating the process in the coming months. If you encounter any difficulties with logging in or accessing eResources, please contact us at library@lancasterseminary.edu for assistance.
